does anyone have any experienced building wallmounted retractable desks like pic related? i'm moving to a smaller place and need to think in more compact terms but still have a space to set up a laptop with a set of small speakers, an audio interface and smaller pieces of gear. I found a few online but the structure itself seems relatively simple, so I'm thinking of building one myself.

>>2952549Have you ever seen one of these in use, where a person actually lives? Probably not, because they suck. Just get a normal desk suited to your needs. If you ever need it out of the way it will take as much time to clear the desk surface as the wall mounted piece of shit, and a full minute to remove the legs and stow it all in a closet or under the bed.
>>2952549Seems like a strictly-worse version a secretary. That said, if you are constrained on space and need a temporary work surface I could see it being useful.
>>2952549I'd go for one of these if you don't have the space for a dedicated desk. Get some comfortable over-ear open back headphones like the beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro and you won't need speakers.
>>2952549It's a cute idea, but I think that in the real world the desk gets deployed and then never put away. It will get stuff on it, and then always have stuff on it.
>>2952931I think they are just for temporary work, not long term use.
>>2952549When I rented a room in a townhouse, the only space for me to put up my PC was in a hallway beside the living area. I mounted a monitor to the wall, and below it mounted an 8" deep keyboard shelf on hinged brackets so it would drop down parallel to the wall, out of the way so the hallway could be used easily. I velcro'd the keyboard to the shelf. The desktop PC sat on the floor, sideways.I thought I would use it to game or work, but it ended up just being used as a media center for the adjacent TV. it just wasn't comfortable to stand at the wall-PC.OP pic is not going to be comfortable as you can't really rest your arms on the desk.>>2952857This is a better solution. But if OP is poor they won't be able to afford the coffee table.
