>inb4 you're completely retarded
This one isn't at my house, so I can't just walk over there and mess with it, but I need to replace the battery. This thing is from the 2000s, so I'm wondering if the whole thing should be replaced. Do I just twist it, there's going to be a battery in there, and I just replace it? I do know that some of these are powered by the mains / grid power, but this one chirps every minute, and it's been doing this for years.

What type of battery is this likely going to use?
>>
Seriously, I will buy every single type of battery this thing could possibly have online and then see if any of them match.

>How to Change Smoke Detector Battery
You'd be better off learning how to swim in the deepest lake closest to you by yourself.
>>
>>2950282
I'm not a nigger. It's my grandma's house. She's the nigger. She's bot retarded and an actual pathological narcissist. My dad also owns that property, so we did some repairs to it today. That fucking chirping was driving me nuts, and I can't get it out of my head. She's literally never changed the battery, and it's been chirping since I was possibly 10, and I'm 25 now. I'm not bullshitting. I fucking hate my grandma.
>>
>>2950283
>I'm not a nigger. It's my grandma's house. She's the nigger
Now, I'm pretty sure that's not how genetics work.

>I fucking hate my grandma.
I'd hate my grandma too if she didn't give me breakfast in bed every morning with chicken and waffles along with shrimp'n grits on the side and a nice big grape drank to go with it.
>>
>>2950285
>I'd hate my grandma too
She was very abusive. I'm not going to give a sob story / trauma dump here. I had to grow up with her and my adoptive father. Short story, she didn't do anything for either of us and was just a financial parasite and would needlessly verbally and emotionally abuse us.
>>
>>2950278
After a bit of research, you're really supposed to replace a smoke alarm every 10 years. Once it gets orange like that, it's too old.
>>
>>2950288
Yes, just like how all nigger families are. You're a year younger than me. We're both grown ass men. You should already know how to cut someone off if they're being a piece of shit to you. I'm not sure why you'd even try to swap the batteries in a smoke detector for someone who abused you in your childhood. Stockholm syndrome much? Anyways, you're a nigger who still lives with his fucked up ass grandma, and the fact that you can't read the fucking embossing on the cover of the smoke detector proves my point that you are indeed a nigger. Put 1 and 1 together: The body of the module clearly tells you which direction you can twist to put on or take off the cover. The test button, hush button and the battery compartment are both labelled too. The answer is literally right in front of your fucking face and you're too retarded to see it.
>>
>>2950301
>You should already know how to cut someone off if they're being a piece of shit to you.
Depending on your family, you can't just do this. I was at my grandma's house today because my dad who adopted me partly owns it and some renovation needed to be done at the front. I helped him with some of this work. I asked him why he does it, and the answer was simply because he partly owns the house.
>Anyways, you're a nigger who still lives with his fucked up ass grandma
I live with my dad in a townhouse. I feel pretty shitty and my anxiety has been up pretty much the whole day after going to my grandma's house. Hearing the chirp of that smoke alarm and visiting my room brought me some nasty memories.

I talked to my dad about it, and it's apparently wired up to mains / grid electricity, but it's still beeping. From my research, you're supposed to replace the smoke detector itself every 10 years, and I'm likely going to do this with my dad pretty soon.
>>

this
thank you, anon
>>
>>2950345
Anyway yeah just replace the whole thing if it's super old, I'm probably gonna have to replace the fire alarms at my place too since I'm also poised to inherit it and my pap installed some sort of weird alarms roughly a decade ago that I only really know work because grandma accidentally microwaved a pancake for 40 minutes that one time instead of 4 minutes.
Anyway I think it's because the smoke-detecting part of the alarm (like the sensor) goes bad after a while and that's why they gotta get replaced, something like that.
>>
>This thing is from the 2000s, so I'm wondering if the whole thing should be replaced.
yes, replace the whole thing

>>2950343
>>2950345
smoke detectors don't prevent fires. if the smoke detector goes off, the house is burning down. grandma's not putting out the fire. she probably won't even call the fire department.

It is wired to the mains with a battery backup so it will work it the power goes out. 99% of them that I have been around use a 9v battery. Take one with you and swap it in to stop the chirping until you can replace the entire thing.
>>
>>2950411
This, mine uses 2 AA batteries. You twist the main body then there is 3 prong small plug. The batteries are replaced by just sliding the battery door. Vacuuming or using air on it isn't a bad idea either to clean it.

They have expiration dates on them. The sensors that detect smoke don't work as well with time.
>>
>>2950531
Big Alarm redesigned them so they don’t last more than 10 years. They even have internal counters so they start chirping at EOL even if they are still good. It’s a fucking racket.
>>
>>2950278
Ignore the racist white psyop, it's the hallway itself which is chirping and that's normal.
>>
>>2950283
So the half nigger is aware of the smoke detector, yet unable to do anything about it ... interesting.
To full nigger obviously smoke detectors are like gods, inventions of the white man far beyond their imagination.

The best part of this whole board is reading retarded posts from retarded sub-humans. Give it a couple more generations and they'll be asking how to change a light bulb.

