Is a locksmith business viable? It seems potentially lucrative in terms of oddball trades.

There is one in my local town, so probably. I doubt it's buying you any yachts, though. Seems like it would be better as a side business.

I feel like it's one of those jobs that's part of a wider repertoire. Like we have a guy that comes around to do maintenance on a few machines at work that also does ATMs and safes

pretty sure it's one of the most underpaid trades if you just do lockouts during the day time. if night time you can potentially make pretty decent money. people get desperate when it's after 5.

probably better money if you get well known and are regularly putting in locks/doors/door hardware etc for commercial/corporate buildings. idk.

i would imagine the more well rounded you are, the more opportunity you have for people to keep using you. people don't want to get a door guy when you only do locks. or a guy that only does non transponder cars, etc.

might be a good biz to work into, especially if you don't have to worry about rent for the time being

Pretty sure the same companies pulling SEO mafia shit with other trades also do it to locksmiths. Unless there was a crackdown on it, they basically bury smaller businesses and independents in the search results (same way every other thing you search for gets pages of irrelevant bullshit). If you want any referrals from people searching "locksmith" online you end up giving them a cut to be the middleman since the bulk of web traffic points to their site and phone number. It's not necessary but it's something to be aware of. Ideally you'd get in good with contractors in your area and maybe you're become the guy they call for any new projects.

As mentioned lockouts, rekeying and key cutting alone won't bring in a lot of bread. Locksmiths around here also install the doors (residential and storefront), install closers, crash bars, etc. Card Access is a pretty big deal too. Office spaces, medical facilities and so forth want badges, automatic door openers, mag locks and electric strikes, rex buttons/sensors, etc. A few locksmiths around here also do CCTV (there's a lot of overlap with what low voltage/alarm companies provide).

Last thought is whether or not you can even call yourself a "locksmith" yet. It's a protected title in many states which means you've gotta pay to piper first and meet whatever requirements the states asks if you, like a minimum level of insurance coverage and background checks, to be allowed to call yourself one. While you're getting started there's probably nothing stopping you from sticking some lettering on your truck that says "Lockouts, Rekeys, CCTV" or whatever. But if you stick "Locksmith" on the side, and the state doesn't recognize you as such, you could find yourself in some trouble.

tldr: long winded version of what's already been said / learn some low voltage too

I got a locksmith here in thailand and he just broke my door knob. I bet most of them suck if you can pick s lock youre probably better than 90% of locksmiths
