There is no point in effortposting anywhere on 4chan or other parts of the surface level internet anymore. The internet is too easy to access thanks to every child having a phone, tablet or laptop, and every home having an internet connection; people grow up being able to access the internet as a normal part of life. In the 2000's and even creeping into the 10's in some areas, internet access was uncommon and required relatively knowledge and equipment (access to a computer and an internet connection); you had to make an effort to get online, and putting effort into things is too hard for the average person. Thus the surface level internet was full of people who were nerds, specialists and other geeky social outcasts; the average quality of discussion was higher because there were fewer people to drag it down, Myspace aside. If someone wanted to say something online, their options would be limited to a forum or usenet group of likeminded users dedicated to a specific topic, a comments section on an early Youtube video or a blog, or to create their own website, which required expert knowledge and time/money investment.

Along comes social media, showing up right before the iPhone. Suddenly, not only does John Smith have an easy to use platform, but also an easy to use device that lets him access the internet from anywhere in the world, and he doesn't even need to own a computer.

I believe that the quality of (discussion on) a website decreases the easier it is to access. You can observe this without leaving 4chan; boards like /p/ have some of the best content on the website because it has a relatively high barrier to entry - both effort and monetary - and therefore a slow post rate. On the other hand, fast boards like /v/ are notoriously low quality because of the low barrier to entry and short lifespan of threads, discouraging long, well written posts. The physical dimensions of a phone also does this, because writing a good post on a small screen is difficult.

All the good posters on /fa/ grew up and moved on, either quitting /fa/ggotry or moving to mainstream websites, and there was noone to replace them. The trouble is that it's not possible for forums like sufu, /fa/, stylezeitgeist etc to exist again; this goes beyond fashion and extends to all hobbies and interests. The internet is ruined now, the signal to noise ratio being too low with good, genuine discussion being drowned out by shitposts, normalfags, advertising and heavy handed often automated moderation. You can still find good places to discuss things, dig through archives and posts from 10+ years ago, but the type of person into fashion and the nerd behind 7 proxies in a private IRC channel are two very different people.

I would also add that the social acceptability of fashion, and increasing ubiquity of fake clothes, has been disastrous for it as an interest. And it's in the interest of fashion companies to make easy to wear clothing, because normals don't want to put effort into things. I get more out of /fa/ by looking at threads from the golden era; very very little is worth browsing for here lately. Everything (?) is saved on warosu and you'll never run out of genuinely valuable, interesting content.

Funniest thing about how much /fa/ sucks is 2chan's fashion board is still going strong. You also have to remember 2chan got stolen from Hiroshimoot by the guy who owns 8 chan and so he had to start up an entirely new site, which is 5chan:

Whenever that happens and an imageboard gets destroyed there's basically a loss of momentum that's never replaced. That's what happened when Krautchan got destroyed. It got remade as Kohlchan but it was never the same, certain famous posters never returned, the numbers never went back and it's been a long slow decline ever since.

Same thing happened with 2chan but it's managed to bounce back as 5chan somehow. So 4channers really have zero excuse. Their Japanese counterparts went through having their site and /fa/ board destroyed and still managed to resurrect it and keep it active to this very day.

Look at their threads, they actually have general threads for dressing in your 30's and 40's, and I've even seen generals for 50's and 60's (although they obviously fall off page 10 much easier). But something like that would massively help to curtail the unreal amount of generationslop arguing that goes on across the board.

They also deal with a fuck ton of people only wanting to talk about basic shit like Muji and Uniqlo but they just keep poorfags in their containment threads. They also have entire threads about roasting people who only wear Uniqlo which are pretty funny.

Obviously they have a lot of unc posters too (pretty much no one cares about Hiroshi Fujiwara under the age of 30 but he still has a general). but they also have a healthy amount of zoomers discussing currently hyped shit like Comoli.

So I don't really believe any of the arguments that people make about why /fa/ sucks so bad. There's no real reason. To be fair they don't really have effort posting on 5chan it's a lot of one sentence replies and reacting to shit like Instagram posts or YouTube videos. Also Japan doesn't have Reddit which 100% steals a huge amount of traffic from 4chan.

But otherwise there's not really any real excuse. /fa/ just sucks ass and isn't good and it has nothing to do with the modern internet or peoples ages or whatever. In fact when you think about it people getting older should actually lead to BETTER fashion discussions because people have more money to spend.

That's why I think 5chan's /fa/ board is so good, their visvim thread for example actually has like a half dozen regular posters that go to the trunk shows and order shit full price all the time. This is kinda true in the West as well actually. The guy in here who said forums in the west are dead is somewhat wrong too. Fedora Lounge is still active af because it's all Milsurp autists in their 60's with tons of money. I think Style Forum is still relatively active, again guys with money that are tailoring autists. The Fashion Spot is genuinely active (women into purses with money) and is like the only place online you can discuss current runway shows as they happen.

Style Zeitgeist and SuperFuture ARE dead but people forget both those forums had actively antagonistic management that chased off a ton of really funny, iconic, and high contributing posters. So their decline can't be chalked up as much to YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok taking over. But the point is there are actually places to discuss clothes online in the West that aren't 4chan and are active AND Japanese /fa/ is active af.

At a certain point you just gotta accept there's something more going on with why /fa/ is bad and as a huge ex tripfag I honestly don't really know the answer.

I think part of the problem with /fa/ is that the old guard just gave up on it. When we were all kids and first discovered this place, there was already a crop of older anons who would call everyone retarded constantly, for good reason. People I know irl who used to browse this place regularly would rather just not bother with that. I was the same way for a while, but I figured I'd try giving back to this place. Call me a schizo or whatever, but honestly I think there's probably a discord of trannies out there that just want to shit the place up.

Also I should add to the effort posting comment. I think Japanese /fa/ in general has more one word / one sentence replies than we do but that doesn't mean they don't effort post at all. Back in 2023 Rick Owens did a book signing in Tokyo and threw a crazy after party and one of the anons from the Rick general on 2ch attended and did a field report, pic related.

So while a lot of their posts are just like one sentence insults or telling each other to go back to twitter or kill themselves or whatever, when they do effort post it also kicks the shit out of /fa/. It's not like we have the occasional effort post and they don't. They just deff have more like super short fuck you type replies to each other. It's possibly even more mean spirited on average over there than here.

You answered the question yourself. When was the last time you saw someone on /fa/ go to a show? /fa/'s userbase is spread across a geographically much larger area than 5/fa/'s; We don't have access to brick and mortar reuse shops the way they do in Japan and are often forced to shop online to find anything interesting. Few of us live in places where runway shows are accessible. Plenty of people here, myself included, live in flyover states or countries where fashion isn't a consideration for the average person, not to mention the >walkable cities thing.

The running theme among all of these is that all of these people have money and are willing to spend it. So many people on /fa/ are poorfags or tourists who are allergic to spending more than $10 on a tshirt. Japan's reuse scene alleviates the pressure of paying retail, and the normalization of fashion in their urban centers means that (older) people who can afford retail are happy to pay.

Culture aside, I think the key issue is moderation. Many of these issues can be solved by turning them into rules and actually enforcing them. This is also a slow board, so it's not like you need a team and constant supervision.

I don't think it's a problem if trans people aren't posting themselves. Trans people are less than 1% of the population in the US and much less of a thing worldwide, losing the trannies isn't what would kill a board.

Why some people post against trannies is that they're just using this as a safe space to "pass" and feel good about themselves, while they have no interesting fashion ideas and don't even look well put together or pleasing.

It's just disingenuous, like girls who post in an online gaming community and drop references to their own gender or their own pics as a way to get validation.
