I thrifted a pair of new Vintage Levi's 501 repro for 30 bucks. It's neppy raw denim, incredibly nice. Also very hefty. They're not selvedge though, which surprised me (aren't they supposed to be?). These jeans left me wondering why people are so dumb as to spend hundreds on Japanese repro cuts when: 1) these Levi's are EXACTLY the SAME, 2) they are the original thing instead of a copy, and 3) they fit absolutely PERFECT without all the sloppiness and sagginess that come from the incurable sartorial inability of the Japs.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion, I should have mentioned that in the first point I was referring to the fabric, not to the fit. I wouldn't say "they are exactly the same" if I hadn't tried Japanese jeans.

Funnily enough, the only pair I've kept and that I love is the Oni, which is notoriously slouchy and weird-fitting. I kept it for that reason. If I want to dress down and wear some oversize sweater and untucked shirt over a sagging jean, that is perfect.

its pretty typical for the sleeves of mackinaw jackets. not as common for flannels but not unheard of even for pretty old vintage stuff. when used in the lining its typically at high abrasion points and it sort of implies that its a piece meant to be layered not worn directly on skin. if you want to stop what you're wearing underneath from pilling or the sleeve lining to catch on your loose knit wool sweater (aforementioned jacket sleeve example) polyester sort of is the best material for the job. silk tears and other materials have too much friction.

you could wear them either way. not all of them have the lining. it most likely got put there because people bitch about wool being itchy on their neck but i'm just guessing.
there's a bunch of other brands you can get vintage flannels with that sort of look, some more famous than others, including choices that use pendleton wool.

theres also a lot of less famous mills that used to operate or some even still do like johnson woolen mills and such. you can find a lot of mackinaw jackets that are basically the same as vintage filson for like fiddy to a hundred bucks if you know where to look.

So how does raw denim sizing work? Do you just luck out in how much it shrinks?

sanforized denim shrinks about 1-2% in every dimension = go tts
unsanforized denim shrinks 5-10% if cold washed, hang dried = size up 1-2
unsanforized 1 wash denim tends to have almost all of the shrinkage taken out of it but it varies with each brand's 1 wash process. = go tts
most of us go with unsanforized 1 wash when given the choice. no sizing headaches, no downsides.
