This is besides sanitizing with bleach water etc. (I will be doing that later, although these driftwood are to mount things, not to be near animal life.)

It's damn hard to locate every rotten spot in a large driftwood like the example pic, then chisel it out and hose with a spray nozzle.

I'm looking at:

- Sandblasting with walnut or something relatively soft
- Pressure washing with a relatively low-PSI machine (1000-2500, idk).

What do you suggest? I might be selling stuff put on these driftwood, so I want to clean them up pretty good.

Have you tried just blasting with air?

I think I may have used a poor choice of photo and not really been specific in the size of matter I'm trying to remove.

It's less like dust or dirt or small particles, and more like the stuff in pic. Stuff that can be gotten off but is resilient.

this is what I would do, then hit it with compressed air to clean off anything leftover. DO NOT BLEACH THE WOOD IT WILL RUIN THE COLOR!! the best way to kill germs/mold/whatever is to let it completely dry, that's literally it.

That's rotted and dried wood. You're going to need a sharp implement like a chisel, wire wheel or dremel or something to get all of it off. Yes, you are going to damage the wood underneath. Think of it as basically making a sculpture, one heavily inspired by the initial log.

Oh, I'm not worried about ruining the shape too badly. I'm a sculptor, so i know that flaws are new opportunities.

I've taken chisels to that driftwood since the first post and it just sucks, though. I'll think I've found all the soft spots but there are always more, and most of the surface is in that ambiguous "could be rot, good idea to take it out" zone. That's why I want to lazy it and get someone with a sandblaster or pressure washer to get at it.

How long would it take to dry it completely? It doesn't have a consistent thickness but I guess the thickest part might be 8"?

light reflection should differ your phones lidar might be able to identifiy density differences making it easier, i think you nailed it with a soft airborne abrasive
