A blazer is more casual than a suit jacket and unlike a suit jacket is made as a standalone garment. Blazers also come in a wider variety of patterns and fabrics and often have contrasting buttons unlike suit jackets. You can get away with wearing a suit jacket with mismatched pants in a pinch but ideally you only ever wear a suit jacket with its matching bottoms. If you want to mix and match jacket and pants, you ideally want a blazer or sport jacket, not a suit jacket. If you are intending to wear a full matching suit, you need a suit jacket and its matching pants.
FYI sport coats and blazers are essentially the same thing. Traditionally, blazers were just sport coats that were specifically Navy with brass buttons but now they come in all kinds of styles and the terms are practically interchangeable.
A navy blazer is generally recommended because that color isn't picky with pants or shirts. Grey is also good but less versatile. Texture is up to you but avoid anything too smooth. It'll just look like an orphaned suit jacket. Most important thing is that the shoulders fit. You will almost certainly need a tailor to get the sleeves right.
