Does anybody actually like using these? I fucking hate themIs there any alternative other than a really sharp razor blade and 4 extra hours of my life?
>yes mine broke>yes its my fault
What's there not to like? It does a lot of things, pretty fast.
>>2955658/diy/Does anybody ever do this?
skill issue
>>2955658Honestly if you alredy have a hand plane or chisel then a router is pretty much obsolete
>>2955679wow, just wow
>>2955670
>>2955658Why does it look so uncanny? It feels like it's thrown together of cheap and fine looking parts in an absurd arrangement.
desu i think i might start trying to move away from using power tools entirelyi am SICK of hearing loud machines day in, day outthere is always always ALWAYS some yokel running a lawnmower or a leafblower or a chainsaw or some shit and there's never any chance to just hear the sounds of the wind and the birdsi don't want to contribute to that shit any more than i have toalso i'm tired of wearing ear and eye protection for every single operationalso i'm tired of breathing in sawdust and glue and shit. hand tools are just a lot less messy.also the sun is gonna take out all the electricity globally soon and i want to be ready.power routers have been very useful for me in the past and there are times when i lament not owning one.
>>2955658Molding planes, router planes, or shapers.
>>2955658Why would you not like them? Just gotta be careful and not fuck up your whatever you're working on
>>2955658i was burning up a few bosch routers a year so i bought this one and it fucks. i love routers.
>>2956475This. If I need a clean accurate repeatable cut I will use my tablesaw, but I will always prefer hand tools. Fuck routers, fuck sanders, doublefuck multitools. Drills are okay.
>>2956648multitools are for demolition and remodeling. Why are you using them for woodworking?
>>2956720not that anon>installing door jambs before floors go in>butt the bottom face of the blade against a scrap piece of flooring>BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZperfect fit.
>>2955658I fucking despise them>>2956776They should ban plumbers from being allowed to buy multitools
>>2956584>burning up?I've only had a hand-me-down router burn. The brushes do go out regularly on most. Are you doing a lot of plunge cuts?
>>2955658>Is there any alternativeHow much do yo have to cut? I do small jobs with a chisel or a Stanly No 45. But more than a few feet of cutting and the power tools are handy.
>>2956819i sometimes make my own moldings on jobsites and it goes a lot faster if you do it in one pass :)
>>2955658I used this tool for the first time when building a pair of speakers and nearly killed myself from the kickback which made the fucking this fly when i cut too deep and too fast. somehow the bit didn't fly off.I like this tool.
>>2956475what about floor machines with induction motors
>>2956720I use them as freehand Domino
>>2956819not that anon but I use the milwaukee 3.5hp router to cut arunda dovetailsI put about 2-3 into the grave every year, even after hogging out most of the cut on the female side with a drill bit first
>>2955658there used to be a show that ran for a few years on PBS that was a guy who built some really nice furniture using pretty much only a router.Stop being so spastic, calm the fuck down and learn to use the tool with some forethought and patience and you will be just fine. A router is one of the most handy tools you can use for the jobs it is intended for and for some jobs where it is an alternative to spending a lot more money for the right tool.
>>2959496get the festool or the mafell https://www.timberwolftools.com/mafell-lo65ec-hand-routermafell is made for the arunda dovetail system, it's expensive and 240v but having the right tool for the job is really nice in my experience
>>2959778I absolutely would love too, just need to talk the boss into it. It's kind of a hard sell price-wise, and we don't have 240 set up right now so that's another expense. We do have a couple mafell tools and we all know how sick they are, but that's a very expensive router. Also I kind of like the full bar handles of the milwaukee vs the knobs on the mafell. If you hit a knot or the bit grabs it's fucking sketchy, I'd really rather have more control over it than less desu
First couple routers I got as a kid were kind of scary. I was always scared of power tools until I got used to using them but routers only went from scary to tedious. The setup, never quite went right, like I made a jig to cut a mortice in a couple passes, cut lines stood out because depth changed. Why? Don't know.Anyway, then I bought this little cheap shit 1/4 trim router on amazon. Some bullshit Chinese brand. Fucking love it. Any excuse to get it out. Door hinges, uh..... I think I cut a rebate for a desk with it....uh...that's it but I do have fun using it. One time I did try to take too big cut and the thing fucking snagged and flew out my hand lol, rocker switch so I baked the plug out the wall. Had to change my underwear but no harm no foul we forgave each other.Every year or so I think oh this could do with a router table, look at inserts, decide I can do a different way without spending hundreds on kerg or whatever shite. Accessories are ruthlessly expensive. Yeah routers are alright desu.