I mean, instead of opening the fucking thing and putting in new batteries, he decided to make a new thread here and wait for answers and even reply to to defend himself of not being a nigger. On an anonymous board.
I dunno man. If I have kids I don't want them to grow up this helpless

My gma used to hit me with cattleprods to wake me up. I learned to jump out of bed when i heard the squeaky door so then she greased it. I love my gma. Shes a bitch but very funny.
>>
This whole thread and none of you know it's 9v it's always and only fucking 9v even in the mains powered ones it's 9v for backup, and yeah they chip when the 9v is low.
>>
Idk if I even want kids anymore. This going to be their teachers and peers? Holy fuck I’m glad I live in Alaska. At least I just have to worry about rape and alcoholism with them and them not being this fucking retarded
>>
>>2950278
not reading the thread to see if anyone has said it due to all the probable racism, but those things usually have a 10 year life, so just replace it instead of fucking with it if you actually care about the homeowner
>>
>>2950278
this one has both an optical detector and a radiation based detector. the Americium in it has more or less dissipated beyond usefulness after 10 years or so, and the optical detector is probably hazy and dusty if you haven't regularly vacuumed and blew it. Change it all to a new higher end dual detector model across the entire place.

Replace the entire smoke detector. These things have a legit expiry date on them. That one is so fucking old looking that it probably doesn't work anymore. But most, if not all smoke detectors are 9volt batteries. There is a door that is horizontal on your picture (the plastic rectangle), press it inwards, it will pop open. Swap out the 9volt with a new 9 volt. Make sure the 9volts are Alkaline and not cheap ass dollar store ones that are chemical. Dollar stores DO have Alkaline 9 volts however for like $2. They will work perfectly fine. I use them and they last a long time. Also, replacing a smoke detector is not hard. Just have to unscrew the detector from the mounting ring and swap out the old ring (or keep the ugly plastic one if it fits the new detector) and replace it.
>>
>>2950323
Good stuff. You figured it out. Hard wired smoke detector that needs complete replacement.

Shut off the power to the kitchen or wherever it's located from the fusebox. Or kill the whole house, it doesn't matter but you'll have to reset her clocks or she'll be late to all future appointments. Payback for treating you like shit all your life...

Ain't that some shit lol

Hey, while I'm here, I'm not OP, but I'm tending to grandma's house while she's in the nursing home, can I ask, do any of y'all know what these fucking things are? My pap replaced all the smoke detectors in the house with these, he passed away in 2019, so they're at least five years old, and none of them have been chirping or anything, so I assume they work?
Grandma accidentally cooked a pancake for 40 minutes instead of 4 minutes once and set off the one near the kitchen, so I guess they work, but I wish they had some sort of test button or something that told me they were still alive and working, y'know?
The whole thing is barely larger than a 9V battery, so idk what the hell it's being powered by, it sure isn't house power.
>>
>>2955487
There seems to be a horizontal line break in the plastic roof mount. So I'm going to make an assumption that it is a twisty mount (most normal battery operated smoke detectors are twisty mounted to a mounting ring so you can get the detector off easily to change the battery). If I were you, I'd get a stool or ladder (chairs can break when standing on them unless a high quality one) and try and twist that thing off. Don't super force it but it shouldn't be like death grip tight either. I think it will come off from the roof mount and then you can read the underside and see what part numbers/manufacturer name, dates, etc are visible. Then Google that shit and find out from them manufacturer what your options are. They may even have some kind of instructional sheet/PDF to read. When the thing is stuck to the roof you can't do much so bring it down to your human level and you will have a much better time trying to figure out if it's battery operated, hard-wired or perpetual energy powered by pixie & unicorn poop.

One thing you can do is light a candle and then blow it out and put the smoking candle underneath each device and check if it goes off. If it's a detector it will be loud so maybe wear ear plugs since you're standing right underneath it. It doesn't appear to be a sprinkler system so you most likely won't flood your house.

You could also try an AI reverse image search on Google or Yandex image search to see what pops up to give you something to go off of with your picture. I will admit it is an unusual design that I've never seen before.

PS, I did some reverse image searching and you're not the only one wondering what the hell it is since it's so small. Here are two pics I found so far to give everyone an idea about the size. One of the pics has a TEST button written on the side of it. So check if yours has a TEST button and click that shit.

I still think they twist off though so have a go. They're powered by some kind of battery but it doesn't appear to be a 9-volt since it's so damn tiny.

While not exactly the same model or possibly even brand, it will give you something to go off of.

FireAngel is the name on the package so even if it's not your manufacturer, you could search FireAngel and go to their website and it's product information should be ballpark similar to yours.

Apparently these things were also sold at Costco at one point in time so they could be pretty popular. They seem to have a 5 year battery life of some kind...so that would hopefully explain the longevity, unless they're dead and worn out...LOL.

Interesting! I wish I had thought to ask him about why he chose these units while he was still around, but you don't think of those kinds of things until it's far too late.
And now I know for certain they'll start beeping when they run out of juice, though I'm probably just going to replace all of them with normal smoke detectors again.
Oh, hey, it's replaceable!
