I have a specific problem. I like the lavender in Libre, but it's obviously a feminine fragrance. I used to wear it as sample only, Do I just buy the bottle if I really like it? please recommend me good masculine lavender perfumes that aren't straight out aromatic fougeres.

Ambroxan, rose oxide, Calone, Cis 3 hexenol, Cyclamen aldehyde, Undecavertol, floralozone, helional, Eucalyptol, allyl amyl glycolate, seaweed absolute, Evernyl, oakmoss Givco and norlimbanol. This is the most “bare bones” accord I can come up with although I’d suggest using some citrus type modifiers like Dihydromyrcenol, aldehyde c10 etc…

>>
>>18580575
That’s a lot of materials, but what kind of percentages are we talking about here? I’m not asking exact numbers, but like if it were that singular accord in a bottle, is it 50% ambrox, I can’t imagine it’s everything in equal measure, especially with such contrasting materials like Rose Oxide and Seaweed Absolute.

To me violet is a very tragic note seeing as methyl heptine carbonate, prominently featuring in Dior Fahrenheit and to a lesser extent the original 1980s version of green Irish tweed. It and methyl octine carbonate have been prohibited for use in category 4 fragrances. It was the backbone behind many of the more potent masculine fragrances of the 1980/90s. To create a violet accord that is non IFRA compliant (and to my nose far more beautiful) you need the Ionones, chiefly Alfa, beta and Dihydro beta Ionone (the latter of which has a wonderful woody note also found in my favorite oud base) and violiff by IFF, for the green fresh backbone you can use trace amounts of methyl octine carbonate and undecavertol paired with leaf alcohol (cis 3 hexenol) When I re-create the aroma of a flower I tend to also include the stem and leaves instead of just focusing on one part. Again, this is the most basic accord I can think of, I tend to discuss the most simple to create accords on here in hopes that one day a young budding perfumer will read and recreate them, this is also why I hardly ever discuss captives. I’d like you guys to start perfuming.
>>
Regarding Iris I have to say that it can be taken many ways. The most famous of all irises is probably the iris pallida, produced in the Florentine hills under the name “giaggiolo”. to re-create this particular Iris note, which in my view is the most beautiful among all varieties, you will need Isoraldeine 95, Ionone alpha and beta, hexyl cinnamaldehyde, Verdox (prominent apple note in oajan, Ambre narghile and apple brandy) and Ionone type ketones, in a lower dose Lyral, Cyclosal, Florosa, Lilial and other muguet type materials can also help the flower to “bloom” although nowadays you mostly use Florol for that, see zarokian for amouage and her smart dosing of Florol in her attars. You also need the irones, chiefly among which Irone Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Methyl Ionone Alpha Iso/Methyl Ionone Gamma. Givaudan makes a wonderful orris base I also use on occasion when I don’t want to create a specific iris accord. There are a few woody floral modifiers that can also be introduced to round the entire accord, although that mostly depends on what you’d like the base notes to be, to smooth the transition between evaporation curves
>>18580577
Honey is a very interesting note to me that has gained much prominence these last few years heavily featuring in some of guerlains offerings. Honey is one of these materials that you can take in a lot of different directions seeing as it’s volatile aroma compounds and chemical makeup differ from beehive to beehive, depending on what flowers were used to make the honey. There are a few key components that exist in every honey accord tho, those being Azarbre and Phenylacetic acid (also used to make crystal meth). According to Jean Claude Ellenas diary of a nose, these are the only aroma chemicals needed to convincingly re-create a Honey Accord, and despite my approach to Perfumery being very different to his I would agree.

Most of the materials I mentioned are going to be dosed between 1 and 0.001% given their extraordinary tenacity and longevity. In Profvmum romas acqua di sale, the seaweed absolute is dosed at 0.004% for example, just to give you an idea how potent some aromachemicals can be. I think the dosage needs to be determined by the Perfumer himself, there are a couple of guidelines that can help but keeping a future perfumer in mind, I’d like to not spoil too much so they can experiment themselves and find the right ratios.
>>18580609
In my experience, the sudoriferous aromas exhibited by men and women differ greatly. I don’t know what Nathalie hershlags armpits or feet smell like so I can only give you a general guideline on how to recreate female body odors. The most feminine musk of all is Velvione, you can take this a clean floral direction using ethyl Linalool, Florosa etc. if you’d like to take it an animalic direction like used gym socks you can use the famous animalis base (6% in the original kouros) and cumin, cuminaldehyde, civettone and certain fatty acids, isovaleric and butyric acids, you can also use certain thiazoles or Mercaptans. Since you still want it to lean feminine also use floral fruity musks like Ambrettolide.

Black people actually wear fragrance unlike most other groups so you get a lot of variety except black women who wear BR540 clones like every other women. In the city you can walk by maybe one white person wearing fragrance, but if you're in a black area every other black person is wearing fragrance. Not to mention black people overspray so you're more likely to smell them.

