i owned that exact jacket 3 years ago and came to the conclusion that it was cringe. they had their day in 2010-2014 when slim silhouettes were trendy
>>
>>18610556
how did it age and break in?
>>
looks dumb as fuck, probably the worst looking leather jacket style you could buy
>>
>>18610559
why though?
>>
>>18610552
I associate them with cheapness and flaking faux leather
>>
>>18610599
with the recent trend cycle, now leather jackets with collars are the ones made with 100% polyurethane
>>
>>18610557
just dont get anything made of horsehide and youll be good

lmao I also own this exact jacket. I fell for the meme after watching Stridewise's video on it
I always feel self conscious wearing it like I look like I'm trying too hard to look cool and hip
I might sell it or maybe just hold on to it but I want a jacket with a collar
>>
>>18610552
Millennial cringe. Unfortunately, all the cool leather jackets always happen to be motorcycle/aviation LARP.
>>
>>18610678
It can't be broken?

they are cringe if you're a fat fuck like leon
>>
>>18610678
I own a horsehide double rider
>>
>>18610817
No it can. Horsehide is just stiff as FUCK and takes a long time to break in and for what? It's not really any better than cowhide which is easier to break in
>>

yes and I will buy his jacket five times

What's a better alternative to not look like a boomer?
>>
Everything can be cool if you look the part, but some pieces are harder to pull off. You either need to be handsome and/or have the right physique, or at least look like you actually make use of the clothing in question. This can be said of every item, but it's hard specifically when it comes to leather jackets. Belstaff got David Beckham to be their face some time ago - he is conventionally handsome for most people, especially for his age. Then again Elon Musk was spotted wearing Belstaff jackets too on a number of occassions. Compare the two.
When you are a biker, or at least some sort of a gearhead, look like you collect extortion money, or are ready to break some doors and bones on a police drug bust, I bet nobody questions your jacket, and it can look cool. Leather is great when it comes to collecting patina and aging gracefully, but the idea is to wear it and have it look like it's actually used. Youtubers like stridewise with 50 jackets, 20 bags and various EDC things they never use are cringeworthy.

>Youtubers like stridewise with 50 jackets, 20 bags and various EDC things they never use are cringeworthy
The issue with everyone one of those reviewer channels is they always start out good. It's usually just them reviewing their personal stuff they've worn for years. But then the channel grows and then get free shit to review and they constantly need to make more content, and suddenly every video is something brand new that they've hardly worn
>>
The issue is most people that buy loads of stuff with some sort of original intended function mostly don't need that stuff in the first place. They want it mostly "to look cool in their mind", or at least to look like they have life and character. Too many items like these on a single person, with each and every one of them not showing any use, makes it a lame larp. Think of urban lumberjacks in the past, or Patagonia investment bros. Or wearing a Rolex dive watch at an office job.

Even Stridewise has some interviews with guys that are not influencers and simply autistically collect stuff - like having 50 leathers jackets. Guys collecting fashion-related stuff almost never look good and believable wearing the stuff they collect. Maybe because most people are simply unattractive by social media standards these days.
>>
>>18612220
Everyone Stridewise interviews is ugly so their collections don't matter
That Leatherjacketjawn guy has some cool vintage Schotts and stuff but he's ugly and a manlet, so you don't care about his collection anyway
The Almost Vintage Style guy has an insane collection of vintage stuff and some cool modern stuff, but he's a Mexican manlet.
Then he interviews old fat guys and you just don't care about what they own.
>>
>>18612223
And that's my point. Schott's Perfecto is one of the most popular leather jacket models ever created and still worn on the streets - how many guys have you seen that looked genuinely good, or at least believable wearing one?

These items stand out, especially when most people wear artificial-fiber, cheaper jackets these days, and it's getting way more harder to pull off a leather jacket look.

They only look good when you're wearing a motorcycle helmet
>>
>>18612729
this is only good context but most riders on the street don't wear leather as much anymore, it's heavy and doesn't breathe as well, most have switched to textile
>>
>>18612796
ironic because textile does some things good, some bad
leather does everything good
>>
Honestly depends on what you look like.

I owned a cafe racer and the only reason I sold it is becaus eit was made of the thickest, most unbreakable horsehide. That bitch was stiff.

However, it looked absolutely great on me. I think what's important when it comes to chosing the right leather jacket is to figure out which styles work for you. And that's pretty much how it is with anything you wear really.

Technically, you can argue that leather jackets in general are just not in right now. But do you really want to be another tiktok fag cosplaying with their workwear core or do that whole trend with the fucking tote bags?

Personally, I try and find quality pieces long term pieces that can be staples in my wardrobe. A g-1 jacket is one of the best things that looks good on me, that fur collar is a game changer whereas an a2 not so much. I own a burberry rain coat and i have to sell it cause frankly I can't pull it off. I thought id love to own one but no. Just dosen't work.

