I thrifted a pair of new Vintage Levi's 501 repro for 30 bucks. It's neppy raw denim, incredibly nice. Also very hefty. They're not selvedge though, which surprised me (aren't they supposed to be?). These jeans left me wondering why people are so dumb as to spend hundreds on Japanese repro cuts when: 1) these Levi's are EXACTLY the SAME, 2) they are the original thing instead of a copy, and 3) they fit absolutely PERFECT without all the sloppiness and sagginess that come from the incurable sartorial inability of the Japs.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion, I should have mentioned that in the first point I was referring to the fabric, not to the fit. I wouldn't say "they are exactly the same" if I hadn't tried Japanese jeans.

Funnily enough, the only pair I've kept and that I love is the Oni, which is notoriously slouchy and weird-fitting. I kept it for that reason. If I want to dress down and wear some oversize sweater and untucked shirt over a sagging jean, that is perfect.

its pretty typical for the sleeves of mackinaw jackets. not as common for flannels but not unheard of even for pretty old vintage stuff. when used in the lining its typically at high abrasion points and it sort of implies that its a piece meant to be layered not worn directly on skin. if you want to stop what you're wearing underneath from pilling or the sleeve lining to catch on your loose knit wool sweater (aforementioned jacket sleeve example) polyester sort of is the best material for the job. silk tears and other materials have too much friction.

I got the Bronson Lot 47801XX.
Immediately threw them in a hot wash cycle and they shrank down to the post wash measurements on the site.
Fit is pretty great, rise is just where i want it, construction is not flawless but it's pretty damn good. Ive had less precise stitching on pure blue japan jeans.
Inseam is so damn short, don't even bother with Bronson jeans if you are taller then 5'9".
For whatever reason this particular batch of Lot 47801XX have a red tab in the back pocket but it's then almost completely covered up with red stitching. Never seen something like this before and i have no idea if it's referencing some historical detail or trying to get around Levis trademark infringement.
Overall pretty happy with them for the $86 i paid.

Yes, like others have said selvedge jeans tend to have one inseam length, so it's easier and more aesthetic to simply cuff them up. Also for jeans like using unsanforized, often they'll shrink more and more with each wash, over time. If you hem them or get your regular length, often times they'll shrink into high-waters by the time they're toast.

Based on how they look and the size charts, Bravestar's cuts are probably too slim. The 13mwz is very forgiving of a cut. For USA made jeans, Left Field Smokestacks are a superior cut, extremely well balanced and relatively similar proportions as the 13mwz but with slightly less taper. You can get away with buying a heavy weight jacket, but heavier weight jeans in a relatively slim cut is just not the move

Recently tried in N&F strong guys in store. Leg opening was as wide as you'd think but the top and thighs where crazy tight. Not too tight to wear, especially considering they're only going to get softer over time, but it was hard to tell how they would really look on me because of how much the stiffness affected the drape. Anyone else have much experience with strong guys?

I also tried out some fullcount, the 105 was too loose at the top, no big surprise, but the 1101 fit very well, they felt roomy, but you couldn't tell by looking at them. No saggy ass type stuff. The problem is I'm looking for a wider fitting pair. The 105 weren't ridiculous, just a little bigger than the 1101, could a tailor make the top a bit tighter?

Yeah, clearly. I guess I was just surprised at the degree to which it lived up to stereotypes. I spent years in LA and as much as that place sucks it also isn't really what its reputation would make you expect. Portland on the other hand exceeds its image in a way I found pretty shocking, my first time ever going there was to pick up some IKEA furniture when I first moved up here and that store alone was unbelievable, it was like going to a reddit mod convention. Been wearing the Freewheelers 1951 as of recent. I typically prefer wide/relaxed cuts for the added comfort, but these are definitely my favorite slimmer/fitted 501 cut. a) the tension settings on the union special machine have to be dialed in and there's a skill curve to putting the hem on the jeans with even tension. even with the exact same machine two different places will give you two totally different hems. tcb uses the same machine as my local guy but gets way better roping because their machine is so dialed in.
b) there's other factors at play than just the chainstitch such as the yarn twist, weave tightness, what temp you wash the jeans on and if you tumble dry, if they're sanforized or unsanforized etc.
i have a pair of rustlers somewhere that have a lock stitch hem but insane roping bc i machine washed & tumble dried them a lot, and i have a bunch of union special chain stitched jeans with zero roping to speak of.
but you are more likely to get strong roping from a union special assuming its dialed in.
the lock stitch is also more durable than a chain stitch, and sometimes the look can be desirable. i think it gets a bad rap but if you don't cuff your jeans its arguably better than a chainstitch. i don't mind when my jeans have one but if i'm paying to have something hemmed i usually opt for the chainstitch anyways.
