Looking to switch up my cologne. This has been my bread and butter for a while now but I'm considering getting Bleu de Chanel.
Is it just a meme or is it worth the hype?
Wouldn't mind also getting a Tom Ford like Oud Wood or Tobacco Vanille.
Thoughts? Don't want to stray too far from By The Fireplace, as I really like a sweeter fragrance.

Dakar is trash that spoils after a year because the bottle isnt even sealed correctly. I put on real drakkar noir from a brand nee “reformulated” bottle at 7pm yesterday and still smell it 14 hrs later. This cope has to stop, your nose is fucking broken. Arab slop “fragrance” was a mistake.

Got a bottle of L'Artisan Perfumeur's Fleur de Liane. I thought it was going to be more feminine but it turns into something unisex bordering masculine. It starts with a burst of green, that intense smell of when you break the stem of a marigold. It's not a cheap sharp green scent but realistic and it permeates the composition. I actually get more of the oceanic notes at the base, they are probably at the top too and have an effect on the fragrance but it's easier for me to pick them up when it's one of the few notes left. After the opening there is a brief floral section with some nice magnolia but it doesn't last. There is nothing about it that smells perfumy or artificial, it's very natural and realistic. Fragrances like this feel at the same time lazy and highly skilled. It simply smells like walk on the verdant wilderness but to accomplish this takes quite a lot of skill. This is not a mainstream scent, unless you think smelling like a tagete stem is mainstream, it smell almost brutal to me. It doesn't project but surprisingly it lasts quite a bit close to the skin, probably because of the moss on the base holding it together. The moss and woodiness at the base is quite unique because you still get oceanic and green notes till the end. I don't like to embellish or wax poetically but what I'll say is that the combination of realistic green and oceanic notes is quite complex.

how about sampling some fragrances rather than falling for babbys first cologne
>>
>>18542360
Funnily, this is probably the only frag I'd be interested in hunting down a vintage bottle of, to see what it was really like 30 years ago. Because yeah, the current bottle I own is majestic.
>>
>>18542374
BdC is the quintessential blue fragrance. Personally can't get behind the incense drydown (tried EdP). You've likely smelled many fragrances that are in that genre and it's harder to justify paying the full retail price that Chanel demands when more modern blues exist, even in the niche realm if you're really looking for the best. It does have a niche as being the most professional blue you'll typically find at department stores but since you're here you can probably find an alternative. Lastly, it's the most sold men's fragrances, you will smell like many other men, particularly middle aged men who have been rocking BdC for over almost two decades.

I've run out of almost all of my frags, which gives me an excuse to buy new stuff
For the winter and special occasions I've already settled on Jazz Club because it's simply the sexiest scent I've ever smelled, everyone loves it

>>
>>18542374
BdC is good if you can find a deal on it secondhand. Its not worth the retail price. It’s very versatile and easy to wear and it has that chanel charm to it. Its neither a meme nor worth the hype its just a good simple fragrance for men. I love tobacco vanille and if you like the sweetness of BTF you’ll love TV. You might also like Angels Share. I’m wearing that today and it’s really lovely.

>What's the summer equivalent to Jazz Club?
There isn't one, it's a heavy sweet scent
>>
>>18542426
>equivalent to Jazz Club
equivalent in what sense? i doubt you'll find a boozy tobacco for the summer. in any case, go for Bois Imperial or Vibrato. can't go wrong with those
>>18542452
MR is tame on the animalics, i don't even think it's animalic, maybe a little musky but nothing wild. i got Khiel's Original Musk and apparently it's quite close to MKK. i haven't tried MKK, but i did try Carnicure and it was similar. in terms of wearable animalics, i go for Antaeus and NYI.
>>18542466
i am not a fan of the pear note. Fleur Narcotique was better imo

>>18542520

Huh. The Gay Dragon did a review on it and mentions the presence of castoreum which also isn’t listed, so what do I know.

You may be right about the presence of civet or other musks, by I stand by the fact that I wouldn’t call it an animalic fragrance by a long shot.
>>
>>18542526
>I wouldn’t call it an animalic fragrance by a long shot.
i agree desu
>>
>>18542524
Parfumo only lists the musk, and their current website also only lists musk, so that’s what I was going off of, but yeah sure enough >>18542520 there it is.

I’m no NYI connoisseur but if I had to take a stab in the dark I’d guess they just de-listed the notes because they’re such (at least to my nose, and I would guess many others) minimal part of the perceived profile.

Thank you Anon for the info/pic.

Finally got my sample of L'Air du Désert Marocain Noir in and had the chance to sample it. Simply put, it ain’t worth the money. It’s not much different from ACDD, or even LADDM for that matter.

Sadly it really feels like Tauer is leaning more and more into cash grabs with limited production releases and now he has started pointless flankers. This is all alongside the fact he’s bumping prices higher and higher.

Anyone try Aesop fragrances? I use their deodorant but would like to get a fragrance too.

