Valentine's Day Chocolate -Edition.
A bit late but I just came back from my vacation.

What's your most worn watch of 2026 so far?
What's your definition of a perpetual calendar?
What would you buy if you had 5000$ or even 15000$ to spare?
Favourite brand?
Asking for recommendations is highly encouraged. People here have Years of irl experience with watches and not just "a week on the wrist".

let's talk watches.

Sexy watch, I like the scratches, nice things should be worn

If you gave me $15k right now I wouldn't spend it on a watch, but if you said here's a newly issued $15,000 bill and you have to spend it on watches I'd get all my existing watches serviced and spend the rest on an omega marine chronometer and a 39mm longines legend diver.

I'm thinking about getting this Certina DS-1 big date, but I've never had any experience with the brand before. Does anyone here own one or have owned one in the past? Looks like it's going to be about $1,000 to get my hands on one and I'm not sure how it shapes up to that price. I really do love it aesthetically though. The bracelet is kind of weird, however. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
>>
>>18657290
These are great if you can get over the fact that the seconds hand will miss 50% of the time (you can even see that its missing the 59/60 second mark in the picture). The strap is also pretty bad, I'd recommend replacing that. Great choice though if you have small wrists or just like a smaller watch.
>>
>>18657302
Really, for small wrists? It's 41 mm and has a pretty narrow bezel and large dial, proportionally. I was actually worried it would wear too big.

If I was considering one of the more "affordable swiss" big date watches(and once in a while I do) I think I'd probably prefer the Mido Multifort TV big date. But square watches wear a little big so I might prefer the dimensions on the smaller version, which doesn't have big date. Of course these are going to be more expensive than Certina, though.

Glashutte Original has a bunch of good big date options but then you're moving even farther up market. I thought it was a good idea to do a big date diver, it's too bad their execution is 43mm diameter.

You know, maybe that's it - it's everything wrong with 2000's product design. They tried to do the jet age thing from the 60s and design products with an eye to the future but they did it in a way that looks like a gay alien dropped it here.

>Stick to the big brands.

I totally agree, i know a lot about independent brands, but i totally only buy from heritage brands.
Because in 20 years, those will still be here. And i don't care if it's not the best "bang for your buck" if you compare spec by spec.
Most of the models from heritage brands are refined over the years, even when it's just the case that's reused, they know the rules of design and wearability.

When Hitchcock was filming Vertigo in the 1960s, Tissot was already there.
Where will Brew Metric, Nivada or Christorpher Wart be in 10 years?

I hate that fucking "Watch Bros" channel guy. He JUST released a video saying this was such a great watch from $180-$200, depending on whether you got an auto or a hand-wind.
Well, I don't need to tell anyone here that you can't find this on the Timex site even offered at all, let alone anywhere else for anywhere close to $200.
Those fucking watch channel assholes are always talking about some $100 Seiko and Orient autos that haven't existed for fucking years. And people comment and just get ignored.
What a prick. I spent my afternoon trying to find an affordable champagne 34mm Marlin. It can't be done. I'm the highest bid right now on ebay but I expect it will go well over $300 before anyone wins it.
IDK WTF is happening. Just ever single month watches jump even higher in cost. Everyone just plays along. Just like fast food prices. As long as all of you overpay for everything instead of taking a stand, the prices will stay too high.

I love my watches. I love them more every day, not less. Some have fallen out of favor as my tastes evolve. But they tell a story about that time in my life. You know, a random Tuesday in December when I was inspired to make that investment. lol, but seriously, there's no emptiness here. I don't know how you see what I feel looks like joy and enthusiasm as soulless consumption. Perhaps you're just jaded and cynical because you don't love anything anymore. Didn't you see my last thread? I'm gonna get an actual Hamilton Murph. That's because I love my Militado so much from the lengthy test drive. I'm a little creeped out and also flattered that you've thought so much about me, albeit in the wrong direction.
I don't live in a hovel, I assure you of that. Nor am I alone.
I'm sorry I rub you the wrong way so hard. I've always had that effect on people. I have loyal friends and bitter nemeses. Because that's how big personalities tend to be. But look at you. I see you're also in love with your own words. Maybe it bugs you that I'm just so verbose.
But I'm guessing more than a little of it is resentment that I just buy what I want like so many candy bars. Yes, I'm a little impulsive and excessive. And as I've posted before I believe it's a harmless and affordable alternative to other, far worse habits I used to have. I should be dead. And when you have a new lease on life sometimes you don't want to scrimp and save for years to get something you could enjoy NOW.
I don't know who you are or what's in your collection or why you think you get to lecture me on how to collect and enjoy watches.
It just suggests you're not happy with yourself.

I love my watches. I love all the watches. I want all the watches. I'm gonna get as many as I can.
>>
>>18657604
That's no reason to own a watch. If you can't comfortably wear your watch you can't afford it. Don't buy anything you can't afford.

This is my first real auction where I want to win and actually care. So how does this go usually? The seller must know that watch is a $200 minimum watch. So he opens with $50 why? To entice a bunch of bidders, right? Do these usually come in under or over that projected value? Personally I'm not going to get sucked into a contest with someone and pay $280 to get it. But I would make a bigger bid to scare off others if that would work. I want to get it for less than the cheapest new one available anywhere. Obviously.
I don't know if I jumped the gun bidding higher. Was it too early? Is there some 'auctions for dummies' FAQ anyone can point to? I do want this watch. I'll do homework if it will help me edge out the competition. I don't play poker or anything so I'm unfamiliar with any strategy that may go along with this.
And I might be selling one of my own watches very soon if it turns out to be too big. Maybe I can get some liquids and tubs and a magnifying glass and miniature pool cleaning equipment and wash off and resell vintage watches as one of those "side hustle" jobs people do now. Why not let the watches pay for themselves?

