I want to buy a 3D pen for general repairing purposes but I don't know any specifics or details about the different types of pens/ plastics they use to be most efficientanyone got any experience they don't mind sharing?plastic weight load strength would be most informative
>>2984662Don't even bother, they are toys. Don't expect anything useful from them. The only "maybe" you could do with it is filling small cavities and plugging smallish holes, but that's a very specific use case.
>>2984776I saw a guy restore a big hole in a computer case with one.
>>2984662If epoxy putty was good enough for the ancient Egyptians then it's good enough for you.
>>2984784this might be true, but I do like how the substance squeezes out with the pen thoughseems less messy
>>2984778And I saw a guy repair a porcelain sink with ramen. What's your point?>>2984662The best way I know to repair plastic is melting/welding it. Tons of videos on YouTube. Basically get a special tip for your soldering iron or would burner and use it to melt the plastic back together. You can use doner plastic of the same type to repair missing areas. People also do stuff like melt wire or mesh into the plastic to give it extra strength. The hardest part can be identifying what kind of plastic you are working with.
>>2984808>What's your point? That you're a moron that has no clue what they're talking about.
i saw a guy test these and they are a meme.the strongest repairs were just heating the joint with a heatgun until the plastics melted back together.just like welding metals, these just create cold welds that don't hold up because they don't penetrate into the base material. unless all your repairs are just cosmetic and non-load bearing then this will probably be fine but still be worse for that because it looks like shit.if you want repairs stronger than the original you can look into getting stainless steel mesh to cut to size and meld into the plastic while it's still molten from heating up, or staples.
My sister's kids had one of those 3d printer pens that they outgrew and stopped using so she sent it over for my kid to mess with. I plugged it in and fiddled with it for a while. They're pretty much useless and a toy. My 7 year old has fun fiddling with it and making little trinkets, but once the filament is gone I doubt I will be ordering any more... Zero real world application.
>>2984662I have three. the scrib3d are a toy but they work okay, I main a mynt3d. you can get tons of filament samplers for them and run PLA or ABS in the good ones. they are a bit wonky and I highly recommend a mini 3d printer over the pen but you can actually make stronger stuff with the pens because they don't have layer line weakness.the technique is different too as you can pull straight lines and hold tension on them while they cool. you can build a framework and build up solid parts.as far as repairs they won't be as good as epoxy or jb weld, there is nothing holding the plastic on unless you're melting that thing too and it mixes with the plastic in the pen. not that that might not be feasible but the first thing I reach for when repairing and actual 3d print from the printer is not the pen but a wood burning tool. it's much better for sustained heat and temperature control - the pens are "smart" in that they won't heat if you're not feeding filament so it's difficult to keep them hot for non additive work.>>2984776"nobody makes anything but toys with 3d printer" tier comment. eat a dick>>2984890>they are a memeI heard 3d printers were a meme too>>2984913my kids have made some dope fucking shit with their pens, maybe the problem isn't the pens...
>>2984662i got a cheap one years ago and it sucked ass. its been awhile but i think my biggest issue was the feed motor seemed inconsistent or possibly the heater couldn't keep up so it was just not fun
>>2984938very cool plastic birds nests, your kids have a bright future ahead of them!the landfill is going to love adding their work to the collection.
>>2984938>my kids have made some dope fucking shit with their pens, maybe the problem isn't the pens...Can we see this dope fucking shit?
