I'm still going to get that one "brand name" starter watch for around $300. That's my new max budget.
But for now, as a palate cleanser after sending back ANOTHER Seiko 5, I've bought some more AliExpress shitters. As my taste evolves I'm trying new things. They're cheap enough to afford to.

Some are cheap and some are really fucking hilariously cheap. But I don't regret any of them.
Say what you want, keep telling me I'm "wasting" my money and need to drop over $1K on a single watch.
But I'm not there yet. And how will I ever get there if I don't keep trying new watches I like? You do it your way with your money, and I'll do it my way with mine.
This is fun to me. The browsing, the research, the discussion. Any watch I'm paying more than $25 for has gotten good reviews by people who aren't shills. Any watch I'm paying less than $10 for is just a goof. Who fucking cares? People pay more than $10 for LUNCH now.
Lunches don't last. We're learning that some of these shitters do.
I've only been here a couple of weeks but I really like the board. You can be a snob at me all you like. I can take it. In fact I find it amusing. For the rest of you, thanks for welcoming me with all of your valuable advise. I'd be NOWHERE without what I've learned here.

I just bought all of these in my image. The two in the middle are the cheapest hand-wound mechanicals that are supposedly well made.

As I've been doing in other threads, I'll post these as they arrive. I'll also post pics of my growing collection.
This thread won't probably last long enough for most of them, but in the meantime I'll keep asking for opinions and advice on the $200-$300 watch as well as posting those which I'm interested in.

I'm really liking this one. Kind of a weird price range. Bit of an investment for something I'm not ga-ga over.

I got the 36mm in the middle there knowing I hate the bracelet. It was $40 for one with leather so I figure I'll just switch it myself. I'm excited to start playing around with different straps.

So here's what I have so far. The white Timex was my dad's, the blue is my daily driver, the big Invicta was a mistake from 2020, kept as a reminder, and everything else I've acquired since consulting with this board.
There are at least a dozen more watches on the way, but probably more like 17 or so. I've lost track.
>>
>>18619245
The red and gold bling-shitter in the bottom corner was $3 and keeps great time. It looks so stupid but it proved to me that these Chinese watches actually do what they promise; they TELL TIME.

So it was with that in mind that I ordered the 9 watches under $10 at the top and another 4 or 5 last week that I'm sure was posted in one of the other threads.

And you pay no shipping once you're over $25 or so from Ali, so you can really go nuts. There was this thing where if you add two more items you save $4. I just kept on adding. So at the end of the day everything in my OP came in at around $100, and that includes shipping.
Pretty sweet I think. And there are two good watches there, so if the rest work at all I'm happy.
You never know, I could be buying $1k watches eventually. It all starts somewhere. By the end of this I'll be in around a thousand total but I'll have like ten great watches in there.
>>
>>18619231
Check out Boderry titaniums. You can get some around $150 if you like field military stuff they have good autos.
>>
>>18619266
Cool, thanks. Berny has full titanium for $50 too. I need to look at some. Lightweight I guess. Sounds cool too. I always thought titanium seemed like the coolest metal when I was 12.

Yes, these are tempting. Fuck, I need to slow down. Cheap shitters or that $300 Seiko/Citizen/Orient thing everyone says I need. I've already got another $150 Sea-Gull on the way. It's gorgeous and will satisfy my need for small seconds and a nice mechanical, but that price range adds up fast.
My Weekender seems like a field watch sort of. I do want that fabric striped band style though like the top right and bottom left of these Boderries.

Baltany, Boderry, Proxima.... there are so many of them that have such awesome fucking specs.

I keep coming back to this stuff because it's got far better guts than a Seiko 5. In fact, every single thing about it is superior. It's over $100 more than the Seiko 5 that Jomashop sent me all busted.

Such a tough call. And then some of you will say: "Then you may as well spent $350 and get a really nice San Martin".
And maybe I should. I will have more than enough pretty watches. I already have solid Timexes and other durable quartz "shitters".
That true craftsmanship is either over $1k for the fancy brands, or down around $300 in China.

I really love this obsession right now though. I love getting those small boxes in the mail and knowing it's a watch. And anticipating their arrival, not knowing which is coming when. I don't track my packages or follow emails once I've ordered.

Watch out (no pun intended) for those boderry though. They have everything going for them with the NH35 and sapphire and titanium and the 72 hour reserve is huge, but so is something else... the 50mm lug-to-lug. Dealbreaker for me. Otherwise it would maybe be perfect at $130.

