Post watches in this watch thread.
Anything between $1 and $50000. Everyone is welcome even chinese watches. I love watches, you do too. Let's discuss and appreciate them.
This thread offers a forum to discuss and debate wristwatches, pocket watches, and clocks. Several members here are highly knowledgeable in specified areas of horology, so please contribute to the thread by asking questions and/or asking for advice if you are planning on purchasing a watch from an AD or the grey market. Please post pics of your watches here; it doesn't matter if it's worth 5$ or 50000$, because there might be someone who wishes to eventually purchase the same model that you own and would love to hear some real-world advice regarding ownership. The experience matters the most, not the price.

Still agonizing over the choice here. Don't want to buy a watch and have the enjoyment of it ruined over time by autistic nitpicky details I can't get over, and it would help to have someone with better taste and personal experience with the watches chime in...

Bro honestly. You've been told this before but you should really just quit 4chan for a while. There's clearly an underlying issue here, which is fine and, considering where we are, most of us are thick skinned. You can let off some steam here but you've been doing it for many months now if not years.
I'm not scolding you or anything, I'm in no position to do so. I just think a small pause would do you good. Find a new hobby or learn a new language in the meantime.
>>
>>18636546
Did they change the case shape? If yes, I'd get the old one but, the movement on the new one is just better. Got like 50% more power reserve or something like that

We've seen your watch at least a 1000 times but, I took the time to think about it in a more objective manner and my conclusion is that; people don't actually realise what they're seeing here.
It is an anomaly in the watch world. I won't say that it is the best value for money that you can get, because sadly this term has also been dragged through the ground and it has lost its meaning, and yet if you think about it, the fact that you can get this watch below 2000$ does not make sense.
First of all, you get the, possibly, most accurate autonomous watch on the planet, no GPS gimmicks, no radio controll no internet whatever, it's just you, in the woods, knowing the atomic time without big tech and or the government being able to track you. On top of that, you literally have a feature that is usually reserved for much, Much more expensive watches- the perpetual calendar.
Technicalities and specs aside, what do you get on the finishing part? It is as good as a grand seiko in terms of Hands and Marker finishing- Spotless, Sharp and no impurities or rough edges to be found. But what does GS-Level mean? Well it literally means that your Markers and Hands do have, on a macro level, better finished hands than 5 Digit Swiss Watches. It doesn't matter if this fact makes you angry or triggered or in doubt, but it is a Fact. The dial itself, the way they did the perception of depth, shouldn't work but it does and youc an even see the sunburst effect too.
Okay so what about exclusivity? Well what defines exclusivity?
>Low production
Check
>Locked behind the country of origin
Check
>Rare limited edition on top of said rarity to begin with
Check
So what about the case?Well it is not zaratsu but it still shouldn't be as good as it is. It is almost distortion free.
But is it all perfect? I don't think so, no. It is too thick, the movement is ugly and the bracelet is below the standards that the dial and tech have set. But again,it's 2000$

>>
>>18636555
It went from 38mm to 39.5mm. The movement is better, like you said, but it's 50 hours vs 72 hours, really not a huge impact on how I'd wear it.
>>
>>18636575
There was this Brazilian guy in late 2010s who convinced many /wt/ users (through sheer spam and determination) that a specific store in Tokyo, Japan sells cheap non-franken vintage watches and that he bought quite a few from there. He guided many users from here to that specific store (I think it's closed now, can't find it on c24 anymore) and well, after a while and many, MANY sold watches later, an experienced user opened the watch and found a different movement inside his vintage grand Seiko than what was supposed to be in. Other users later found out re-polished cases, different backs, wrong crystals etc. turns out this Brazilian guy, whuertantonio, was working there all along. Brazil has a big community in Japan so it makes sense. And obviously many users here are still mad about it.
Some users believe that antonio is still around and spams specific watches for people to buy them. Notice how it's only Japanese watches? Especially the Weekdater guy. It's a team of 5-6 people on a discord server selling watches.
>>
>>18636575
It’s a reselling business. Poorfag watch threads are for people to buy low then sell high, eventually reaching these threads for more expensive watches to do the same thing with. It’s market manipulation. It’s a similar concept with vehicles. Did you know that the Jeep XJ from the 1990s is artificially expensive because of some proto-influencer on an auto forum?

