I don't know hats but if you want to dip your toes into cowboy boots you can start with Ariat just to see if you like it and figure out your fit. From there you can expand to a more traditional boot with Chisos, Rios of Mercedes, Tecovas, Tony Lama, or Lucchese, just to name a few of the big brands. I would just look around at all of them and pick the one you can afford and like the best. Rios is kind of a pain because they go through stockists, but they're my personal favorite out of the bunch since you can get very well made but simply designed boots. I'm not a big fan of the more ostentatious styles.
>>
>>18665842
what i specifically want is a boot that's goodyear welted, leather insole and outsole, no foam
tecovas have foam

These are my cowboy boots. I don't even live in the US but I always wanted a pair so I bought them. I don't get to wear them often but they're a very sturdy and supportive type of boot. I can see why cowboys wore them.

i went to a cavenders today and was pretty disappointed at the selection of brands
they had these tony lama boots that fit really well and i would have gotten but i looked inside and it's a foam insole. such a shame

I did some research into this. The film takes place in the 1860s since the plot takes place during the American Civil War
Jeans, as we know them today, came about in 1873 when Levi's put rivets on denim to reinforce them. Denim fabric existed before then though. So it is not an anachronism that he wore denim pants. Looking more into it there are no rivets on his pants, so that checks out
"Jean cloth" and denim were being made into sturdy work pants for workers, cowboys, farmers, etc. But the 5 pocket design we are familiar with today didn't come about until after 1900.
So while him not wearing riveted denim jeans is period correct, the 5 pocket design isn't. But from what I know of the production of the film, Clint pretty much just went shopping for all his own clothes or used his personal clothes, so I don't know much they were concerned with historical accuracy
>>
>>18665673
What type of hat does blondie/Clint wear?
>>
>>18666226
Tony Lamas are some of the best boots you can buy. If you are a man do not get pointed boots like >>18666128. Pointed boots are more of a women’s style, and even I don’t wear them.

I’d start with ostrich or just regular leather, and now you have to learn how to take care of them. Pick up a horse hair brush, saddle soap and a conditioner.
>>
>>18666625
You don’t really want to submerge leather in water, but I’ve gotten plenty boots soaked while hunting, and my feet have stayed dry.
>>
>>18666625
All leather can get wet. This idea it can't is stupid
Simply let it AIR DRY (don't put it next to a heater or something) completely. After that just feel it. Does it feel dry? Condition it after if needed. If it's suede just give it a good brushing. The most important thing is that you put hydration back into it since getting wet and then evaporating is what dries it out
>>
>>18667083
Mold, anon.
>>
>>18667059
It's unknown where it came from but it's believed Clint bought it himself in the USA (along with much of the wardrobe) and took it to Spain for filming
The band on the hat is not original to the hat and was added.
The actual hat was repurposed and used again in Once Upon a Time In the West but without the band. The band was used in the film on another hat. After the film the hat was lost. Someone probably has it in their personal collection

First two pairs are Lamas, the first pair is probably 7 years old.

I should also mention that anyone who is looking for boots, should also look into a belt that goes with said boots.
>>
>>18667098
Nothing, it's personal preference. Personally, if I'm spending a decent amount of money on nice leather shoes/boots, I want all of it to be leather. Foam is comfy for a bit but quickly compresses and wears out. It also absorbs moisture and smells. I don't want it anywhere near nice boots
>>
>>18667098
I dont know, if someone doesn’t like the insoles, they make insoles to put into boots.
>>
>>18667107
In a goodyear welted boot, the insole is integral to the structure. The upper leather and a welt is attached to the insole. The sole is stitched to the welt
You shouldn't be able to just swap insoles
>>
>>18667105
Fair points
>>
>>18667108
Goodyear welted boots are gay, just get some regular all leather work boots. That way you can get boots that do have a removable insole. But I also believe that anyone with ankle boots of any kind should be shot

I don't think I am larping if I get a pair of cowboy boots
>>
>>18667140
That's kinda the case with cowboy boots isn't it? If you don't actually live western then you don't feel like you deserve (for a lack of better word) to wear them?

Then again, it's not a fucking cassock, you actually can wear it, style it and own it.
>>
>>18665673
Be authentic instead of accurate. So much of the dress and design for these movies is anachronistic, it’s more about the idea of American wear than the historicity of it.
>henleys
>union suits
>waffle knits
>worn, patched, faded pants
>a comfortable, broken in jacket

Think about the type of character you would want to be in one of these movies and build your fit from there. Skew towards boxier fits, not towards slims or skinnys.
>>
>>18665673
You could get pretty close to the general aesthetic with Australian style hats, which usually have somewhat dipped forwards and backwards brims, but also some flatter brim styles are around. American cowboy hats tend to have the cattleman's crease, which shows up a bit less in Spaghetti Westerns, but American hats could be flatter brimmed, too. The Spaghetti Western hats usually have what are called teardrop and telescope hats. The rest of the clothes are more or less what 1960s and 1970s era people thought people wore in the Old West. A lot of it can be passable enough for some 1860s and 1870s stuff, but a lot of it isn't, probably more so down to the finer details of the Old West. If you're after the Western cinema aesthetic, instead of historical reenacting, that's fine. Ponchos really existed, and still exist, but were mostly worn by ethnic Mexicans and other Hispanics, and White American men usually wore regular long coats or suit coats. You can buy replicas of Clint Eastwood's boots on Amazon or eBay, I think.

