Soviet watches are extremely cheap, look cool and are more reliable and accurate than the vast majority of vintage Swiss watches. You have to pay attention to fakes and frankens, though. The market is full of them.

Anyone knows where to buy casio modules? I want to put the a168 module into my a158 but the only retailer I could find that sells only the module instead of the whole watch was SKXMOD and they are asking fucking $30 for a module that comes from a $25 watch
I thought about buying a SKMEI module and putting it inside the a158 case but apparently those have terrible accuracy. Pls halp?

hmm; quartz, mineral glass, indiglo, 50m wr.
it's got a nice field watch style, but not sure it's any different than a weekender. but I like weekenders, and you paid about the same, so it's all good.
I'm happy to be wrong. do you or anyone know if it's distinct in some way? maybe the case is more durable, that would make sense. the plating on my weekender is not very durable.
>>
>>18534541
My 1628 is maybe half a second ahead after three months.
Anyway, with such cheap models you have to (make sure the module fits and then) gut another watch.
>>

overplayed from the reviews i read before buying. sure, i can hear ticking next to me on my night stand when i sleep, but it's not distracting/disturbing. don't know if it's any better than the weekend as i don't have one.

larger (40mm vs 38mm), date window.

At some point I'd like to have a "fun" colorful watch in my collection that I can wear with more interesting outfits or events like art shows, concerts, etc. I really dig the look of this watch but I refuse to wear one that is hard to read/can't tell the time well therefore detracting from its true purpose. Has anyone seen anything in the ball park of pic rel, but with numerals/legible hands so it wouldn't take 30 seconds to figure out what time it is?

Modern Vostok 24xx calibers are shit my dude, get a NOS vintage if possible.
Their mainspring is made of bad steel and breaks, also the craftsmanship of the wheels themselves is bad and they tend to stop for no good reason due to poor tolerances.

Most of the time it's easy. Know the lug width mm of the watch. If you buy a generic nylon strap, it usually comes with a spring bar remover (black one on photo). Remove the spring bars from the back, just be careful not to scratch the watch. Aside from black, green and khaki are very safe. Orange, yellow if you want bright colors. If you plan to get leather, rubber or other sailcloth strap colors, get the ones with quick release spring bars.

When are they going to put this display on the f91w and/or its variations? It's quite literally their most sold product and it still nets them ~3 million units sold every year
>>
>>18537018
Not at all, if you have at least a semblance of fine motor control.
Lay the watch crystal down on a table. When you remove the spring bar, make sure to keep it shortened until the end you have working with has been lifted above the watch, otherwise you will drop it and scratch the lug. Same goes for installing it after.
Once you have done it a couple of times it becomes second nature.

Armitron and Timex seem to have more steel case/bracelet combo options than the small Casios.
>>
>>18537553
In addition, what I've noticed with these digi quartz with stainless steel case and bracelet is that they cost way more than the standard resin case with stainless bracelet, so check for discounts or grey market including the Casio A1000.
The prices are also already in level with Aliex watch brands, thin 36mm watches using Seiko or Miyota analog quartz.
The advantage of the resin case is that it's light and the watch doesn't wiggle too much. The downside is that if feels cheap, and the flat shiny case looks deformed from the uneven reflection it produces, at least from my experience.
>>
>>18537518
this is good because it's light
if it was heavy the shitty bracelet would be even more awful

>>
>>18537925
That is automatic and the movement, like most of them, is already seiko.
>>
>>18537929
Yes, I saw that. I don't want an automatic, their inacuraccy means the second hand is pure decoration. And I also don't want to lose the original water-proofing after 3 years just to replace a battery.
So I'm only looking at solar and kinetic quartz, and the Citizen checks literally all my boxes. Also got a good deal on it for 280€.

Left is the yardstick field watch, the absolute standard. Right is a knockoff of the murph from the same brand which is also a field watch but more dressed up to the point that it's essentially a casual dress watch.
>>
>>18537999
They're both just hamilton knockoffs. But woth any watch you should buy the bracelet version so you have the option. You can buy and will buy hundreds of straps.
>>
>>18537977
A lot of popular, established watch brands sound weird if you hear them first without brand pre-conditioning from childhood.
>>
>>18538012
Baltany doesn't have this problem. Addiesdive and escapement time peobably have the worst names which sucks since they are some of the best value for money. San martin has a relatively bad name that reminds me of a carnival cruise in the caribbean. And the tag huer style logo is probably the worst one they could have knocked off. Sugess is a good name as is seestern. In terms of chinese brand names militado is not bad at all and falls in the middle imo.

