I am a museum curator. Idk how to dress. Does this feel appropriate? Its hard to figure out what I should dress like, as I'm the only male employee really. Its not a big museum. I'm 5'11.
I was thinking like dark academia adjacent but I'm unsure of myself. Can anyone recommend anything?

I can only wear wide shoes because I like to be able to wiggle my toes. If I can't wiggle my toes I won't wear it. My pinkie toe needs room. I'm not going to torture my feet.

If you can recommend good shoes that come in wide sizes that would be great.
>>
>>18507261
Just get normal shoes but size up, most people just don't know how to size their shoes properly.

Just lean into Dark Academia in the fall and winter and Old Money in the spring and summer. Just don’t go overboard with them. Stick to traditional items. Polos are fine, but they’re summer and country club coded. Lighter tones and the occasional pastel are good but mostly in the summer. Khakis can be good but mostly in the summer. Light brown loafers can look good but mostly in the summer. Meanwhile, a black turtleneck is a winter item. Dark browns, maroon, dark green, etc. and really thick or textured fabrics, for example cords, look best in fall and winter. Oxford shirts, basic trousers, and black or darker brown penny loafers can be worn year-round and just layered with a sweater when it gets cold. Colors that can be worn year-round are navy, lighter blue, oxford stripe, grey, white (for shirts), sort of grey-green, grey-navy, and grey-brown (for pants). When it gets cold you can incorporate a little bankercore with a vest or a fleece. But oxford shirts, simple dress trousers and chinos, and black or dark brown penny loafers should be your staples.

Your waistline should be straight and the pants need to be longer to lay over the shoes more. Belt buckle is a little too square if I'm being pedantic. Pull your polo out of your pants a bit.

The guides will lead you astray. Just listen to the advice to wear chinos and dress trousers, oxford cloth button downs and dress shirts, and penny loafers with matching belt. This is like the essential core of any trad or trad-adjacent aesthetic like dark academia. Once you have this then you can start acquiring certain sweaters or cardigans, corduroy pants, swapping the button down with a turtleneck, stuff like that. But for now, you literally could not go wrong wearing grey or charcoal trousers with a white button down and loafers every single day. And for the love of god, get some dress socks to match the pants.

Fellow straight museum worker here.

You're getting gassed up for nice shoulders, but I'd be cautious about recklessly wielding them even if you you look good. there's probably a difference between what you find attractive on a woman and how you'd want a female manager to dress.

polo shirts are a good bet but they should be untucked and mostly cotton. Definitely not this slick nylon looking material. both shirt and pants are just on the edge of being too tight.

for important meetings, e.g. with donors, you'll want some button up shirts and a suit (tie optional). don't buy these too tight or you'll look like a real lunk out of his social class.

a nice watch makes you look important but don't go crazy on expense. the shoes are the only thing that look suitably dorky like people might expect from a curator. some nice unadorned or captoe derbies would elevate you a bunch, but if you buy all birds you deserve to have your ass kicked.

disregard this entire comment if you're curating a military museum and keep doing what you're doing.
>>
>>18507229
Clown shoes looking good, could do with some color. Dark jewel and earth tones would look elegant and striking. Tartan patterns like >>18507233 add a vibe of sophistication. I don’t care if it’s 70 degrees inside, outer layers are nonnegotiable if you want to look the part. Long coats in the aforementioned colors, trench or pea. Depends a lot on what kind of museum though. I second the derby boot recommendation

>>18507229
Your clothes should communicate your knowledge level
If you know about what is in the museum and can hold a conversation about it, then dress like a professor and you will attract conversation about those things.
If you cannot and do not wish to be asked about nerdy historical things, dress like a security guard more or less, and people will not expect you to be knowledge able about them

>>18507229
Get some suits, you're buff so they'll have to be tailored or they may fit weirdly. Wear polos or casual shirts underneath. Switch up the suit jacket for a sweater or long sleeve polo sometimes, or wear those with the jacket if it's cold. You'll look smart but not pretentious
Dark academia is gay

Seems to match the aesthetic, but until you put them on can't say much. Fit was what killed your second outfit.
>>
>>18510413
Yeah, looks pretty good in isolation. The waist measurement shouldn’t be more than an inch larger than your actual waist if you intend to tuck those in so for your sake I hope you measured in advance.

Does it ever get cold where you are? A well fitted coat or jacket will elevate these basic items from “put together” to fashionable, though a good one will cost you
>>
>>18507229
belt color should match loafer color. i dont know why you chose black loafers, but next time get brown. Also get a watch, like an apple watch and then get different kinds of bracelets/bands for it.

>>18507938
shirt seems like it fits, but IMO stripes are an eyesore that will also make you look fat. something seems off about your belt, and is that a stain on your pants? idk the shoes could've been better.

That said, your style isn't necessarily bad, it just needs a little more developing

New pants. Coworker complimented them. Was going to wear a tie but I was struggling to get it to look right.

Shirt cost me 8$, pants 25$
>>
The pants are too long. You need a shorter inseam. Other than that, just the shoes aren’t great. But this is fine.
>>
>>18510413
Shorts are totally inappropriate for work
>>
>>18513072
This kind of shirt is exactly what you want. Collect more in whites and lighter blues.

The pants just need to be shorter, perhaps less baggy or slim fit (hard to tell which is your problem but they’re definitely too short). The color is good. More monochrome and earth tones like this: dark grey, light grey, khaki, navy, grey-green, etc. would be good.

The shoes are autistcore. Go to Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, any traditional footwear store that you can actually afford and get some penny loafers in black or brown. You can pickup a pair of Blundstones in the later fall to trudge around in if you get a lot of rain or snow. Always make sure your belt matches in color and sheen and try to match the same kind of leather if you can.

Lastly, pick up assorted blazers and dress jackets, sweaters, coats, and fleeces as you see fit. And there you go. You’ve just compiled a wardrobe that you can wear to literally any white collar or remotely high brow job.
>>
>>18513087
Fucking millennial. Those pants look baggy to you? They're already too slim, which is why the pockets are flaring out. They need to be looser, and he needs to pull them up instead of sagging them like a fag. Dress pants look like shit if they're slim fit. And if your pant's crotch is bunching at the bottom and the zipper is folding up, then you need to fucking pull your pants up. The problem of the excess length will also be solved with that.
>>
>>18513111
The pockets are flaring out because of his tight top low belt you zoomer retard. Whether you have pants that are too baggy or too slim, cinching them tightly at the waist will make the pockets flare because they’re pulled upward. I didn’t even bother reading the rest of your drivel because you don’t know shit. Leave this board and never return.

Yours are twice as long or even more than a full break. The fact that your pants are slim fit makes them look even worse because they're stacking on your shoes entirely. Those are dress pants, not slim fit jeans. Cuff them or hem them.
>>
>>18513153
The pants aren’t bad bro. They are just slightly too long and not tailored, or maybe your belt is too tight.
