/fa/ pls help me style this vintage trench coat I inherited from my grandfather. I took it out to an orchestra like this, but I think I screwed up wearing grey jeans underneath and should have done some form of dress pants.

I don't have very much formal clothes that aren't straight up business professional, so I could really use opinions on hats, shoes, and pants appropriate for different levels of formality.

I am tall, white, and successful with women so yes I am actually asking for advice and not just gonna wear a fedora and look like a total redditor, but also not afraid of a bold look, to match the jacket.

You're none of those things if you have to ask /fa/ for help to "style" a basic trench.

None of these things include being remotely competent at fashion. I don’t know what I’m doing because I’ve always just kept outfits as simple as possible. I come from a background/hometown where people just don’t dress up like this. I just didn’t want 20+ posts about height doomerism or race and wanted actual advice.

Thanks for bumping the thread but I’m not sure how being knowledgeable about fashion would determine someone’s race or height.

It sounds like you don’t know what to wear with a trench.

Jeets typically don't know how to dress themselves.
>>

True enough. Now give me advice and assume I’m a short ugly jeet if you please.

you sound 12

wear a contrasting shirt
for hats idk but not something super dark or youll look like a dork since the coat is already pretty muted
actually if you got blonde/light brown hair you dont need the hat at all
>shoes
just wear whatever mane it's a trench coat you can't fuck it up
>pants
sweats for informal, jeans for casual, suit pants for formal. that's it
>>

Alright thanks. Idk about sweat pants, but I did suit pants and a softer/thicker fabric button-up shirt untucked with doc martens dress shoes today.

I’ll try it some other time with a hard contrasting colored shirt and blue jeans/brown dress boots at some point to try that more colorful casual look.

Hair is light brown/very dirty blonde (depending on dryness). Although I think it looks fine that way I thought maybe I could get 2 hats, one a step down in formality and one leaning even more into the unusualness of the look.

This might be a retarded question but does the black shirt “contrast” the grey of the jacket or do you mean going as far as having something like a red shirt?

So for hats, at most as dark as the coat, preferably lighter, makes it look more like I’m seriously wearing the thing instead of just matrix or columbine larping?

are you intentionally giving this dork bad advice or are you a fashion horrorshow yourself? Sweatpants with a trench coat? holy fuck some of you need to be shot in the head.
>>
>>18593366
Yes that sounded like bad advice, I'm just trying to be nice.

Maybe you should give some advice? Even if it's just not to wear the thing at all.

What did I say to make you so angry

>assume I’m a short ugly jeet if you please.
I already did, and no amount of advice will help you here.

I wear my trench over proper clothes when it's raining. Its like my rain jacket. Or when it's fall-ish cool weather. Slacks, button up shirt, maybe a sweater or a sports coat/blazer, and a scarf. It's not hard. If I'm going casual I don't wear the trench, I'd wear a leather jacket like a rancher coat or a bomber. If I'm going formal I don't wear it, I wear an overcoat.
>>
>>18593904
Yeah I also inherited an overcoat but it’s tweed.
>>
>>18594032
based, tweed overcoats are based.

Your complaints seem to boil down to you are not confident in yourself. Just wear the clothes bro.
>>
>>18594132
They are just very far removed from anything I've worn before style-wise.

Trenchcoats are hard to pull off. They're a meme with fedoras too, but you probably already know that. Overcoats are simple and timeless, but trenchcoats tend to be big, bulky, and dated. Simple rule is don't skip layers. It looks weird if you don't have a jacket or sweater over your shirt. Pants better be straight, skinnies make you look like a twig. Footwear is gonna stand out, so something decent. Personally I'd only do boots or something leather, I think sneakers would clash. If you dress too casually under a trenchcoat, you look like a serial rapist/murderer. If you're too formal, you look overdressed. Find whatever makes you feel good in between but remember the trenchcoat is functional, it was designed to keep your nice clothes dry when most people walked.

Alternatively, you ignore all rules and make your own style. Either it goes well or it goes horrible.

>Either it goes well or it goes horrible.
Lmao true.

I basically went business casual with it and it felt alright but even a little overkill for that so I might literally just reserve it for suit-and-tie occasions. It I really have a need maybe just a big overcoat to wear with suits.

Definitely not gonna be wearing it with a fedora around the mall like a retard. I was thinking more that I need advice on ways to make it work more broadly than just strictly formal suit and tie overcoat stuff. This is helpful advice.

Wore the tweed out. Way more versatile since I don’t have to dress nearly as formal and the color fits jeans. I look sick.