Okay, so if I ever DID spend real money on a watch, it'd STILL be a "shitter". Check this fucker out. This thing dings on the hour. That shit usually costs $50,000.
Now if only they can make an homage of the homage for like $500 I would totally do it. Pretty rad what it can do.

No. People shit on it enough as is. You'll have to wait until the next shipment comes in. I have like 9 or 10 watches in transit. I'm going to need another watch case as I'm about out of slots for my favorite watches and a couple decent ones don't have proper homes right now. There's some good stuff on the way. But I don't believe in posting the same images over and over. I've posted all of my watches. Soon enough I'll have OC. And when I post the new bunch I'll post a new update of all of them together. I'm not really buying more true shitters though. I'm not going to buy any more watches I won't ever wear.
I did just buy this box. It gets here tomorrow. I'll rearrange everything when the new watches show up.

No, it’s an extremely old meme. Back when Whoretadello was still living in Germany, he tried to make a Discord channel for non-/wt/ discussion. Back then, he at least TRIED to follow the rules. However, because he developed a reputation for doxxing (he would post pictures of people with only his own face blurred, which isn’t really doxxing, just rude) no one joined his channel.

After that, he was teased for being so unlikable and the fact that no one would join his channel was held up as evidence of that. He became bitter and decided to start spamming this general in an attempt to ruin it. When /nawt/ was created in an effort to get away from him, he followed them there and ruined that thread with shitposting.

Someone asked in the last thread about the Octo Fin and I missed it.

To answer the questions:
It fits like a cuff bracelet. It’s intended to. It’s very light, even the steel version and it’s very balanced. The bracelet is very wide (30mm) at the lugs but tapers down to 18mm at the clasp, so it’s still comfortable.

I picked steel over Ti for a couple reasons.
Mostly, I dislike Ti watches. They feel uncomfortably warm.
The Ti versions only have 30m of water resistance, while the steel has 100m and a screwdown crown.
In person, the all bead-blasted look of the Ti just looks like a gray mass, while the steel’s got all the nice facets alternating brushed and polished.

Yeah, I can't tell either. I don't need a watch that I have to retrain my brain to read and still need a couple moments to translate it every time I look.
Some of those ones which have that triangular rotating numbers thing are kinda neat sometimes I guess. Depends. I'm really just an old fashioned guy who wants a couple of legible analog hands for the most part. The weirdest I've gotten is recently ordering a super simple watch with no numbers and only an hour hand. But still I will be able to read the time quickly on it.

Why has Seiko gone up in price so much compared to other brands, it feels like? I remember seeing the SARB017 Alpinist being like $325 new, the next one was $700, and now the newest one is $925? The specs aren't going up that much, if at all. Citizen used to be trailing behind them but it seems you can get Seiko level specs and dials for $200-$400 from them now, like you used to get from Seiko. Wasn't Seiko's market that $150-$500 sweet spot? The prices they're starting to ask for, you can start looking at Hamilton, Longines, Baltic, Christopher Ward, and higher end Tissot, and I haven't ever bought or held one of those watches for $600-$1200 and felt "why did I/anyone pay so much for this" like I have for Seiko lately.

https://www.jomashop.com/citizen-bm8180-03e.html

I've bought this watch as a gift for people in my life a half dozen times, mostly working class people not interested in watches but preferring something similar to your circumstances, and every single one of them raves about it. It's solar powered so it never needs a battery, keeps perfect time, shows the day of the week and the day of the month, and you can dress it up a bit to look more professional or keep it on a cloth/NATO strap to lean into the field watch aesthetic.

Because dumb online idiots keep buying. That's the only reason. It got a reputation as an enthusiast brand and enthusiasts (i.e. internet nerds) are prepared to pay $1.5k for a $150 watch, $3k for a $300 watch and so on.

>>

Pretty much, yeah. Like I said, I bought that watch a half dozen times as a gift in the past ten years and every person I've bought them for is still wearing them without issues or maintenance. You can look at other eco-drives but I really can't recommend that specific model enough, I think you'll fall in love with it, it should meet all your needs and then some for the rest of your life.