Frankincense is a relatively difficult now to have by itself without any supporting molecules, but you can definitely create something very long, lasting. When creating an incense fragrance you must first select what variety you want. The most prized species is Boswellia sacra, particularly from Oman and Yemen, (which prominently feature in amouages compositions like incense rori or jubilation XXV) there are also Boswellia carterii and Boswellia serrata which offer slightly different olfactory profiles: bright citrus topnotes versus earthy and balsamic heartnotes. To create a long lasting frankincense accord, the choice of extraction method is the most important. A CO2 extract or resinoid is preferred over essential oil because these capture the heavier, sesquiterpene-rich fractions (the molecules responsible for tenacity) while limiting the quick-fading monoterpene topnotes (like limonene and alpha-pinene), although on that note many incense varieties mostly have alpha and beta pinene in the top. You can use some supporting aroma chemicals like the aforementioned pinenes and certain aldehydes to make the incense shine, for instance aldehyde c12 MNA works wonderfully in conjunction with incense. On that note most “incense” accords are nearly always identical to each other using certain aromachemicals like Vertofix etc. there are also a few famous incense bases, like bois d’encens which also features in interlude. The basic incense accord you find in most of CDGs offerings of the incense series is made up of iso e super, Vertofix, cedramber, aldehyde 12mna and olibanum with some supporting Virginia cedarwood.
>>
>>18580677
If you’d like to create a mango accord you’ll need juicy esters, lactones, and trace sulfur molecules. Since there’s no true mango essential oil (the fruit simply doesn’t yield one through distillation or extraction) you have to construct the impression from synthetics and naturals that mimic its sweet, creamy, slightly green complexity. The first step is to decide what type of mango you want: an unripe, green one with tart and leafy nuances, (in this case you can use cassis base 345F) or a ripe, golden mango with a sweet nectar like depth. (345B) For the core of the accord gamma undecalactone or gamma nonalactone gives the creamy pulpy fruit tone, while ethyl butyrate and ethyl maltol bring the juicy brightness and round sweetness typical of tropical fruits. You can add low dosed cis 3 hexenol or cis 3 hexenyl acetate (both feature in Xerjoff Erba pura) to reproduce that green fresh peel effect which keeps the whole structure from collapsing into syrup. To push it toward the tropical, allyl caproate or allyl heptanoate can be used in traces as they add that characteristic sharp pineapple-passionfruit tang which really gives lift and sunlight to the accord. To truly capture mango you’ll need faint sulfuric undertones; in nature 3 mercaptohexyl acetate is largely responsible for the juicy and slightly animalic edge. For amateur perfumers that is hard to source, so you can substitute it with a bit of blackcurrant bud absolute or grapefruit mercaptan (extremely diluted) recreates that nuance perfectly, lending lifelike ripeness without veering unpleasant. Jean Claude Ellena discusses mango in diary of a nose, mentioning how you can mix aldehyde c14 with blackcurrant buds absolute for a very convincing accord, although he also utilizes some naturals like carrot EO. (Fructalate and such can also help for the pulpy part.)
>>
>>18580834
Hedione features in close to every commercial fragrance, seeing as it is one of the primary building blocks of the modified Grojsman accord that has been dominating the fragrance industry for more than a decade now. Structurally speaking, close to every fragrance is made up of Iso e super, Galaxolide and hedione. It does feature in some jasmine accords but it is primarily used as a structural building block to give airy texture and nondescript floral lift, there are a few hedione adjacent captives that do this job even better, but they can only be used by a select group of brands. Alternatively there’s hedione HC.
>>18581030
Truthfully speaking, it’s a very common Iris accord you will find in a plethora of female fragrances. I speculate that you have not encountered it more frequently only because you mostly smell men’s fragrances.

Had this for a long time on my radar, almost forgot about it
How strong is the Coke smell, and is it more like opening a coke bottle or the smell/taste that coke candy has?
>>
>Versace Eau Fraiche

Am I the only one that thinks this is criminally underrated?
>>
>>18581348
I don't know if anyone can accurately answer this. I personally feel like there's some fizziness along with cinnamon which is what makes you think of cola - I think this sense of fizziness make it more like a soft drink at least to me.
The rest of the scent is a bit of vanilla and quite a bit of tobacco, but it all blends so nicely. The fizziness goes away after a while, but the rest of the scent is still very very very pleasant after 5 days+ on sprayed clothes.
I really can't believe this is so underhyped and it makes me suspicious about how things get hyped because mid things end up being pushed by the algos and the influencers at the same time while gems like this just aren't mentioned at all.
>>
>>18581360
Ah Sounds nice to me, i was just wondering if it has this synthetic sweet candy cola smell, but it seems not like it, which is good, have to give it a try its just 30 bucks here
>>
>>18581348
>>18581360
In my limited experience all cola accords are made with a combination of black cherry, cinnamon, usually lime, I think ginger, maybe a few other things (or whatever materials they use to artificially recreate the above notes). I would say it’s more the scent of a freshly cracked can, because it does seem like the “fizzy” feeling the scent gives is a portion of creating the scent as a whole.

PerfumAnon can speak to it better than I.