Try a couple of leather jackets out and see what works.

the name is really a misnomer and is a modern invention. this style jacket has nothing to do with the post WWII cafe racer scene that was happening in the UK.
only sometime in the 90s did brands start calling it a "cafe racer" jacket
loads of pictures from back in the day show a lot of schott perfectos and military flight jackets

according to legend, in post wwii britain servicemen missing the thrill of war started stripping down and hot rodding their motorcycles and racing. a big scene developed and they used to hang out at cafes challenging each other to races
legend has it they would put a song on the jukebox and try and complete races before the song finished. these bikes were hitting 100mph for the first time so it was especially dangerous
but yeah, the association with "cafe racer" jackets coming from the jackets worn during that time is a made up marketing story

if you're asking what kind of leather jacket to get dont get one. a leather jacket is the complement to an existing style, not the gateway to forming a style when you havent a clue to begin with

then you should browse widely at thrift stores and other places that have leather jackets. try a bunch of them on, and find one that seems to suit your preferred style of dress.

because, like - presumably - you arrived at this style as a result of experimentation, right? like, you didnt just pick it off a menu of options? like you didnt just have it advertised to you and decide to identify with it, right? you actually went through the painful, expensive, and time-consuming process of defining a personal style by picking and wearing a combination of basics and statements over years of bricolage, often in error but never in doubt in your unending quest for personal expression; and surely in the midst of all that you're just having a momentary lapse of concentration, leading you to doubt this sense of style when it comes to the leather jacket which, to be sure, can sometimes intimidate even the veteran fashionista? right?
>>
>>18614279
>>18614287
i mean, surely you're not appealing to strangers on the internet for a decision about something so personal, intimate, cultivated as Taste? right?

>What if I like the denim + workwear style?
I picked up a Levis light stonewash trucker jacket for $20; I think that would be worth trying before springing for a leather jacket.
People are a little intimidated when I wear that jacket for some reason. Like crossing the street when they see me coming, or giving longer looks like they're trying to sus me out. I probably look poor or like the bad guys from movies/tv
>>
>>18610552
leather jackets are gay

Keep your bottom up
>>
>>18614347
I really want a flight jacket but I never know how to size
>>
>>18614370
Measure your chest and then buy the size that matches your chest.
>>
>>18614377
Yeah but usually they're too baggy or too short
>>
>>18614370
>>18614964
I don't get this shit. Do Americlaps not have the option of buying clothing, trying it on, then returning it if it doesn't fit properly? Why am I constantly seeing people agonising over what size to buy on this board?
>>
>>18614990
It's a pain in the ass to do returns. It's not impossible or anything, it's just annoying
You have reach back out, wait for a response, they send a shipping label (or they don't), you have to box it up and take it to UPS or Fedex or whatever, pay shipping and then cross your fingers and wait. Then they get it and process the return or exchange, send a new one out, you wait another week or two and hold your breath that one fits better. If not? Rinse and repeat
I'd rather get it right the first time
>>
>>18614992
So go to a store
>>
Cool if you're hot, cringe if you're ugly.
>>
>>18614993
Now THIS is podracing!
Cockpit USA doesn't have stores unless you live in NYC
>>
>>18614992
I'm not the anon who said go to a store. I understand the US is massive. Why not order multiple of the same item and try them for size?
>>
>>18614995
So go to nyc and go to ellis island and broadway and comedy cellar and try shit on at other stores for fit while there like the filson store, self edge etc while you're there too. Then you'll know generally how shit like iron heart or samurai or flint and tender etc will fit you.
>>
>>18614999
Because he doesn't have the $4000 to float on it and probably can't really afford the $700 a2 he wants
>>
>>18615018
I'm sending a lot of projection with this post
Get a job, anon
>>
>>18615036
If you could afford it, you already would have just bought 4 sizes and goldilocksed it. But you're getting a budget brand a2 rather than the $1000 schott and you're concerned about trying it on in case they don't accept a return which means you're probably also considering their clearance options without returns.
>>
>>18615040
Cockpit is THE definitive A2 maker. They're not "budget" for being cheaper, they're made of goatskin which is the correct leather for an A2 which is a cheaper leather than cow/horse
>>
>>18615052
Ma'am they have a2s in goat, sheep, horse, and cow. Goat was budget to begin with because the government was cutting cost and supply was low
>>
>>18615054
There is absolutely nothing wrong with goatskin. This meme that it's somehow a worse leather is marketing nonsense by Big Cow
It is both softer than cow while being stronger. The only thing some people may not like is the prominent grain that cow doesn't have
>>
>>18615058
It isnt stronger. It's thinner and less durible. It can also stretch out but less so than sheepskin does. It's still good but it's not more durible than bovine. To be fair the oz weight matters more than the material on a jacket anyway. I wish companies would tell the oz of the leather itself since that matters more. Most of them seem to use the absolute thinnest 1-3oz leather because it's softer, cheaper, and much easier to sew with.
>>
>>18610552
It really depends. Nerds wear shit like this and look pathetic. Fat guys too. This applies to most clothes, of course, but if you're styled well otherwise, you can pull it off.

You can always tell when someone's leaning too hard on a jacket to look cool.