Some for sure have quality issues. I got this from over on Jomashit, and the second hand is misaligned. Goes about 20% too far past the markers. And it does that every fucking second. They tell me it doesn't affect the accuracy, they tell me if I look from a certain angle it lines up fine. But I know. I'm stuck with it. And those fuckers are not getting any more of my money.
They make you pay to ship back their mistakes.
>>
>>18637152
Well, I think the principle "buy it nice or buy it twice" applies here, even at this low price range. As hobbyists we usually focus on more expensive pieces, but for the layman who really doesn't care about details or aesthetics too much, getting something really rock solid in this price range is possible if you're not looking for anything crazy. Are you mad that I went over his budget of 50 CAD with the citizen recommendation? Or are you upset that he has a small budget in the first place? I don't understand what your problem is.

Grey market seems to be around $500. A jump of $150 in 10 years is a lot less than the change in Seiko's prices. The old Alpinist was $350 and now it's $925.

You guys deliberately just skip all the watches in between. He's got that $150 limit and you go right to the entry level Jomashop stuff. Just pretending there aren't the Militados and Addiesdives and such that will have great specs for great prices. You sidestepped it a little by pushing the solar quartz, but for durability in freezing weather I'm not sure a Citizen is the best choice.
You're just blind or stubborn if you refuse to recognize the huge world of Chinese stuff in our current time.
>As hobbyists we usually focus on more expensive pieces
Some do, sure. But most of the people using these threads are not in that world. Even if they aspire to some fucking $5K "grail watch", they'd probably like to play around with some others. I'm inclined to believe someone who buys and wears a lot of different watches he can afford is WAY more of a hobbyist than the guy who talks about fancy shit all day long and owns two watches and talks about "buy it nice or buy it twice", lol, as if people these days are constantly being let down somehow by the amazing sub-$100 offerings.
I guess you're stuck in 2017 and you don't read or see watch reviews.
I know you can't possibly be that unaware though, especially if you hang out here, so that means you're deliberately pushing that "path". It's funny, you don't see it much here anymore. But you're still carrying that torch. Keeping the fire alive.

>>
>>18637178
Then no one respects what you think about watches. You're left in the dust. Every major watch reviewer and expert recognizes the quality for price coming out of China. Not sure why you fight that, maybe you got burned once. But I've bought dozens of them and only sent back one. And I haven't had issues with the sellers or most of the watches. They may take 3-6 weeks to arrive, but that's part of the deal. And we're okay with that.
If you really don't know what's going on you need to catch yourself up. No one believes you when you say Chinese watches are garbage. We're all past that now. SOME of them are garbage and always will be. A lot of them are making the Swiss shit their little shorts like the fucking Quartz revolution.

The most pathetic posters have to be the ones who call other anons poor.
Here's the thing, we know you are not rich. Therefore, you owning expensive stuff only shows how far you are willing to go just for the sake of showing off.
This only speaks of the deep insecurities you have.
Then you will go call another random guy poor, who in all honesty works a similar job, has similar income as you. You will call him poor because he isn't willing to spend way out of his possibilities like a retard.

I browse many boards, and have been doing so for many years.

This is selling for $250 and runs. Just look at the way those gold hands shine. I totally want it but I won't get it. I'm going to start looking locally at antique stores for watches.
I checked out Goodwill tonight but they had two HORRIBLE looking quartz shitters. Like stuff you wouldn't pay $8 for new. Just on display with the jewelry. I'm quite sure here in the pocket internet age, nothing good ever makes it close to the floor of the Goodwill. I'm sure resellers compete to get jobs there unloading the trucks of estates so they can snag all the shit that must come through the back door.
Has to be. There have been too many stories of people finding shit worth money. You know every manager of every Goodwill is on the lookout. Or someone. Only a sliver of their workforce is actually mentally disabled.

