>>2958406roomate found the work bench now a dumping ground for stuff to be organized into the garage, i work on the ground witch disappointingly is vinyl. I had 12x12 tile floor before was great.
>>2958669>>2958670>sander grinder and bandsaws on table>everything not absolutely covered in dustYou guys don't actually use your workstations do you? I cut some wood for a new table using a mitre saw and now I'm going to be spending the next decade vaccuuming and wiping down every single square inch of surface area in my basement.
Behold the two types of /diy/ersThe electronics hobbyist: >>2958668He's got a large workbench with a ton of tiny cabinets and drawers to neatly organize every single thing he'll need. In spite of that, it still looks pretty messy. And the home improvement-vis-a-vis construction enthusiast: >>2958670He's got an entire room, probably a garage, full of all sorts of potentially dangerous equipment, like saws, drills, and grinders. In spite of that, his workspace looks very neatly organized, with no corner actually looking too crowded or so crammed that it'll become impossible to find something.I wish I could be like the latter, but really I'm more like the former.

>>2958668Looks very professional. I'm more of a software guy and pretty much a beginner when it comes to hardware, what kinds of projects do you build with that kind of equipment? I guess you expanded it over several years?
>>2958763NTA, but it looks like a tech's repair workbench based on the random items pictured.
This thread made me realize I have a problem because I'm too embarrassed to post my workspaces.I have ten separate project/storage rooms on two properties that I need to clean up of all my tools and shit. Guess I'm just lazy, I only like using my rare and precious free time for fun things, not cleaning up all this bullshit. But I need to get started, it's beginning to drive me crazy.

>>2958685did it maybe occur to you that I cleaned it before taking a picture? Also I clean it after a project is done so future me isn't pissed because he has to clean it before starting the next project.
>>2958697>it still looks pretty messy.should of seen it before I cleaned it. or right now.

im making a custom keyboard but have no clue how to solder. give me tips. is it true it's better to heat up both the metal square/ring in the pcb and the thing that sticks out of components before adding the solder wire?

