Weekdater Edition

This thread offers a forum to discuss and debate wristwatches, pocket watches, and clocks. Several members here are highly knowledgeable in specified areas of horology, so please contribute to the thread by asking questions and/or asking for advice if you are planning on purchasing a watch from an AD or the grey market. Please post pics of your watches here; it doesn't matter if it's worth 5$ or 5,000$, because there might be someone who wishes to eventually purchase the same model that you own and would love to hear some real-world advice regarding ownership. The experience matters the most, not the price.

Everyone is welcome in this thread, because we are all Frens here.

I wouldn't know, i just enjoy them very much.
It would be nice if it wasn't just me spamming pics of Seikos here, we used to have many posters that posted many different watches. Maybe i should visit some watch sites every day and bring back a pic or two, that would live up the thread.

Lads, what are your thought on an Omega Seamaster 300? I am considering purchasing one as a gift for my brother. I am very close with him, he enjoys watches, but has not ever purchased or owned a high end watch before, while I have. Figured I might be generous since I have hit some financial goals lately. Also considering a Tudor Pelagos 39

Seamaster is the better watch overall as far as brand, movement, fit and finish, etc. is concerned. New style Omega bracelet is not great though, the microadjustment slider is rattly and crude.
The Pelagos is a better watch if your brother will actually dive with it, the serrated and fully lumed bezel + snowflakes are much more legible in water/dark, plus the spring loaded bracelet with microadjustments is a lot nicer.

Can't really go wrong either way, and both are a better choice than a submariner outside of brand association and resale value.
>>
>>18537343
>New style Omega bracelet is not great though, the microadjustment slider is rattly and crude.
This is nonsense. The current Omega bracelet is week-made in terms of construction. It does not rattle. It is, however, a pain the ass to resize with its tiny screws and ridiculously strong thread-locker. Its micro adjustment mechanism is fine.
>>
>>18537185
Like that pasta the Tooterfag kept trying to force: Tudor whispers taste.
The “taste” in this case is the tiny taste of Rolex quality you get from a Tudor since you can’t afford the whole dish.
>>
>>18537395
>It does not rattle.
Just got back from a weekend in Vegas and bought a brand new Seamaster from the Omega store in Bellagio.
Tried on and compared 5 different seamasters side by side, all on bracelets, and all of them rattled.
>Its micro adjustment mechanism is fine.
It works fine, yes, but the mechanism is not as elegant as the Rolex/Tudor style with its one oversized slider link and it does, in fact, rattle.

My biggest thing for money has been driving a shit box car. I briefly owned a half decent car (2 years) but it was still 15 years old and to not go on holidays. I had never left the town I grew up in until I was 19 years old, I left again once on a holiday at 22.

My story isn’t one of a silver spoon. The town I grew up in has some of the highest unemployment and lowest wages in the country I live in. I lived in the worst suburb of the area with my parents, both never had any money generational, one side were dirt poor farmers and the other were dirt poor coal miners. I worked part time in high school, saved like a squirrel, moved out with my girlfriend at 21, couldn’t get a decent job for 3 years out of high school because the unemployment rate was so high, so was doing part time minimum wage. Ended up getting a job in a factory which paid less than minimum wage, got a job at another factory paying about average, moved to a town with high wages, my now wife makes great money as a nurse.

Honestly, saving and investing, I have not earnt my way to having a substantial sum of money. I saved my way there and invested my way there. I make about the average income for my country.

I don’t event have that much money, I am just very fond of my brother, and while I moved to a place with a better economic outlook, he stayed in the same town we grew up in, much to his financial detriment, so I feel like throwing him a bone and buying him something nice

what makes a watch ultra luxury?
>>
>>18538500
A combination of
- superior workmanship and/or innovation in terms of design and materials
- high price (there is NO way to afford this if you’re middle class)
- exclusivity (I don’t care if you can afford it. We made 100 of them and they’ve all been sold. We’re not making more.)
>>
>>18538503
At what price point does ultra luxury start?

Depending on the level of exclusivity, roughly around 80-100k USD. There’s no hard and fast number.

Maybe that one-off tourbillon.
>>
>>18538513
No. Even the idea of Credor having their own movements is silly. It’s like when Longines talks about having an “in-house” movement.
They’re just Seiko movements with different modules bolted on and finished to a _slightly_ higher degree.
>>
>>18538510

>They’re just Seiko movements with different modules bolted on and finished to a _slightly_ higher degree.
QRD?
>>
>>18538517
Instead of making a dedicated GMT and a dedicated chronograph and all of the above in a dozen different sizes, Seiko will build a base architecture for a movement. They’re will then design modules they can bolt onto that base architecture and turn it into a different movement. This saves tons of money because building a modular system is cheaper than building every movement from scratch.

In order to make their more expensive sub-brands seem less like just jumped-up Seikos, they will make certain modules only available in watches for the upper brands.
>>
>>18538522
Cont.

Think about Omega and their coaxial stuff. Omega does not make movements. The ETA facilities Swatch owns makes movements. Making the coaxial stuff exclusively available in Omega watches disguises the fact that your Seamaster’s movement is made in the same place as a Tissot PRX’s.

Should have gotten the next size down. That looks huge on you.

The Tangente design, with its long lugs, whisper-thin bezel and spare, white dial always wears MUCH larger than the numbers suggest.
A 39mm Nomos definitely doesn’t wear like a 39mm Omega or whatever.
You should have gone for the 35mm. That would look better.

It’s not, but I get it. It doesn’t cost anything to live in denial.

NTA, but he’s right. It’s too big. Nomos wear very large and dressy watches should lean on the smaller side.

It looks quite fine on you, Anon. Ignore the pajeet wristlets.
A spezialist or Sinn is on my list for next acquisition, soon as I can decide on a specific model.

The only Sinn worth buying is the one thats made out of kriegsmarine steel.

I am leaning towards the glasshutte, all the Sinn models look a little too industrial for me.

Someone has posted a green GO diver here before. It looked pretty good. Very high quality but ridiculously overpriced for what you’re getting.
