Why did YOU get into this? Any and all stories are appreciated. For me it was watching Gilligan’s Island and seeing how the professor could make anything out of anything, and then seeing how almost all the props were simple things I could make. But then I went down the rabbit hole and learned “this is the right way” and “this is the wrong way” and it just became a hobby, lifestyle, and career. Seems dumb but I’ve always been curious as to what your origin stories are. Best wishes to all of you, and thank you to all for all of the knowledge I’ve learned on this board. Some of you have put food on my table, and I can’t thank you enough.
Born and raised on a dairy and farm and later farm and ranch. Grew up with my dad doing damn near everything he could and helping him with it. It wasn't really a choice, it is just the way it had to be. We did put up a fairly decent farm shop when I was in junior high and the amount of diy projects and tools kinda exploded after that.
>>2985877Loved MacGyver and the A-Team as a kid. Lego bricks were my toys of choice. Got into computers early and was building them by my teens. When I became an adult I got into old tools, old electronics, old computers/video game systems. Getting shit like that working and keeping them working requires a lot of DIY. Also owning my own house. Theres' always something that needs doing.
>>2985877I'm just an ego tripping schizo who thinks he can do everything himself. I'm also antisocial to the point where I fixed my own water heater because I was uncomfortable with calling the tradie more than I was scared of blowing up my house
>>2985877>I'm also antisocial to the point where I fixed my own water heater because I was uncomfortable with calling the tradie more than I was scared of blowing up my houseAlso this. I don't want strangers on my property.
>>2985934Eww people. Who wants to interact with them?
>>2985877My family could literally could not afford anything growing up.(besides food and roof over our heads)Even if we got anything like appliance and it broke, that was it, no way to fix it because we didn't know how or repairman charged way too much for what it was.My father had a friend that was a machinist so he helped us sometimes to patch things up but you could tell we were relying on him for everything to be fixed so he kinda started avoiding us lmao He was a great guy always helped , but he died recently, RIP ;_; he was my inspiration.
>>2985965Kinda this. I was the child of a single mom with 3 kids and my dad was a drunk who didn’t pay his child support most of the time. These days it’s like 50/50 that I don’t want to spend the money paying other people and I don’t trust a lot of “Professionals” because they care about your shit a lot less than you do.
>>2985877>What made you want to get into this lifestyle?a group of people living off the land who constantly always do the wrong thing?no I don't want to be communist.
>>2986017>a group of people living off the land who constantly always do the wrong thing?Speak for yourself. I only do the right things.
>>2985877You had a choice? I was just told to start fixing shit and at work they started telling me fix shit
>>2985877>What made you want to get into this lifestyle?MaryAnne, she was not stuck up like Ginger. And living in a home built bamboo hut and having a new adventure every week seemed like a good idea at the time.
>>2985877My old man He a was a blue collar man, a strong man who could fix anything in the house if he had the right tools, the radio beside him blasting football and a big of mug of tea or coffee, the only thing he refused to do was electrician shit as he knows it better to get someone to handle that stuff. Most of the time he told me and my older brother "This is a one man job, if it goes wrong it be my fault, but you can watch" he only needed help when he needed someone to hold onto something be it a plank of wood as he was cutting it or a plaster board on the ceiling when he was working on his man cave where he spends his retirement days at working on his train project these day and I guess I wanted to be like him, to look at a problem in the house and fix it myself without having to call someone and so far it been good, I have fallen into that "This is the right way, my way" mindset though
>>2985877Because making and fixing things is fun. And the older I get, the more I realize how much more difficult and expensive life would be if I didn't know how to fix and mend shit myself.
>>2986016Brown,purple and yellow 3 phase with a leaver switch. Is this in an American factory somewhere?Being poor and having expensive interests is what has driven me to diyLearning industrial electrical i can do most things as long as I do a bit of research first Its taken a while though because I am the first person in my immediate family to be interested in fast cars
>>2988940It’s a shutoff for a 480V 3 phase air conditioning unit. So yea, non-residential US stuff
>>2988940In what episode of Seinfeld did Kramer ride a dirtbike?
>>2985877>But then I went down the rabbit holeWhy are you like this?Did you actually go down a rabbit hole?
>>2985877My dad made me the flashlight holder while he worked, we were poor so he did everything himself. Now I have a house and kids of my own. If I didn't do stuff myself I'd be broke after a couple projects. Also want my kids to learn they can do things themselves and helplessness is a choice. And its fun.>>2986016I sweat pipes better than the "professionals" that built the house I live in. My house was definitely built by coke heads.>>2988824I have friends that spend hundreds even thousands on projects they could easily do themselves. Not a problem if you got the money, but I also have to hear them cry broke constantly. Its retarded.
>Gilligan's island>macgyver>A team How old are you guys?
