/diy/ I'm in such a shit position at the moment. I've got a house that I've let the front and back get absolutely overrun with Russian Thistle (tumbleweeds) Season is long over so not much I can do now.... But now I'm in a lovely predicament on how to get rid of this shit. I don't wanna keep spending money on it. I figure I can just pull a few a week crush them up and put them in a bin, since I don't really wanna just tackle a giant dumpster or something. But that still sucks. I don't care if my yard looks like shit for a while. >My mower can't get over them>Going through with a carbide blade isn't doing shit>Don't wanna start a fire near my house>Last quote I got to deal with the yard was like $1500 which is absurdAny suggestions on what to do here? I figure I can just spend the next six months pulling them but that does suck
Bruh, you should be able to pull all that in an afternoon, then just burn it in the center of your yard
>>2954965It goes on pretty far this was just a snippet but the problem with burning is more that I don't have a great spot for a fire pit and the neighbors will call the cops and bust my ass kek
>>2954970You don't have curb pickup?
>>2954964Get yourself a flail mower or something
What kind of mower do you have that won't get over them? Put a roller the front of it to knock them flatter if you have to. Then mow away. Hit it from the other direction without the roller on your second pass to really obliterate them.
>>2954964mmm, russian thistle, i assume shallow roots, pull and stack rope might help. you can soil tarp to prevent regrowth, tarping the fence should reduce blown in seeds, and a stone moat like what youd do for a french drain system should isolate the yard. i like to dig with a shop vac and an electric cultivator, twice as long but easier on the back & hands. Renting a trencher is probablly a better idea. 3/4 in angular gravel; might as well pipe electrical data water and drainage; gas if you are bold. bushes on the border to defend against blown in contaminates
Brush cutter blade attachment for a weedeater.
>>2955012Think taking it down by layers and just not flattening it is okay? I may mulch it with the lawn mower if I get it all done over the weekend but that's a decent one >>2955000I think the issue is mostly that they're so tall and thick that I can't push it through very well but maybe I didn't try hard enough >>2954992Eh the issue with this stuff being put in bins I've found is it doesn't compress very well at all.
>>2954964Leave it alone. I would love to have a yard full of thorny thistles.
We use a scythe with a brush or ditch blade on these. $250 on scythesupply.com for a full setup.Read the book that comes with it, start at sunrise to there's still some dew on the plants, take them down the the ground level, work for an hour a day, and backseed with white clover to prevent released seeds from germinating, this will also fix nitrogen over time so the ground is usable for stuff like gardens, and attract pollinators.
>>2955095I genuinely was thinking this is a better option because of how thick they've gotten honestly.
Hand pruners and some sweat. Oh and gloves because you'll get blisters.
>>2955093Are you trying to deter livestock?
>>2954964looks like you live in a bia shack on the res. but theres not enough dead iroc-zs with no wheels in the yards to confirm the hypothesis
>>2955147Small groups hang out in my front yard in the evenings to early AM, and I have been threatened. The area gets trampled down so nothing substantial can grow.
>>2955147Russian thistle is actually pretty good feed for livestock when it is young and tender.
>>2954964don't let them die and dry out before removing them. now you are screwed.