Anyone considering pulling the trigger on a Timex Marlin, this here boasts sapphire crystal and the goddamn Miyota 9015 (with exhibition window!) on a 40.5mm stainless steel case.
at under $150 it's an improvement and a steal. Berny being a lesser known brand may actually make it cooler than a Timex for anyone seeing it. No one assumes a Timex is gonna have an automatic movement and you sure as fuck don't get to see theirs either.
I am putting this one on my wishlist for later.

I shook it a little and the seconds hand started turning. I'm so excited for this!
It's already outperforming the Seiko 5 which cost the exact same amount and is on its way back to Jomashop.

You know what? I'm done with them and I'm done looking for a Seiko/Citizen/Orient "/fa/ approved" junior starter watch.
Why the fuck do I need to go that route? It's been nothing but pains so far and I've seen like 50 experts including a few on this board explain how the same movements and better components are going into these "shitters".
What the fuck is the point of a brand watch if anything under $300 is going to blow chunks? LOL

I decided to order these two titaniums. The automatic Tandorio and the quartz Berny. I had four Bernies in my cart before narrowing it down. And I just couldn't find any I liked as much as green. And green is so far underrepresented in my collection.

So I'm covered on field watches and titanium now. And green.
I really can't think of anything else to get. Already so much on the way. I will need some sort of display case for all of them. I think I'll have about 30 watches total after all is said and done. Sure, only about ten of them will be worth keeping somewhere safe or displaying. Or maybe not. Maybe it'd be funny to put the $2 shitters in there right next to the $200 ones.
>>

Boderry makes the best titanium field with a titanium bracelet. You're also missing an aquatrident brass diver.
>>
>>18619732
Lug-to-lug on Boderry is ridiculous or I'd agree.
>>
>>18619742
The way it integrates it wears much smaller.
>>
>>18619732
Oof! Over $400. Big and bold. I've never liked divers of any kind. That's nice looking with the bezel design though. Rustic and turquoise. Heavy I'm sure.
>>
>>18619745
I saw one with a canvas type band, which is what I want in a field watch, and it looked all wrong. That's one of my main preferences in shape and style is that the circularity of the case isn't lost to some oyster type of base. I'd like if the lugs were gone entirely, or beneath or aside the case, not extending past the diameter. It's why my Weekender is my favorite; the lugs just barely register to the eye. I REALLY wanted the Boderry thing to work, you have no idea. It had everything I wanted and more and I was all set to pull the trigger on one until I noticed the fucking 50mm L2L.
If I need to wear a metal (even titanium) bracelet for the watch to not look bad on my wrist, it's the wrong field watch for me.
And were I more comfortable with modifications I'd consider getting one, grinding down the lugs, and drilling new lug holes. That's how much I wanted that watch with the 72 hour power reserve. I just don't have access to the kind of drill that could do that angle. It'd have to be some kind of specialty equipment I think.
>>
>>18619753
That's a lot to just say I'm a wristlet

We're only getting started. Though many of the watches on the way are incredibly cheap. I'm fascinated with the idea of a working $2.79 analog watch with bling diamonds and bright neon LEDs that light the entire thing up. Which is up in the OP image next to that grinder. And look at the one on the other side. $2.19 for a working chronograph that looks like that?? I must see and touch such a thing. Even if it doesn't work at all it will be an interesting paper weight. It's still an accessory. You can wear it on your ankle as a goof. I can put it around my dog's neck. I WILL put it around my dog's neck. lol
There are far worse, much more destructive ways to deal with a midlife crisis than blowing a measly grand on a wide variety of fun Chinese watches. But I can't keep having $300 days like yesterday. I really am done buying for a while. I still haven't really set up or test driven my mechanicals yet. And I haven't adjusted a single bracelet to fit me. There's not going to be any 'meh' about the mountain of shitters this is going to end up being. I can tell I'm not the same kind of watch enthusiast as everyone else seems to be. I'll move on to something else by February and you'll never see me here again.
My fragrance phase lasted less than a week.

>I'll move on to something else by February and you'll never see me here again.

San martins are often in that ballpark. Most people would say that proxima is in or around the same league as san martin. Although probably not with an elabore class movement like a 9015
>>
>>18619884
What fucking 'murph clone'? I don't know what 'murph' even means. If I only wear one watch from that collection it'll continue to be the Timex Weekender. I can't imagine having to adjust the fucking links of those bracelet watches myself. What a chore. I should have bought only watches with regular straps you can just wear. I have half a dozen watches that hang like sleeve of wizard on me. I'm supposed to get a bunch of tools and tinker around with metal chunks of watch?? Unbelievable.

