Last winter I bought a coat and I was, in hindsight, the correct decision. It is warm, protects against wind and you don't look like an idiot wearing it.The only category a jacket is superior (than my coat, your choice may benefit here but have other tradeoffs) is in protection against wetness. Even after prolonged exposure to light rain or short exposure to medium rain, I have to hang it up to dry. So yeah, make an informed decision based on your environment
