Is it easy to replace shingles on your own without any experience or knowledge? Can I watch a youtube video then go do it myself?
>>
>>2976281
In principle, yes. Much of the technicality is getting up there to do the work.
>>
Shingles are easy. The hardest part of shingling is doing it fast and not falling off the roof.

How steep your roof is (or at least whatever area you plan on reshingling) is important. Any more than like 6/12 and you really ought to get someone that knows what they're doing to go up there for you so you don't kill yourself. It never seems that bad until you actually get up there and have to fuck around for hours.
>>
Do you own the property?

Are you going to be there long term?

Might want to look into a tin roof.
>>

does getting a new roof really just involve nailing new shingles on top of the old ones? I honestly thought they replaced the sheathing and vents and stuff but apparently that costs more
>>
>>2976325
Depends. If the old shingles are in decent enough condition you can go over. If they are curling or missing chunks you have to remove it. These days it's just easier to go with a metal roof.

i have a historic house. i kind of want to replace some of the sheathing and add new vents and shit but I don't want spend 20k on it. Just nailing more on there doesn't seem like a good result
>>
>>2976329
>sheathing
Well, you have to remove the shingles to replace the sheathing. Vents you could do without removing too much. What makes you think you need to replace the sheathing?

i had small brown icicles coming out of my soffit vents. Crazy ice dams when it was below 0 for a week.

Hardest part of becoming a roofer is waiting for your prison term to end
>>
>>2976331
If it's just toward the edges, you can probably do that without taking off more than 3 or 4 courses.

What you're after sounds more like a job for pros, though.
>>
>>2976331
Happened to me too with a brand new roof, even with the water shield shit thats part of the code now. Ice dams are complicated and would be better mitigated by attic insulation. I just bought a roof rake and will try that (probably next season, since it's too late now, the dams is already there).
But yeah new shingles won't solve your problem.

Also half my neighbors have a leak of some sort right now. Conditions were really fucky this year. Probably once a year won't matter too much as long as it's only in the soffit.

I know this is DIY but I’m at my wits end and could use some input. Im not just typing this post to bitch I actually want answers
>live in 14 unit apartment building, 2 floors
>on second floor
>for over 2 weeks now theres been some kind of roofing team doing shit above me
They got the tar machine, theres sawing and drilling and hammering going on, nail gun. Idk wtf they’re doing. I didn’t think tarring a roof required sawing and drilling. Nail gun and hammering okay that makes sense but there aren’t shingles up there it’s a flat roof, I’ve never been up there only seen the roof in passing because roof access happens to be next to my front door.
I’m livid at this point. I’m sick with some gay cold, I only get my weekend to relax. I’ve tried to not be a bitch about this and think of it as “yeah these guys are doing back breaking work, I’m glad I don’t have to do that right now” (not a stranger to labor btw, not some soi fag with some cushy do nothing desk job have done various projects around my dads house my whole life have had some random physical jobs have one right now). It seems like they’re fucking off more than they’re working. It’s like they’re just milking hours. They stand around yelling and laughing while 1-2 guys work it’s not the chill Spanish it’s the loud fast “¡TIENESSEGUROQUANDOESTASTORTILLADEOCHOCINCOLAMIGRAMEGUSTANGRANDECULO!” Type. But idk anything about roofing.
TL;DR
What I’m trying to find out about is how fucking long should this take? I’m at the point I think these guys (all migrant spics who no espeaky ingles) are just milking hours. They’re out 7 days a week. Surely it shouldn’t take going on 3 weeks now to complete what is presumably just redoing a small apartment flat roof that’s maybe 6000 sf? Team of 7 dudes. It’s been no days off, usually 8 hours a day a few days where they work until 7pm. So what gives? Should they be done, or whats the time estimate on a flat roof this size?

It depends mainly on
>what they have to rip up and how many layers
Some old systems take more time to remove than to install the new system. I'm talking spending 2/3rds of the day ripping the most carcinogenic, stickiest, and itchiest shit you could imagine; followed by maybe 2-3 hours of gluing new insulation and laying new runs.
>how much they can reasonably rip in a day
They could probably rip the whole roof in a few days, but they can't leave anything open. So whatever gets ripped has to get replaced by the end of the day.
>whether they have to replace any decking or framing
With any type of roofing, you never truly know what issues you are going to come across until you finally rip it open. This is especially true when the roof is getting replaced due to leaks.
>any units(heating/cooling) or skylights they have to work around
They oftentimes will have to get into tight spaces beneath large ac units, or even lift them up to install blocks underneath. Think having 7 guys lift an object that requires a crane just to get it in place.
>what kind of system they are installing
Luckily, most modern systems are quite simple to install if you follow the manufacturer's directions. Though some still have more or less steps involved to ensure a proper install.
>how many beers the fuckers have at lunch
Self explanatory I'd say

Flat roofing is the most technical form of roofing and also the easiest to fuck it up. If you make a mistake on a shingle or steel roof it's usually as simple as going back to fix it. If you make a mistake on a flat roof, odds are pretty good you're gonna get sued.
3 weeks without a break does seem pretty steep though. I've known the Mexicans to work quick, but I've also been known to follow them around and fix everything they fuck up haha
>>
>>2976432
Depends on how many plies they are laying. We don't do hot mop most of the time for obvious reasons (open fucking flames on combustible sheathed structures = bad), but we do it sometimes. It probably 5-ply, and they are probably doing 20-30 SQ a day maybe less if only 7 guys. 15 guys can do around 50 SQ a day of EPDM or TPO with tear-off and all details done.
>t. commercial roofing contractor >>2977363
We use HVAC jacks. Anything 25 ton or less you can use those to lift them. And you are correct, you can do a billion test cuts, but you don't ever know the condition of anything until you start tearing it off. Flat roof mistakes is the entire reason we do NDL jobs only. Carlisle comes out and checks it to make sure everything is done right for our piece of mind and the customers. As the roofer you're the last person to touch the roof, so everything is automatically your problem until proven otherwise
>My HVAC sub just fixed a unit.
>While he was doing it, he poked 14 holes all over the roof
>"WE HAVE A LEAK, IT HAS TO BE TOUR FAULT"
That will be 750 for an non-warranty related emergency service call, please.