That's pretty cool. What's the total cost and what kind of equipment do you need? If I'm going to have to size all these bracelets and be a fucking watchmaker now, I may as well build watches. I need a "loupe" and a table with adjustable lit magnifying glasses and shit? Tools galore. What the fuck am I getting myself into here?
>>
>>18620062
You need tweezers, a rubber ball, a magnifying glass, toothpicks with sticky putty, and a tool that pushes down on the hands. They're all like $1-4 per tool. Case was $12, hands were $5, movement was $24, strap was $8, dial was $12. Patience was mandatory. I also bought the lumed date wheel and had to take part of the movement apart to get that installed which needed tiny screwdrivers. I think the datewheel was like $8.

The problem I have with ali express is that cheaper watches on jomashop look objectively shittier than anything for comparable prices on ali express. Jesus christ! Yeah, that's the same as 100 different $50 shitters. I've yet to find a watch that I think looks like a thousand bucks, and that doesn't come close. I guess it looks a little like my Militado.

>>18620075
True. I really wanted to buy from Jomashop. I like their search parameters and they have some great deals. I didn't find another online retailer that even came close to the prices and selection. But yes, even then they are too high for what they are. And when the right Seiko actually shows up and one of the gears is dislodged and leaning against the back window, I finally got tired of trying with them. Maybe a used Seiko or Citizen is the way to go for me. But meanwhile, I'm loving these "shitters". And I'm really considering building a watch at some point like >>18620065 here did.

You're paying for the brand name and the movement. The powermatic/h10 is still only 3hz but the power reserve is double the nh35/36 at 80 hours. It has the word swiss on it and a brand name that isn't embarrassing. Militado does almost exclusively hamilton knockoffs. You would see better craftsmanship in the bracelet and polish as well but honestly a good chinese brand like san martin will be as good if not better than anything under like $4k for that. You just don't get the logo, swiss made, and depending on the model as good of a movement. You will see eta clones called pt5000s, sw-200 swiss movements, and miyota 9000s on chink watches in the $300-400 range which are 4hz movements. You will see seiko nh series in most of them as well as epson yns and miyota 8000s in cheap autos. They also have their own chinese brand called tianjin/seagull with their own movements with the interesting story of actually buying up a swiss company's tooling for their original chronograph mechanical movements. They can be good but generally fragile. The pt5000 is an eta clone and can be good but unreliable. In cheap quartz ones you usually get seiko vh movements which are very good but not as fun to mess with as they just work. The downside to many of the chronographs like the mechaquartz seiko and the seagull ones are a slave subdial that just shows the hour again which is fake and gay
>>
>>18620145
I didn't even notice any of that but I get it now. I guess Nomos is a real brand and that's a knockoff?
>>
>>18620147

>>
>>18620148
Nomos is the real brand, and seestern makes a good knockoff with a seagull movement. Honestly would have been a great buy last winter when they were $60 before trump ruined ali express.
>>
>>18620149
I've seen people on this board say Miyota 8210s are good. Lots of conflicting info. All this about hz is just confusing me. All these watches, I'm not really buying them for long-lasting accuracy or anything. Obviously knowing all this would be helpful if I were looking to invest in the perfect watch to last me ten years. But I'm just kind of buying anything that captivates me at the time as long as it's not total garbage. And I'm also admittedly buying total garbage on top of those. I'm more and more realizing this has nothing to do with the watches. None of my shopping sprees of anything have to do with the things I'm buying. I'm bored and looking for excitement while stuck in a situation where there is little. Plenty of money and time, but no excitement. I used to make excitement out of nothing when I had little money and time. Now that I have both I can't even buy excitement. I am realizing I will never be happy. The watches accumulate and I don't even wear them. I've yet to do more with my cool mechanicals than take them out of the box and take pics of them. They're all back in the boxes and put away. I have a corner of a room just piled with boxes of stuff I bought and haven't opened. A telescope, a shortwave radio, a HAM radio for broadcast, a laminator, an inkless thermal printer, an espresso machine, an infinity mirror, a projector, a handheld retro game player with 10,000 old games, a new laptop I don't need, an old GameCube.... and that's off the top of my head.
Any ONE of those things could be something I could open up and play with and learn about and spend a week getting to know. But I won't. I'll just keep buying and piling until something in my life changes enough to reset my brain and light a fire under my ass.
Do I feel better after confessing? No. Nothing makes me feel better. The world sucks, my world sucks, and half my life is over.
I'm aware it's all in my head and tomorrow I may feel the opposite. Things could always be worse.