[Citizen BN0260-54L]
The color is a lot more muted than I expected, the bezel is noticeably darker and looks almost black. But I haven't seen it in the sun yet.
Read online that the minute hand is too short but it's not an issue in reality.
Bezel klicks are nice and crisp, perfectly aligned with literally zero play.
Second hand also hits the markers nicely.
The pin-and-collar bracelet surprised me but luckily I didn't lose any. Still easier to open and close than a Seiko.
Wears smaller and thinner than I expected, which I like. Perfect size for my tiny 6.5" wrist, but the clasp is really long and shouldn't have been any longer.
If your wrists are bigger, one of the 43mm Promasters will be a much better look for a diver.
Overall, in awe at the build quality at this price point.

How come Seiko 5 now start at $300??
Their entry point used to be at 60.
And for that price you got a serviceable automatic watch that had a timeless, understated design, would run within +/-10 seconds instead of the officially stated +/-30 and last you a lifetime without pampering it.
Pic related, the shitter entry watch that got me interested in mechanical watches, currently on ebay scratched to hell for triple its new price.

don't use a phone app to check the accuracy of your watch: your phone mic and speaker have strong magnets in it. wave any part of your phone near a compass and the needle will twirl around, strongest near the mic you use for the app.
my watch is magnetized. it may have been before but I didn't learn about the compass trick until after I used the app. my watch makes the needle spin around.
demagnetizing is supposed to be trivial but I don't have one so I have to go to a shop.
>>
>>18541153
Very unlikely unless you wear a vintage 50s-60s watch. Ever since the 70s and 80s (depending on the country) watch hairsprings have been made by non-magnetic alloys.
>>
>>18541198
so if the case and everything else besides the hairspring is magnetized it doesn't matter?
>>
>>18541220
I don't think your phone speakers are going to be strong enough to stop a gear
>>
>>18541230
well for whatever reason my watch is definitely magnetized right now, but the movement is modern.
so answer the question.
>>
>>18541220
1. It's unlikely that this is the case.
2. The mechanical forces of the mainspring are far stronger than any magnetic force in parts other than the hairspring. Also, they don't necessarily interfere with the gear works.
>>
>>18541272
>It's unlikely that this is the case
ferrous metal exposed to magnetic fields strong enough or over enough time magnetizes the metal.
when I pass my watch over a still compass, the needle spins around.
why do YOU think this is?

if it doesn't matter, then why do they make special anti magnetic watches for people who work around magnetic fields?

>ferrous metal exposed to magnetic fields strong enough or over enough time magnetizes the metal.
>when I pass my watch over a still compass, the needle spins around.
>why do YOU think this is?
Stray magnetism in the compass needle itself.

>if it doesn't matter, then why do they make special anti magnetic watches for people who work around magnetic fields?

Because of old-timey ferromagnetic hairsprings which haven't been produced in the last 40-50 years because of the exact problem you are worried about. Also, the so-called "magnetically impermeable" watches were just normal watches with a thin sheet of lead in the back of the casing, pic related.
>>
>>18541220
>if the case
Steel watch cases are typically made out of either 304l or 316l steel, both of which are not magnetic.

Jesus christ nigger just use quartz
>More reliable
>More accurate
>More cost effective

This is genuinely the only hobby where spending more money gets you an objectively worse product
>>
>>18541820
Objectively, quartz is better if all you need is a watch that tells the time.
Objectively, you don't need a watch for that at all. You have a phone and there are clocks everywhere you might need one.
Objectively, quartz lacks everything people still buy watches for.
To me it's a morning ritual - choose the watch for the day, maybe choose a strap for it, wind it, set the time precisely to the second and put it on.
I don't give a fuck if it gains or loses a second per hour. It'll still show the correct time in the evening, and I'll set it again the next time I wear it.
>>
>>18537418
Why do people even bother with gshocks? I get that they are good products, and the $100-200 price range for the lower end ones is fine for a good product that is probably indestructible by design.
BUT. I bought my little shitass A168 back in high school in 2015 and since then it has seen a decade of swimming, daily showering, fishing, geology field work, falling down a mountain, excess heat, freezing, and the little guy is still going strong.
That is 10 years of reliability. Water has never intruded into the display, I have never had an issue with sand or mud or grime, the stock folded metal band only snags my arm hair every now and then and really isn't bad, it doesn't feel hot or cold during heat waves or freezes. I could probably be thrown out of an airplane, struck by lightning on the way down, and smacked into the caldera of a volcano and buried for another 10 years and by the time by body is recovered, my casio would get back to work with a quick button battery replacement. These things are a marvel of human ingenuity lol

