Its only inteded for certain wastes. The liquid wastes that flows into the soil is supposed to be a sufficient distance above groundwater so the natural microbes in the soil act on the wastewater to help neutralize it so it does not contaminate the groundwater, which many people also use for drinking (groundwater well). The 'solids' in the tank are supposed to be degraded over time and they break down are flushed out into the drain field where they continue degredation. Its important to have the proper microbes working. If yo dispose of chemicals that kill the microbes you stop the treatment process, and solids or other chemicals that are not inteded to be disposed of that way can clog the system. There should have been a leach test to properly determine the size of the drain field to spread out the wastewater to ensure it slow migrates downward and does not just dump into the groundwater so the microbes have time to act on it.

I've lived in two places with septic, both functioning fine, and on both you could clearly tell where the leech field was from the grass because it grew so nicely. However, I don't water the rest of my yard so when it's dry the leech field has the only green grass, and in the rainy season the only real difference is the type of grass that dominates the two areas. A lot of the septic water is also lost to evaporation, so not all of it goes down. That's part of the reason you can't put something over the leech field, in addition to soil compaction.

If it is screened deep enough and far enough away and the transmissivity high enough it will not be an issue. The potential issue is the well is screened across the aquifer and is too close and you dump too much waste and pull too much water you can pull the contaminated water into your well. When you pump the well you change gradient aroud the well and the more you pump the more you change the gradient. So more people than usual = more water pumping and more pissing, showers, dishwasing and washing macine use = more waste water. I worked at a place and this kind lady called saying her family was on a well for a long time, but for some reason it dried up....only about a week after the county connected their home to the public sewer system. Hmmmmmmm

Sewer lines are not pressurized and gravity drained so if ther is a leak it wont leak or at least not leak much. Their speptic system and fresh water well was actually hydraulically connected. The pumped groundwater (shower, cooking, drinking, washing) was discharged to the sewer system and back to the groundwater and pulled back into the well. This is not what you want. If it does happen you want the residence time to be long enough such that the natural microbes in the vadose zone and groundwater digest sufficiently any harmful microbes in the water before its pulled back into the drinking water system. The likely got used to all the bacteria like poor people in locations with bad sanitary practices. Since their well drired up soon after their sewer water was taken away by the county sewer system their groundwater supply was insuffient to supply the house. Its amazing how many people have wells and never monitor them for water quality or to run an occasional pump test to confirm proper operation.

I would ask for all the records of well drilling, construction, operation, and water quality testing (if they have good records it shows they have a brain and were paying attention and probably doing regular testing and maintenance). Its relatively inexpensive to collect water samples for a suite of analysis to be sure its safe for drinking and irrigation.

How about a service to Ass-Blast clogged sepic field, since I hear they mostly clog with grease.Take a Shit-Tanker, add a reverse high volume pump, fill it with a solution of some fairly harmless solvent, heat it all up to near boiling, and hook up to Field inlet and blast field pipes with high speed, hi-volume boiling hot solution.Seems like it might be worth a try for a $1000 or WTF for the Service Call would be, compared to a whole new field, might add another 10yrs, or more, because now you learned not to dump grease.

Every so often I'll fill up both sinks with hot soapy water and send big vegetables down the GD. IMO the roughage and hot water helps scrape off any grease build up and send it out to main sewer. IMO its like an Italian Tune Up.I hear Chinese restaurants will use coffee grounds from other biz to dump down drains to help remove grease build up.We did have a leak in the "in the slab" drain from kitchen in floor a few years ago, and they had to dig up floor, etc, but I hear that is basically normal in this about 2006 vintage tract housing. Didn't hear anything about "please be more careful about what goes down drain".
