When I was in university, I saw that some PhD student wrote a thesis about feminism. I don't remember exactly what it was about, but I do remember that he ranted about how society systemically discriminates against women, going so far as to say that women who disagreed with him were brainwashed by the patriarchy, only for him to point to BDSM as a counterexample, saying that it empowers women. I think about that quite a bit, even after all these years. On one hand, there is something genuinely feminist about how BDSM promotes consent. On the other hand, BDSM is explicitly meant to normalize violence against women. With the exception of male subs, who aren't nearly as common as female subs (something a feminist might want to think about), BDSM is about bossing women around and hitting them if they don't obey. I don't think that there's anything wrong with that if the woman consents, and I understand that the sub actually has the power in a BDSM relationship, but I don't understand how this radical feminist was so okay with beating women.
