>replace pilot light assembly
>press knob on pilot and click button once or twice
>flame lights
>keep holding down knob until status light starts blinking
>let go of knob and flame immediately goes out
why??
>>

because the little bulb thingy that the pilot light heats up to indicate the pilot light is working is defective, or dirty. also the pilot light may be clogged with soot and it's not getting a hot enough flame.

do you even diy?
>>
>>2954107
Hold it longer until the orange flame clears up. You still have air in the line from having it opened up... I've had to do it several times and hold it longer until it finally stays properly lit.

I don't think you actually read my post
>>2954194
I've held it for eons and it makes no difference

Also just tried cleaning on/around the air filter and that didn't do anything

He read your post, you didn't read his. Typically a pilot light heats up a thermocouple which tells the system to keep the gas valve open so you don't have to hold down the button. Sometimes you gotta clean/lightly sand the thermocouple to make it work again.
>>
>>2954226
>I don't think you actually read my post
yes I did. had to relight pilot lights all the time because of the problem. most pilot lights go out because enough air gets blown over a pilot light to cool off the bulb. modern gas heaters are a pain to get to since they basically seal up the burner chamber.
>>
>>2954229
So you didn't read the very first line of my post. The entire pilot assembly including the thermopile is brand new
>>2954239
What are you even talking about? Are you trolling? can't find anything online about a pilot light bulb. Even the AI overview is saying that doesn't make any sense.
>>
Did you verify the wires on the flame sensor are not flipped?
>>
>>2954531
Yes.
>>
>>2954107
Not hot enough
Hold for 30 seconds
>>
>>2954338
>pilot assembly
you sure the pilot assembly includes the long metalic thermometer called a therocoupler? it is a common part to replace so they sell them seperatly at my local box store.
>>2954229
i could have sanded it, i replaced it and now the stupid gas preheater screen for the epa regs is causeing premature ignition, service rep immediatly asked what state i was in thought i heard em laugh.
>>
>>2954787
> ignition
i meant detonation.
>>
>>2954787
Pic related is the entire igniter assembly which I've replaced. There are no other replaceable parts. Except the control unit which I've now also replaced and that didn't help either. I'm going insane.
>>
>>2954107
Your thermocouple is bad or you didn't hold it long enough to build up a charge to hold the valve open.
>>
>>2955994
Why are there so many braindead posters on this board
>>
>>2954790
that's ok. Premature ignition is only a problem when you don't talk with your doctor, er plumber about it.
>>
>>2955955
Do you see the gas drop down tube on the left in this pic:
>>2954229

It tends to get clogged, which is why it has a tube in the first place to catch debris. Hit it with a hammer a few times to loosen the stuff inside. Bet you are losing gas pressure to this.
>>
I went through this same thing about 3 or 4 months ago and had a thread about it here. I happened to find an identical water heater in the trash so I swapped out the thermostat and thermocoupleand it fired up again.
>>
>>2954338
>Even the AI overview is saying that doesn't make any sense.
imagine being so fucking stupid you rely on AI overview. something that is wrong 60% of the time. I have worked on water heaters I know what I am saying. AI has NEVER worked on anything and is useless.

said the braindead poster.

had the ec\xact same issue about a year ago. called the manufacturer and someone on the phone walked me through troubleshooting.

ended up being the gas valve was bad. bought a new one for 90 bucks and it fired right up,
>>
>>2956382
If you google water heater problems 90% of the solutions you find are about the thermocouple. I started my post saying I replaced the whole pilot assembly, which would include the thermocouple. Then there were other posters in the thread saying it's the thermocouple and I responded explaining that it isn't. And then you chime in
>dude I bet no one has told him it's the thermocouple

anyway f this I'm replacing the whole unit with a heat pump water heater
>>
I'm a licensed plumber
The thermopile must read 650 dc mv when heated for minute. If there's a rollout switch, it must have continuity when the wires are disconnected...if those two are good, replace the gas valve..

https://www.homedepot.com/c/ah/how-to-replace-a-thermocouple

It literally can't be anything else.

You got some gas. Maybe your thermocouple isn't actually being heated by the pilot. Maybe your pilot has dlrestricted gas flow so it's not actually getting hot enough. That's pretty much it. You.have gad because you.can light it at all, and you have spark because your say you see the pilot.
>>
>>2954107
bad thermocouple, or, if it's a rheem from 2020-2021, the gas valve is defective. if it's a rheem, call your supplier and it will be replaced free.