I'm not a paranoid conspiracy guy, but it just makes sense. Pawn shops and all second hand stores changed drastically with the advent of high speed internet. Only through some kind of error will anything slip through the cracks now.
You have to go directly to the garage sales and buy from clueless sellers who didn't look anything up. It's almost all ruined.
>>
Collectors and flippers and all that shit have ruined hobbies. You can't get old game systems and cartridges. You can't get old computers. Just about any collectible at all has an inflated price because of nostalgia demand and social media and ebay and all of it. Seriously, what's going to be left to discover? Everything is all laid bare now. There are no secrets, no finds. It's immediately shared and compared and appraised. On one hand you can say that "keeps 'em honest", but it goes too far in the other direction. Price goes up and only the wealthy can get in. I guess that's the tradeoff; tangibles can't be replicated for free like media. I happen to like tangibles though.

Yeah Goodwill has an online store now too where they put all the higher value stuff.
>You have to go directly to the garage sales and buy from clueless sellers who didn't look anything up.
There's a local old folk's home weekly garage sale near me where I found a casio dw100 for $10 and this ~$1200 Seiko for $5 (doesn't run, need to find a reliable watch repair shop)

What do you have against regular posters?
Do you expect this place to be a vacuum where random posters just pop by and never return? What is the point of that.
>>
>>18637568
Is this from a pro shoot?
Did you hire someone to immortalize your collection or are you a pro/semi-pro photographer?
It would make sense to gravitate towards Gramd Seiko if you are already artistically inclined.
>>
>>18637574
Posting pictures from years ago without any new insight or knowledge just increases the post count.
It’s not funny. It’s not informative. It’s only annoying.
Note also that none of these regular posters ever actually talk about watches. They just re-post pics they took years ago, sometimes multiple times in each thread, because they think it’s funny to ruin something that someone else enjoys.

As Loretadello explained a while ago, the purpose of this is specifically to irritate the posters in this thread who actually want to talk about watches. That sort of trolling is against the rules, but we’re also unmoderated, so we just have to live with it.

How are your demagnetizers doing, Anons? Any fires lately?
>>
>>18637541
For a dress watch it is and they wear thicker than that too.
>>
Question for all anons here: How much are you willing to pay for a watch compared to your monthly salary?
For example 0.5x your salary, 1x your salary, 3x your salary, etc.
>>
>>18637617
A good rule of thumb I use is to never spend more on a watch than I take home in a paycheck. My salary is approximately 60k so, after witholdings, I would never buy a watch that's more than around $1,800. That's not only a rule to pace myself, but I also think it's in bad taste to wear watches that are really high above your station in life. It shows that you have distorted priorities and poor spending habits, I think. It looks vain and immature to me.
>>
>>18637617
If you’re still thinking in terms of your salary, you should not be buying trinkets (which, let’s be honest, watches are).

First, get to the point where your investments are your primary source of income, pay off any debts you might have, then you can start to have a little fun with your salary.

Life is meant to be lived, not infinitely postponed. If you are poor, buy cheap trinkets. Easy peasy.

>I also think that 1 monthly pay is the maximum I'd spend.
Yeah, I'd agree with that as well, for one major watch in your collection. Like, I really like the Tudor BB Bronze 43mm, I'll probably pick one up this year even though it's above that 1 paycheck limit I mentioned earlier, but I wouldn't get another watch like that unless I was selling/trading the capstone piece for it. Getting a BBB used van be done in the low-mid 2000's though, so it's not like it would be a big break of the rule anyways, but yeah. I'd abide by a hard limit of 1 month's salary on a watch, regardless.
>>
>>18637641
I live in a shithole Slav country, so that particular BB Bronze 43mm is roughly 4 normal local monthly paychecks here.
You probably have a way higher salary though, so for you it might make sense to buy this as your main watch.
>>
I don't see a lot of people buying watches. A lot of asking and talk, but not a lot of "here's my new watch".
Does anyone ever buy these expensive watches? Is it a big deal when someone actually does? I bet they're showing it off nonstop. Some of you seem to have been here for years and should remember something like that.
>>
>>18637617

>>18637635
>Are you one of those guys who recommends others to not get a gf, not party when young, just get your education, work, save, and then start dating at the age of 35?
No, I think people should enjoy life, but they should be aware of what is realistically available to them.
After things like vacations, sports, and other social activities, luxury watches is so far down the list that I don’t think it’s worth getting into until you actually have money to burn.