You should buy a digital piano and then start learning it and music theory. You're buying stuff without actually struggling to do them. I'm like you except with trying to learn things. Buy a knitting kit or leather tooling kit or sewing machine. Something you actually have to git gud at. Just buying stuff is boring and that's why you're bored.

The 8000s don't hack and everyone complains about how grindy they are. It has to cost them like $10 more dollars for an nh and it's like why the fuck did they do this. They just want to be able to say """japanese movement"'' on it. 3hz is just less accurate than 4hz which in practical terms means you'll have to set your watch more often.

Is the rubber ball to screw open/closed the back of the case without some big drill press looking jeweler gadget?

The part of me that can still dream sees me specializing in really unique homemade dials somehow. Messing around with spray paint and textures, tiny little scenes utilizing tiny printing, all cobbled together behind the numbers and hands. Or no numbers. No rules. Etsy must be filled with people who make watches like that. But maybe I could join them. Sounds like it costs $50-$75 for the parts alone if you're not making a complete shitter. The time spent is where it becomes an unsustainable way to make money. You charge $200 for something that took days to produce. Of course it wouldn't be about the money. Art never is, and I'd be motivated by that. But all such motivations are dormant within me in the foreseeable future.

I could not have been prepared for just how thin and flimsy the band is. I doubt I'll ever wear this. $20 though, and it's supposedly a "must have" for all collectors.
Checked off the list at least.

Quebecois?
>>
What'll it be?
>>
Orient tourbillon.

Beautiful. It's already running too!
>>
I do not regret this $45.
>>
Everything looks good. Bracelet is high quality.

Something has to be shitty about it for that price. Doesn't add up.
>>
>>18621643
I'm going to show it to my jeweler to see what he thinks. I'll report back. I should have received more shitters by that time as well. People are more interested in the browsing and buying but when they actually get here everyone's already moved on and doesn't care. lol

I just ordered this for $110.
I don't think it's considered a "shitter".

What? No. I wound it. You can see everything through the back. It's an automatic. >>18621595
Are you telling me that's all for show and concealing a battery? That would be just as expensive to build.
I'll get to the bottom of it. It makes no sense that it would be a tourbillon and yet it seems to be. I'm getting it looked at.

If you're gonna buy chinese shitters at least look at aragon watches. He has a few tasteful designs. Pic/rel is not that. Wing actually suggested to use this 50mm watch as a desk clock
>>
>>18621731
Thats actually not bad.

I have bought a few of these shitter casios. the damn things are multiplying. They're so easy to wear though.
>>
>>18621749
Cool, I will.
I thought I was done buying watches but it's already another $200 day.

>>18621750
Yeah, I love my Weekender and want my collection to have a few Timexes in it. I know it's my size and I will have it tomorrow without waiting. And it's got a 5 year battery, which is nice to know.

>>18621752
It's growing on me. You can't beat $20 either.

I probably won't buy any more aragon watches but the few I have are pretty fun. I like some of those flashy designs. Some of them are obnoxious and gaudy. Its really great. Others are more toned down and ordinary looking dive watches that resemble seiko/etc..

I saw a video for a fake tourbillon running on quartz and the difference is that the crown doesn't control the hands, just winds the tourbillon. Mine isn't like that.
There doesn't seem to be a video covering my exact Orient. Maybe it's too new. I'm interested to find out what the jeweler says. He'll probably find it interesting. Old guy who doesn't use the internet much. Probably isn't aware of everything with these Chinese watches. But he'll know by looking at it what makes it tick.
Even if it were fake somehow, I don't care. $45 is worth it; it's a cool watch. I'm going to try out some different bands on it. I still haven't attempted to remove links on any of my bracelets. I'm going to learn from the jeweler.

I'm on their site. The 48mm American flag eagle watch is for sure gaudy.

I changed my mind and canceled it and then changed it again and ordered the silver. Pic related. $120 with shipping. I'm really excited for the jump-hour complication. The whole idea of just a minute hand and small seconds is really fucking cool too.
I love watches so much.

How the fuck am I going to store 40 watches? Granted, 15 or more will be too stupid to display. But at least 20 won't be embarrassing.