>>2955658>Does anybody actually like using these?fucking love emgranted im not a bonified woodbutcher but damn does a flush trim and roundover sure make it easy to make shit look pro. plastic and aluminum too
>>2955658for its use, yes.for cutting out doors and such in osb framing that was never their purpose.another purpose they where never made for was aluminium, i got a set of used chevy wheels for my ford van, correct 8 lug and all. but the rear wheels where too tight over the hub. used a handheld router to mill out the material needee to make lt fit.
>>2955679Power tools were obsolete the moment they were invented. Hand tools always do a better job. Except for speed. Power tools win on speed and is why every fucking body uses them.
>>2957278>do it in one passFound your problem. Get something big and beefy.
>>2963203Beefy you say?!
>>2963204what kinda wristlet pussyass shit is that? real men use a 15hp yates twin arbor shaper flipped upside down. twice the spindles for twice the tools and twice the babes all in half the time
>>2963205>t. never used a power tool in his life
>>2955658OP, a router is a tool. Like all tools, you have to learn how to use it. A very short run down:- never turn the thing on while in contact with wood.- multiple shallow passes - this includes doing multiple passes when doing profiles.- correct direction - you want to push against the rotation of the blade, not with the rotation. Make sure only one quadrant of the blade is touching your work piece.- guides, guides and guides - if you do need to cut with multiple quadrants touching wood (examples would be a plunge or a dado cut) then use guides on ALL sides of your movement. Search "dado jig for router" on YT for examples.
>>2963207nigger ive used and abused more power tools than your mom keeps in the top drawer
>>2956648KeK!>Some of you tools are okay, Don't show up on the jobsite tomorrow. Me and the nailguns are doing a thing.>>2957278I've done quite a bit of this myself. They must've really fucked Bosch routers over the years, because I have the exact plunge and fixed router combo in OP's post and even after it went through a storage space flood,(2 actually,) that little guy is still going strong after 23 years. I do prefer to hand cut hinge mortises thoughbeit
>>2955658Dude what? Make 16 linear feet of perfect roman edge by hand. Or try to level a slab with a razor blade rather than a router sled. Of course I like using routers and I'm not even terribly good with them.
>>2956475what trade you in? sounds like some kind of prop or movie/theatre. in real work a saw, drill or grinder isn always sound and then no one use protection.
>>2955658you know... before the internet tools were tools. now every whiny man child has to start a thread where they piss and moan about things that no one else does.you are a pathetic human.
>>2963208try cutting oak endgrain without blowout without doing a climb cut
>>2955658these things are awesome if you get a set of guide bushings and make templates for shit out of wood or with a 3d printer
>>2963389Big if true
pepperidge farm remembers when crapsman made decent shitnow you have to buy it off egay instead of the ole days of taking a fun excursion to youre local sears and roebuck retail establishment
Almost lost a finger to one of these things. Sure, it was due to carelessness, but I feel like any tool with this kind of power should be either bolted down, or a blade cover that automatically snaps in place when the tool is lifted from the workpiece.
>>2956475calm down ted.
>>2955658I don't know why those dogshit Bosch routers are so popular. The base is some chink metal that instantly gets fucked from the indexing pin and then the base is jammed on the motor housing. The height adjustment is janky as fuck too. This is one of my favorite tools.
I wish I could get one of these in my shop.
>>2965732im sure aliexpress has a cheap one waiting for you anon
>>2965736...anon i...
>>2965736is buying big heavy shit like that off aliexpress actually a good ideai have the suspicion that they will charge a $9000 import tax when it arrives in 6 months
>>2955658The french name of this tool is very offensive.
>>2955658>Cabinet MakerLove this little nigga like you wouldn't believe
I fucking hate them because I have no finess with them, my solution is to get a router table so I fuck up less making the simplest shit. Note: this may be retarded, I am retarded, but all the projects I want to do involve stupid channels and shit only a router can do in wood
For my work they are extremely useful, framer. Its not detail cabinet, trim type work, but when I frame wall and sheet it before standing and sometimes I sheet it after it's up. They make cutting out rough openings for windows, doors, etc. or cutting the excess off wall sheets/ roof sheets. It's a lot cleaning then the circle saw/recep saw combo. Or when the concrete guys fuck up the foundation and you now have to router each joists layout on the plate to match what's drawn they too are great there. Its a great tool but if you do work like this/that youd already know this.
>>2955658im not much of a cabinet maker or anything more a car guy, but even there has these things been handy>cup holder tray on old ford van, looked like trash so i copied it in oak>speaker panels>these things eat aluminium like its wood, bought some wheels that didnt fit, centre hole was too small. carefull milling with a router and they fit.
