Hi I've got a lot of patio to fix up. Its a bad job by previous owners. I haven't taken any up yet but it will likely just be laid on compacted sand. Its had some mortar slopped into the sides and then wood was used to create an edge. As you can see the wood has rotted / warped, slabs have moved out, mortar is all cracked and useless.I am a landscaping noob and wondering the best way to approach this. Should I take it all up, relevel / recompact the sand underneath, relay all the slabs , brush more sand in and edge with concrete edging stones? Or pull it up, level and lay a base on concrete to set them in? I would like to do a half decent job that lastsAny ideas most welcome thx
Yeh that just looks home made, compared to the ones in the top of the picture. The edge there could be done for several reasons, but its hard to tell from that picture alone. If its above the ground on the sides, it needs something to hold it back, otherewise the edge is gonna slant down over time. I would take it up and lay it back, in similar style to the others. Or if thats too hard, just do interlaced pattern. You wont need concrete on this, since its too small to drive on. But paths where a car gonna drive need concrete poured at the sides, just below the surface to hold the bricks in place. Otherwise they are gonna get gaps between them.

Hello, friend!I'm doing this right now too!
After leveling this, I decided the shitty unlevel added pad needs to go too
No stone under it. Just sand
Fucker is gone!
I need to get a dumpster.