Lowkey better iris than PLH, but DH is still better. It's on the cleaner side, more office-safe.

i actually really enjoy the Aesop DNA. they're typically green, woody, earthy type of fragrances, but they're also a little muted and don't perform that long, except maybe their Marakkesh one. i think they're fine as long as you either don't mind reapplying or switching it up during the day.
as much as like the smell, they're not necessarily what i would go for in terms of wearing. on the other hand, i own two of their room sprays. i think that their DNA is better suited for it in my opinion

DHS2021 is lemony aldehydes over pure incense and amber, it’s not as heavy as that sounds but it’s not a “sport” fragrance or even a citrusy “freshie” in any way really
Still a nice frag, personally I prefer the profile of DH2020
Also sport lasts probably a few hours longer than og if you care about that

trad musks are dirty, even gross. it's only with advent of synthetic musks that they've become associated with the smell of cleaning products.

very unique leather/incense smell. have tried a bunch of incense frags (eau sacree, avignon, cdg 2, 2 man, zagorsk, l'orpheline), but Rien doesn't seem to smell remotely like any of them. It gave me hints of gasoline.
>>
>>18543303
It smells like leather and a tiny bit of incense doused in diesel oil and then set on fire.
Bone dry, smokey, leathery and quite strong overall.
Rien II is the same thing with less leather and much more incense.

NTA but I also got the urge to try some serge lutens fragrances last week. ended up blind buying 100ml of Poivre Noir and 50ml of L'orpheline from fragrancenet since they sound fairly safe are were very cheap (paid $115 thanks to -$25 from their points and -$25 with an amex offer).

I also want to try Vetiver Oriental, Iris Silver Mist, and Gris Clair. Only option for buying those is the 75ml bell jar for $325 which is too much to blind buy so I'll have to find a way to sample these first.
>>
>>18543569
Yes. There are a lot of good designers out there and you can often get a sort of middle of the road experience by finding underappreciated discontinued designers. Stuff like Body Kouros or DH2011 or M7 is like $100-150 and smells really unique. Serge Lutens also is pretty affordable.

Nta but I've tried it. It's slightly floral and sweet with a touch of blackcurrant and a heap of incense. Not overbearing like an amouage would be. It's very light, bordering on feminine, but quite good. I wore it for Easter and i found it very fitting

I also got a bottle of Frederic Malle's Dans Tes Bras. It's a very cozy powdery floral with notes that are often used in fabric softener which some people don't enjoy. Something that is unique to it (relative to fabric softener) is a sweet creamy scent behind the heart notes. It doesn't last until the base notes but it's quite present. Not a big fan of sweet scents but it's a bit behind the main notes, not up front. The heliotrope reminds me Gucci Eau de Parfum but where the Gucci goes more into spices, the Malle goes into fresh and clean. While both feminine, Dans Tes Bras goes more masculine because of its simplicity and modern profile. It lasts a decent amount and project well for a couple hours before settling down. Maybe it might go well sprayed on clean clothes, will test.

>>18543436 is a more accurate description of musks.

I’ve brought this up on several occasions, “musk” is an umbrella term for a huge group of molecules that can smell like polar opposites, but they’re all lumped together because of their chemical structure.

Originally musks came from animal secretions and *when used in small doses* helped promote floral notes and extend longevity to fragrances. Larger doses smell like shit, as you said.

It’s the modern synthetic musks that smell clean, powdery, or soapy.
>>
>>18543700
musk that was competently removed from the musk gland absolutely smells clean. if it smells dirty, it's an inferior product.

Finally, I got a bottle of the popular Malle Portrait of a Lady. Many people know it but for me it starts sweet and fruity but not juicy fruit, a "dark" fruit, almost tart. The rose is listed on some sites at the top but it's part of the entire composition. The combo of rose, frankincense, and patchouli is what gives the fragrance its distinctive profile but to me it's quite similar to Tauer's Incense Rose. They don't smell the same because the Tauer leans dryer and patchier with the castoreum giving it some strangeness. The Malle backs up the combo with more sharpness and palpability through added sweetness and fruitiness. The Tauer is wild and cryptic, the Malle is elegant and assertive. They are both scents originally marketed as feminine that became more popular with men than women, likely due to their intensity. Portrait of a Lady is well known for its performance, I don't need to say anything other than it doesn't leave anyone wanting. It's almost too much for me, I like my scents to move on and give me a break. Incense Rose is more my speed but I missed out on getting it before the tariffs so I'll have to settle for Portrait of Lady when I need to get my fix.

I’m sorry to disappoint you seeing as you most likely hold this fragrance in high regard, but the “freshie with some twists” moniker is unusually fitting when it comes to acqua di sale. It is not a particularly complex fragrance, having a very common marine accord consisting of Calone, canthoxal, helional, linalyl acetate seaweed absolute and some other materials. Besides the aforementioned seaweed absolute, it shares many similarities with other fragrances in this niche. It shares 19 aromachemicals with Acqua di Gio, a fragrance I consider synonymous with the words “Acquatic freshie”. Despite not really straying off the beaten path I think it’s nonetheless a pleasant fragrance.

Check the OP flowchart for sandalwoods. Santal 33 is already positioned as a top end luxury fragrance so “upgrading” in that sense may be difficult. You could look into some of the high end natural perfumeries like Ensar Oud or Bortnikoff (dubious if they are truly high end but anyway) to see if theres anything using real mysore sandalwood extracts. I think Bortnikoff Dream uses real mysore. What about Santal 33 do you like and what part of it do you feel could be improved?