They lack one key feature - serviceability. A good analog quartz movement can give you 15 years of service AT BEST if you are lucky to get a proper piece, as they are all different off the same assembly line. Cheap-o dime-a-dozen movements last a bit less than 3 years, think chink shitter $1 Miyota. They are also prone to electronic component wear where they become wildly inaccurate or just battery leakage.
A well-serviced quality mechanical watch can last more than a generation.
>>
>>18541976
This is a thread for watches under 500 dollars. Most mechanical watches wouldn't make financial sense to get serviced anyway. I have a couple cheap automatic watches, and when their time comes I'll just be chucking out the movement and putting a new one in since a full service would cost more than the watch itself did.
>>
>>18541988
This, literally just buy another nh35 for $25
>>
>>18541988
Do your service yourself. I learned on some soviet watches, one of them I got for $4, and I still wear some of them because I like the vintage aesthetic.
>>
>>18542048
Another thing is,, you are talking about modern watches. If you like wearing vintage watches that are out of production, sourcing brand new movements is a lot harder.
>>
>>18541820
>This is genuinely the only hobby where spending more money gets you an objectively worse product
Lol no, it’s not only one.
>>
>>18542048
How did you do it? Take pictures, disassemble, assemble? What oils/lubricants did you use?
>>
>>18542051
Tinker with 50-100 movements over the years with $20 worth of Aliexpress tools which ruined half of said movements.
A good place to start is old, barely-working Soviet or cheap-o Swiss movement lots with some basic screwdrivers, needle-tip tweezers, lighter fluid for bathing the components and removing old oils (make sure to use the name-brand stuff, bootleg ones contain turpentine oils). The oils I used are also Chinese ones, they have two basic types, coarser for alarm clocks and finer for wrist/pocket watches. I just used the finer one for all parts in a vintage watch, if it's an old 18,000 BPH one it makes no difference, 21,600 BPH or more you need some of the bougier Moebius oils.
Yeah, you can find tons of tutorials in watchUseek or youtube, it's just nerve wracking in the beginning before you develop steady hands.
Practice, practice, practice. Protips:
1. Never force screws when tightening, when they no longer give, leave them be.
2. Never oil the anchor's pallet jewels.
3. Never unscrew crown stem bolts fully.
4. Set the watch to time-setting mode (pull the crown) before removing the winding stem.
Thank me later.

I realized I can get decent vintage watch for 20 bucks or less, and anything above a $70 stainless steel case Japanese automatic is overpriced, overhyped brand worship. The only high-end watches I might admire are concept pieces by Patek with their 20+ complications and they still serve as a proof of concept for fine engineering capabilities rather than a practical watch, a watch like that would require constant complicated maintenance to run properly.
I understand a Bugatti car might be more powerful and more pleasant to drive, but a Lada can be fixed in the middle of a highway with a flathead screwdriver, a rubber band, a chapstick and a single adjustable wrench, both of which are kept under the back seats along with spare parts. It's an extreme example but you probably get what I mean.

This, you only have so many arms to keep a watch on, a $10-$30 Casio shitter for sports and the outdoors and a dress watch for out-and-about is enough. You might get a second dress watch with gold plating and a brown strap if you wear brown leather.

PSA for everyone considering buying a modern Russian watch. They still use the same outdated, vintage movements designed (bought and slightly improved) from the 60s, 70s and 80s. They are good workhorses for the most part, Raketa 26xx ones can run for 20 years while being bone dry and keep decent time. That being said, there is no justification for their pricing.

They are fully in-house manufactured by white women.

That watch benefits from a black or dark brown leather strap with white seams.

By getting a cheap casio that is both versatile and cheap enough that I can wear everywhere without caring about scratches. Once you do that you realize you've solved watches and building a collection is retarded because you'll only wear the same 3 watches and the rest of the collection will just sit in storage, only to be taken once or twice a month

Why not just swap the bracelet for a strap?
>>
>>18544889
Why spend the extra 30-40 for the bracelet if youre just gonna put it on a strap anyway?

Are there cheaper options with that same size/look? All I’m wanting is a cheap 36-38mm analog with day/date that either lights up when I press in the crown, or glows in the dark. Basically my Casio F-91W but in analog shape.

All the timex models I listed off seem to be around 20-30 dollars cheaper on amazon than the one you were asking about. I didn't know you wanted it for the day/date though, none of the watches I suggested have that. Weekender has no day or date and Easy Reader/Expedition has just date. The one you were asking about doesn't glow when you push the crown though, only watches with "indiglo" written on the dial will do that. I'd have to imagine the lume on the hands would be pretty shit at this price point too.

Actually, my mistake. The one you wanted has indiglo too, it just was written in smaller font on the bottom.

The ones you don't buy.
