You need to learn how to talk to your stylist, and if they're ignoring you, you need to just move on to a different one. Bring pictures. Learn what the different words mean. Chances are you're not talking to them, you're just saying useless shit like "uh, long on the top I guess" and hoping they'll read your mind.
Also find out the going rate for a simple male haircut at a cheap barber in your area, and then multiply that by 5x. That amount is the bare minimum for a decent cut from a stylist. If you're paying $20-30 in a first world country, you're not going to the right kind of place for what you're expecting.