>>

It’s actually pretty clever. A fake Daytona or GMT will obviously be a fake, because of the lengthy wait lists.
But the Air-King or the Explorer can be had pretty quickly in Rolex terms, so it’s slightly believable that you’d be the kind of brandsimp who’s “building a relationship with his AD”.

Question for all of you...

Got this watch as a 10-year work anniversary gift 25+ years ago. $800 back then Super thin. Problem is I never wear watches. I carry a pocket watch or use my phone.

Just sitting in my desk unused. How do I get rid of it?

No. He said $50 dollars. I know you can't even imagine spending so little on a working watch, but a lot of people do and are happy and get quality watches that last decades.
I guess you're just unequipped to weigh in on this one. You have such fancy tastes you're completely useless when it comes to identifying quality below a certain arbitrary price where you've drawn a line.
Also, he said 'minimal and black'. You're here with a $150 white watch. Clearly you're not interested in participating.

Cool second hand too. I have a Benyar and it's not bad. Not a great movement -you can feel how gritty the wind is, and it's loud when it spins, and not in a smooth way like Miyota- but it keeps good time and it looks nice. The bracelet sucks, but it will look good on a variety of straps.

How do I stop watches from sliding down my wrist?
Could it be a wrist shape problem, or just newfaggery?
With rubber straps and metal bracelets I had to wear them a bit too tight for long-term comfort if I wanted them to stay.
The only kind of strap I discovered that works for me comfortably is a parachute strap (also known as marine nationale). It is kind of like nato, but elastic and I suppose provides more friction.
Problem with these is, they make a lot of watches look cheaper, even if it's a nice watch. Also it sucks to be limited like this.
Metal bracelets look the best to me, followed by leather straps.
Nothng else comes close.

Junghans Max Bill or the Braun watch.
Otsuka Lotec if you don't mind paying secondary over retail.
>>
>>18657739
I'd throw in Nomos also, because they have that flat clinical look in simple monochrome dials but also colors if you feel like going ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.
>>
>>18657687
I really believe all it's going to take is some celebrity wearing this in a movie and eventual discontinuation for people to pretend they always loved this and blow up the price like a hot air balloon.
>>
>>18657739
Oh damn I hadn't thought of the Brauns, I guess I'd only seen the ones with more minimal dials. Cheap enough too. I think I might have to go for this chrono. I just wish they had a more normal case shape and strap attachment.

The Otsukas are really cool but way out of my price range and I'm so used to reading traditional dials that I think they'd drive me crazy in everyday use.

>>18657744
I did think of Nomos but I really love the style of the font and markings on the Mitutoyo indicator, has that real mid-century technical instrument vibe, and as far as I've seen you don't really get that with Nomos.

Autobahn and lambda lines in nomos kind of have that.
>>
>>18657817
Oh yeah I guess the Autobahn kinda does, it doesn't really capture the vibe of the Mitutoyo though. Lambda has no numerals on the main dial so not really right either. I think the Braun is definitely the closest I've seen.

That aside I'm really more interested in this sort of thing as a casual gimmick watch anyway, if I'm gonna spend $6k on a watch there are things I'd much rather have. (Incidentally I do have a watch in that price range in the back of my mind and the leading contender is a Tudor GMT.)

Grand Seiko finally added toolless microadjust to one(1) watch and made an automatic spring drive movement fit in a watch under 40mm. Only took them about 15 years to get with the program.

in any other hands a seiko would be a respectable, perhaps even venerable choice, a utilitarian, low compromise, high value, good quality piece for the every man, free of snobbery, free from the desire of high sign value luxury branding. but in your hands these specifics fade. it is but one of many, many trinkets, alone in your hovel, hoarded.

I asked Chat GPT why is Seiko so expensive now, and it is shilling hard for Seiko.
It basically told me that the pricing is justified, and that Seiko is not actually expensive, it is good value.
Apparently you are not just paying for the watch, you are paying for:
>japanese craftsmanship
>global service network
>legacy and reliability
>in-house movements
>global brand marketing (LOL)
>other random shit
Also it turns out that Seiko just got more popular in recent years, so that is driving the price up. The brand is not doing it on purpose.

Thoughts?

He's alone in his insane resentment of my watch spree. Or at least he's the lone anon trolling me for it.
Buying and sharing my experiences with a wide variety of affordable watches is a net positive for this board and there's no cogent argument against that. There just isn't.

I really don't need to defend myself but I enjoy writing, obviously. I haven't been so pumped over a hobby in years. It's insulting to be accused of impulse buying "trinkets". It's always the ones with no watch collections who have the most bitterness towards those of us who are building our own.
Some of them are trinkets of sorts, especially when I started. But I still enjoy them. Even my waterlogged $2 shitter has been a fun side project. Nothing goes to waste here.

Brand loyalty and peer pressure are strong and persistent. Just look at how these chodes in these threads go on and on and on about brands they don't even own, defending them like they get a kickback.
I think they aspire to the lifestyles of the influencers who promote Seiko and these other brands. They identify with those guys and want to be them. They want the clothes and fragrances and they parrot the opinions of these social media people. There are dozens of channels of reviewers who just toe the line and say what everyone else says.
The more paranoid conspiracy types here will claim they're all paid shills. But really these days with click farms and bots, who's to say what's real and what isn't? The software is there for threads and apps to be flooded with all kinds of fake comments and disingenuous praise. Seiko could be investing in this kind of deceptive "advertising" for all we know.

Seikos like the one I just bought seem fine for what they are. My Presage is my most expensive watch. But I don't think I'd spend more than that for one. It's high for the specs you get. But I LOVE look and feel of it so you can't put a price on that.
I know when I spend Seiko money in China that I'm getting twice the watch, if not complete originality.