a pair of 511s jeans. the cowboy boots from leon mexico, those hats are stylized mexican hat variations. angel eyes is wearing a boleroish type, not truly spanish one because again they evolved in mexico and are now stylized for spaghetti westerns. blondie is wearing a sheepskin vest. iirc clint bought those levis from a second hand store and the poncho in tgtbatu was leon's and bought in spain

I've been wanting a jacket like picrel ever since I watched the movie, but I can't find something quite like it. Ideally I'd like to dress like a 1969 cowboy rendition rather than a 1869 authentic cowboy.
I had a book on gunslingers from the old west with plenty of pics. The style they actually wore was quite outlandish.

Another thing to keep in mind is westerns are film and films use things like wardrobe to establish characters and their traits.
Angel Eyes wore black because he's the villain, etc.
Same reason Indiana Jones wore a leather jacket in the jungle of Peru. It had to establish his character to the audience

You can wear pointed boots if you want, but its not common among Americans, we normally wear round toe or square toe (which are more common for work boots with steel toes). Mexicans, and most of the Mexican Americans I know like pointed toe boots, but they also all wear square toes for work boots like us. I'm assuming the guy who said that is an urbanite yankee so just ignore him.

>>
>>18668488
Those arent pointed. Thats a classic round toe in the cowboy boot world. It was the default up until probably the 2000s when the broad square toe became the go to style.

Looking at picrel, the only style that's difficult for a man to pull off is a narrow snip. Everything else can be masculine or feminine depending on the leather, the embroidery, etc. Personally, I think exotics, esp reptiles, look best with any shapes on the top row, but look like shit on anything wider than what this pic calls a cowboy toe.

That's good to know anon. As for the embroidery I didn't wipe the dust off the boots in the last pic so the stitching on the vamp and shaft of the boots looks shiny/white. In reality it's basically the same red colour as the leather. Your chart is interesting, the boots I own have the proper 2 inch cowboy heel (so they would "hold" the stirrups of a harness if I was riding) Also the shaft of the boot is the full 13 inch length that cowboys would wear to protect their lower leg while riding/walking through undergrowth.
>>18668661
Polandbro how do have the confidence to wear your cowboy boots? Assuming you don't only wear them for western/horse themed activities or concerts. The thing that gets me is how loud they are when I'm walking around in them. That stereotypical "cowboy walks into a saloon" sound is awesome if you're walking into a saloon but very out of place just walking down a street. I'm announcing my presence from about 30ft away!

That's actually quite a story. I begun my adventure with boots a few years before COVID happened. I was scared shitless about what would people say, would they laugh at me or say mean things to me. Once I bought my first pair (just over the ankle biker boots) I was kinda paranoid, hiding it from even my family. First meeting with friends I tokk this big ass box with boots with me and changed from regular sneakers in the train, so I won't get into trouble. Meeting was okay, noone noticed the boots tho. When I was travelling back home I changed it back to sneakers. I was kinda glad it went that way, because people showed me they kinda don't care about it and it made me feel less nervous.

Then I stopped changing footwear in train, and again, people didn't care. Then I bought boots with high shaft, Sancho, and again, noone basically cared even with loud walking noises. It took me some time, but that ignorance from my compatriots helped me.

Sure, a few people noticed too, It wasn't exactly without noticing, but nothing stereotypical. It was something like

>nice boots Anon
>thanks

... and basically that's it. Poles usually keep their opinions to themselves I believe.

About the sound - it does gets loud, especially in quiet evening streets but that's kinda name of the game isn't it? At first I was nervous about it too and hoped it won't be that loud, but after a few "wow nice boots" from friends (yeah I finally got a few opinions) and meeting fellow western impostors and cosplayers wearing boots it was okay and I got used to it. I kinda am proud of it now. Also helped me with self-esteem, boosting it.

For a board where every thread has people accusing each other of larping, this thread sure is refreshing. More of an engineer or harness boot guy myself but some of those exotic leather cowboy boots sure look like fun.