>I’d like you guys to start perfuming.
What does one major in while in college to start down this career path? Chemistry with a focus on Organic Chem? Or is it better to focus on Analytical so you have a better understanding of GCMS etc. Or would it possibly be even better to major in Food Science?
>>
>>18581370
Licorice and star anise also has cola vibes, based from my experience
>>
>>18581373
You can get in as long as it’s a chemical field, obviously things like organic or analytical chemistry are going to be held in a higher regard. I can only speak on isipca but I know that a few fragrance schools in grasse also take you if you have a masters or bachelors in a non chemistry related field, for instance, I personally know someone who despite having a masters in architecture became a perfumer. Pierre negrin never formally studied either, instead learning in laboratories around the world. It’s a difficult world to get into, but once you have your foot in the door you definitely have a lot of opportunities.
>>
>>18581370
You’re absolutely right having mentioned most of the primary constitutents of a cola accord. Ellena states cola to consist of vanillin, cinnamon, orange and lime. These are the Core naturals but a cola accord can be taken many ways, for instance, by adding fructone and benzaldehyde you can take it a cherry direction while isobutavan and various Lactones lean crème soda
>>
>>18581385
Lol I'm currently taking bachelor's in architecture but I'm probably just gonna be a small time perfumer for soaps, it's my niche interest.

Guys recommend me a nice fall/winter perfume that's for men/unisex. I can't figure out what I want to try from the charts and trying out in the shops is a pain in the ass and the selection isn't nearly as plentiful and sometimes more expensive than online.

I am just tired of always going for the safe choice which is usually Burberry London. It's done and gone. Might wear it again in a decade or so.

You're misunderstanding something. It's okay for men to smell like anything, because it's not how you smell that makes you masculine.

Oxidized tea, like phoenix oolong or rock tea, the stage at which it doesn't smell grassy anymore but also doesn't smell malty and strongly nutty yet.
The tea accord in Winter Palace is nice but too citrusy and not nearly tannic/dry/acidic for black tea, and that in Wulong Cha X (haven't tried the regular one sadly) is too light and grassy even for a light oolong.

Doesn't gamma-undecalactone smell distinctly peachy?
If so, won't using it make the accord smell more like generic ripe juicy fruit than specifically mango?

Is Ambre Nuit a big dose of hedione, labdanum, benzoin, a bit of vanilla, a bit of musk ambrette and damascone delta and some such for contour, and a bit of rose absolute?

The rose accord in Ambre Nuit is made up of Bulgarian Rose Otto, PEA, Citronellol, Geraniol, Nerol, Rhodinol 70, Neryl Acetate, Phenethyl Phenyl Acetate and that one damascenone from firmenich. There are a few ambery materials such as Benzoin Oliffac, Cistus Oil and Ethyl Vanillin, the rest are clean musks and some sandalwood molecules.

You can’t pirate bois d’ encense, most bases are proprietary secrets and even then, it’s a codestillation. How would you even go about that, unless you have chromatography equipment

Despite being lactonic in character, Gamma undecalactone is needed for a great deal of fruit accords, for instance the Prunella base, which also features c18 etc… you can find it in nearly every fruit accord, sometimes as a modifier but mostly as a primary structural component coupled with a handful of butyrates. Fruits are a very difficult aroma to produce so a lot of molecules are needed to make it smell “realistic”, although sometimes only a few molecules are needed to create the base structure.

To create a black tea accord like you describe, you need Phenethyl Alcohol,
Ionone Beta, Mate Absolute and Theaspirane (which is one of the main players) paired with guaiacwood and guaiyl acetate, Patchouli Heart or at least a relatively clean patchouli, Cistus and ethyl Linalool and a few hesperidic modifiers. Bergamote 000136 for instance, with a touch of Citral. By keeping the citrus and smokier guaiac compounds in the lower percentages you should capture what the volatile aroma compounds resemble at that stage. What I mentioned is a relatively simple accord that you should be able to put together yourself.

Pineward released some samples back in June that all had (to my nose) a base that hit this scent spot-fucking-on, as well as an older sample fragrance that also smelled like a similar base called Lorrow. Unfortunately none of them have actually been released as full fragrances as of yet.

It’s the kind of scent where I don’t know that I’d want a full bottle, but like 10-15 ml would be perfect for rare occasions.

That's just it. Projection is poor after dry down but right when you put it on it's overwhelming as fuck. Longevity is okay, but not great for what the bottles cost. Performs how a good $20~ fragrance performs. Maybe 6-8 hours with 6 sprays.

Tested this since the YSL near me has yet to restock their male fragrances

Black Opium - smells like what I expected. Sweet, warm coffee with tons of vanilla in background. Has this signature YSL screechy accord that can be smelled in MYSLF. Projects like a beast. Leans feminine but the overall vibe is like Azzaro Wanted line.

Black Opium Le Parfum - more refined, mature version of the original. It's much more deeper, not screechy and smells more like a chocolate than coffee. This one's more unisex in my opinion. Also the mid-drydown smells a lot like MFK Grand Soir. it has that old syrupy amber vibe going on.