What would you rather spend your thousand bucks on? A trip with your friends to some far-flung locale, or some shitty Seiko?

Watches is a black hole that I would not recommend anyone gets into.
>>
>>18637645
That's fair, but if you are interested in that watch, you can get used ones from around $2300-$2800 USD on Chrono24. That's my plan, anyways. I would never ever pay the $5,200 retail they ask for. I live in the states and make $60k annually, not a lot but I do live in a rural area so it's high for the relatively low cost of living. You just gotta budget and think about if that is something which is going to bring you enough joy to warrant $2,500~ USD or not. If you like bronze divers but want to spend less than $2k, you could consider Christopher Ward or Venezianico, those were my backup picks for this kind of watch I was after before I decided to just be patient and keep an eye out for a deal for the one I actually want. Great watches.

>>18637647
4chan is largely a place for working and middle class people. The upper middle and upper class groups of people who frequently buy expensive watches at the rate you're describing don't post here, they have different circles. This is largely a place for admiring those more expensive pieces and buying things under $1,500, for the most part.
>>
>>18637650
>The upper middle and upper class groups of people who frequently buy expensive watches at the rate you're describing don't post here
This. There are only two posters with six-figure collections (Mort and an anon without a name) plus OmegaDrunk whose collection is in the high five figures.
>>
>>18637653
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it either. People have different stations and hobby priorities in life, and that's all right. I've honestly got more enjoyment out of my $100 quartz Seiko SUR311 that I bought as a SARB033 lookalike after it went out of production than I do my old Longines that I ended up selling. It's funny how things work out like that. I do really appreciate tightly made, high-end pieces though. I got my hands on a green Aqua Terra and 36mm Explorer 1 a few months ago, and they were absolutely divine in the hand, I'd totally drop the 5k-7k on them if I felt financially assured enough to do so, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate cheaper watches under $1000 either.
>>
>>18637650
I wasn't describing a rate. I just asked if anyone ever ever did it with the expensive ones. I've seen a couple cheaper ones. Surely in the last several years of all these famous bitter jerks and stories of scams and all someone spent over $1k on a watch. The coffee spammer? Or did these collections accrue before their discovery of a place to boast about them on the daily?

For a thousand bucks, you are only getting a plane ticket to a far-flung locale. You will need at least 2k more if you want to have real fun with your friends there. 2k per person, not all together.

>>18637650
I am not looking for that particular watch, but I see your logic.
With my relatively low income, I am looking to buy a Seiko Alpinist as my next watch.
The newest version costs almost 1k, which is kinda crazy.
Yesterday some guy posted another earlier version from grey market for a bit over $500 (brand new). It's a version people tend to like less, but I think it's fine.
Will consider that, or get some good used one when it pops up.
>>

>>

>Umm…ackshually…For a thousand bucks, you are only getting a plane ticket to a far-flung locale
Fine, take your gf out for a night in New York City, whatever. The actual figure down to dollars and cents is not the point.
The point is that, when you’re young and your money is limited, it is preferable to spend that money on fun experiences and make lifelong memories rather than buying an objectively mediocre watch. (A watch that, by the way, you only bought as a cope for the much more expensive watch that you actually want.)
>>
>>18637659
If you're in the market for an Alpinist, I'd recommend going on Buyee, Greentoe, or Chrono24 and get a new/like new with packaging one from one of the east Asia retail sellers there. Usually $500-$700 (depending on model) rather than $700-$900. You could probably get one of the SPB121's for around $450 or less even, especially on Greentoe.
>>

Casio, Lorus. Aliexpress will be a waste of your money if you don't know what you are doing.
So again a little Lorus field watch in 35mm or some basic Casio (analog or digital) will do the trick. Nothing wrong with a Casio. Plebs don't like it, people that know watches love it. Great value for your money overall.

Theoretically yes, but he can just lie what the package really is, or what you paid for it.
For purchases under €150 you pay nothing.
So if the random seller agrees to lie about what I paid for it, should be fine I guess.