I've been building a workstation/home lab this weekend and posting in /ohm/ because that's what I'm going to use it for but they said I should post the build here instead so here's the progress to date. apartment workbench still a mess, been wanting to find a solution too reduce sound on powered tools so Im not having to worry about bothering neighbors.
>>2964804>been wanting to find a solution too reduce sound on powered tools so Im not having to worry about bothering neighbors.lol fuck em. They should've rented a house if they can't deal with occasional noise.
>>2964804diy a collapsible sound booth using rock wool, 1x4s, fabric and some hinges
>>2958406Mine is messy. I want to get some shelves to tidy this up. Currently on the bench is my beloved steelseries 7G. I pulled it fron storage to use it to play Ark Raiders. I have my PC in the living room and play the game on 65" oled TV because I'm autistic. Because of this I tripped over the cable to my 7G keyboard and broke the PS/2 connector. A replacement cable does not exist as isbthe case for several Logitech products. I've ordered a male mini din 6P connector from digikey to repair it. I've considered sacrificing an old computer junk ball mouse to harvest uts PS/2 connector but id rather keep that mouse intact as useless as it is.
>>2964651Get yourself a lable maker anon. Plastic storage containers are fine but be sure to get ones with opening drawers. Don't use non-transparent plastic bins with a single lid on top. These turn inti a catch all where you have ti completely empty them and make a mess to find the item or tool you're looking for. Drawer systems paired with a lable maker make for much more effective sorting systems.
>>2964900>>2964651I did this and 0 regrets. I got the organizers from Michaels buy one get one free (which is the only way to buy them, amazon says they've sold 400+ in the last 30 days at $23 each and I got them for ~$9 each.) They have 16 little containers inside and the outer cases stack. I'm using them for long term storage; things like shitty chinese paper only manuals, warranty cards, accessories, etc. For larger things that don't fit the plan is to buy some storage tubs from home depot and sort everything using freezer bags
>>2964906Nice. Yes the lable maker helped me immensely. The only problem I have is that I accidently bought clear lables that are hard to see. The white backing lables are the way to go. Oh nice. I have one of those chimesium 850D hot air stations too.. I havent used mine much aside from some practice.. speaking of soldering. Most of the soldering I do is with a conventional soldering iron. I wish to add a more substantial fume extractor to my bench.. these vevor units look inexpensive to operate..
>>2964909if you have a 3d printer why not try making one? hepa filter layer for particulates and charcoal filter (or a respirator filter) for the fumes
They say that boat stands for break out another thousand and I feel having a workshop is the same thing except it's always $50-60. No matter how small the project is it seems to end up costing $65 after taxes.tired of needing to wait for filament to dry>filament storage containers, hygrometers and desiccate beads? $60not enough outlets for permanent installations, constantly plugging and unplugging the same things>power strip, power bar, extension cable and cord covers? $70want to free up some desk space and use the wall behind the workstation>boards+hardware for shelves and a hardware organizer? $65I'm doing a pretty good job repurposing things and using cheap solutions from other hobbies/household goods to keep costs down plus I have a 3D printer and laser cutter so everything fits together just the way I want but I don't seem to be able to escape the $65 per project price tag.Next up I want to do a wall organizer and I can already see the $$$ creeping up with the cost of mounting hardware, filament, etc.
>>2964909>>2964995I've looked into solder fume extractors for a while and imo DIY is not the way to go. There are shitty options on AliExpress/Amazon for $50 but the reviews say they're worthless. You need both a HEPA filter and a charcoal layer to filter particulates and organic vapors. The shitty solder fume extractors use 3-in-1 air purifier filters that are fine for filtering particulates but are shit for the OVs, which is what you care about. You either need thick charcoal filters that air slowly filters through to give it enough time to absorb the vapors or your need specialized high pressure charcoal filters. You're not finding either in the cheap, shitty fume extractors that barely even more air.You linked the 150W and that seems like it would be overkill for a hobbyist assuming you have the space to get the extractor within ~6-10 inches of where you're working. I'd go with the 100W version if you can get the extractor reasonably close. Also for anyone who doesn't have anyone: in 1-2 solder joints the VOCs spike into the unhealthy range and after 3-4 it's hazardous levels
>>2965043 #Yea currently I'm looking into a more robust solution. My current fume extractor if one of those sit on table box shaped things. It hardly does anything. After I've been soldering for a little while my whole room stinks like soldering fumes. I want to have somethimg that really pulls all the soldering fumes out and filters them thoroughly. Perhaps the 150w unit is overkill for my hobbying needs but I figure why not go for more filtration power seeing as there's hardly a cost difference between the 100w and 150w fume extractor. They also have the same footprint. Id probably have extractor box tucked in next to my table. Maybe I would even take a hole saw and run the extractor tube up through the wall side of the tabel top itself so it could be housed underneath the table. Id have to take some measurents to figure it out. The vevor brand is certaibly on the economical end of the spectrum. Their products are very cheaply made out of thin materials. I've seen their water pumps and blower fans used in professional settings. supply managers are likely attracted to the price. How long will this stuff really last remains unknown. Though, $200 for a 150w fume extractor with triple hepa filtration seems like a good gamble.
>>2965027>They say that boat stands for break out another thousand and I feel having a workshop is the same thing except it's always $50-60. No matter how small the project is it seems to end up costing $65 after taxes.Lol. I wish my shit was only $60 per project...
>>2964805I am just being considerate desu but I also sometimes do it when they aren't home anyways.>>2964814I thought about this. I also kept making it "better" this "workbench" is a shelf essentially. I have two shelves layered for the bench top and there's a another two shelf layered above with random stuff I use. the concept is a pull out metal frame to throw blankets or whatever material to make a small sound dampening.with the shelf above have two of the shelf planks I maybe put a folded blanket between the two to help dampen, maybe on the back side but its not a huge priority.HOLY FUCK WHATS IS THIS CAPTCHA BULLSHIT
>>2961716why do you have such a large floor drill press if you're just doing electronics

>>2964814what the hell is rock wool and can i use this method to make a sensory deprivation booth ie prevent sound from both getting in and out
>>2965565
>>2965570Rock wool is essentially fiberglass batting, except made with slag.Several years ago someone figured out you could make rock wool from the slag piles outside refineries and that's how an enormous hill of slag in my province got cleaned up.Anyway it's dense and decent for soundproofing mostly because it muffles sound, but you need more than just rockwool to make a soundproof booth.
It arrived in 2.5 days (ignore the dangling power cords, shelf goes up tomorrow so I can start running power