What's the difference between enginners and harness?
>>

Mostly just the buckles and toe profile, engineers are round, harnesses are square

>If you are a man do not get pointed boots

square toe boots literally look like clown shoes and you look like a hick if you wear them. sure theyre comfy but they are in no way effay. and slightly pointed round toes look much more visually interesting than broad round toes imo

women wear exclusively snip toe anyway, even though they still look cool on men (see picrel for mine). >>18666128 looks fine and not at all feminine

as for material, ostrich looks like plucked ballsack but it's supposedly very nice feeling; i wouldnt know i only wear leather boots, which i think tend to have the most appealing designs

>its not common among Americans, we normally wear round toe or square toe
>most of the Mexican Americans I know like pointed toe boots

i beg to differ, i hardly see mexicans wearing anything but work boots. pointed toes are more spagwestern and if not, then a nashville fashion/performance type boot, no?

if you are actually interested in incorporating design elements from literally that movie without larping as a cowboy, I do have some recs, considering that's exactly what I did
Get some high-top dress boots like picrel (those are literally the ones from Drive btw)
With dark (preferably black) well-cut jeans you will have the bottom half of clint's silhouette here >>18665679 assuming you're reasonably lean. and white
for the top, baggy and warm-colored to match the poncho look. so probably a jacket of some kind, a little ornamentation on it too if you can find it. Good luck trying to make that work in the summer, though, assuming you live somewhere hot. you'll probably be down to just a button down in the coming months.
Alternatively, brown corduroy pants are also excellent with these boots, like tuco's fit. Ultimately, the most important element is to adopt a cool, stoic, competent air about you.

if you're asking this question on 4chan I don't think you want to be wearing actual cowboy boots. they are pretty common to see where I live (North Carolina) and they look like dog ass almost all the time, probably because as >>18671384 points out all the men get square-toe boots which look terrible. But it's a signifier of being a culture I am not a part of, WASP-y hicks and rednecks. no hate to them or anything. If you are dead-set on wearing cowboy hats and boots though, good luck, and more power to you.
>>
>>18671355
Heels can vary, though the standard is a woodsman or logger hell which is about 1 3/4 inches, though I've seen people get them with shorter heels for dressier boots. Never seen any with zippers on them. They're both just a different kind of pull-on boot, so really not that different from cowboys I imagine.

>>
>>18671413
Funny thing is that I heard about cowboy boots (who doesn't) and harness boots, but never engineer one. Can you provide some good examples of good engi boots?
>>
Can I get a list of good cowboy boot makers to check out? There are a lot that make USA boots but also have Mexican lines, and some that are exclusively made in Mexico. Lots that use foam insoles or cemented soles. I'd like a list of good brands to look into
>>
also what should i look to avoid? like is 'injected sole' good or bad?
>>
>>18671809
Cowboy boots, like any good "heritage" style boot should be as much leather as possible. That means NO foam insoles (they compresses and wear out and get holes and trap moisture and smell and only exist as a cost cutting measure marketed as a comfort "feature").
Goodyear welted minimum, but may of the top brands do holdfast construction which is traditional and even stronger (channel cut into the insole, welt and uppers attached to the channel vs Goodyear welted which has a glued on ribbing that can fail or come unattached). Avoid Anything with a glued on sole as those are cheap trash
Rubber sole vs leather is personal preference, but leather is obviously the classic traditional choice, but rubber is more durable and hard wearing and better grip. This is all personal preference
Cheap brands use plastic heel and toe stiffeners which can crack and break and don't break in.
As long as something has no foam insoles and is Goodyear welted or holdfast construction with no plastic stiffeners, you should be good to go

Off the top of my head some of the quality makers are Wesco, Attractions, John Lofgren, Clinch, Role Club, Unsung, and I'm sure some custom shops. They're really pricey boots though, from what I understand cowboys usually use thinner leather for the shaft for comfort and flexibility, but engineers usually have horsehide for the whole thing, so it's a lot of leather for a pair of boots.
>>
>>18671949
Interesting. Are they any good? I mean if you want to look cool you go for cowboys, if you want to look badboy you go for harness. What are engies for? And am I correct with previous statements?
>>

I mean just depends on what you're going for. They're mostly associated with greasers but I don't dress up like that myself. Really they're just well-made leather boots with a lot of ankle support. They do get some nice rolls on the toe after a while if they're made from quality horsebutt leather.

>>18672053
No, these are harness boots. No buckles, square toe, pull tabs at the top.
>>
>>18672068
We always just called these "motorcycle boots"
>>
If you want to do it in a non larpy, non embarrassing way:
Rugged leather boots or Chelsea's
Or a Sherpa jacket
Can probably find a scarf with cowboyish prints
And wear a shirt. Chambray, denim, something rugged.
Otherwise everything else is about color palette and looking manly. You can't cheat that too much
>>
>>18672068
Well, what can I aim for with engineer boots? I own a few pairs of cowboy boots and harness boots, I kinda know (I don't claim being alpha and omega) how to wear them and look good/adequate, but I've never thought about engies. I assume wannabe greaser is one goal, are there any other?
>>
>>18672164
Engineers are just a variation of pull on boots. Any fit that eorks with the cowboy and harness boots you already own should work with them. Unless you're leaning too far into western or cowboy style, I guess.

I've got a little bit of everything, and it's really just a horses for courses kinda situation. The super pointy ones only get worn for formal stuff, the wide squares are work beaters, and the round and narrow squares are somewhere in between. I'd like a nicer pair of round toes for business casual/dressy casual type situations but I haven't found the right pair yet.
>>
>>18671384
>>18672451
Also, forgot to say, it's funny. Where I grew up in SoCal it was the opposite of the rest of the country, any kind of square toe (western or not) was a latino thing and white people always wore round or pointed toes. It took me years to get over feeling like I was wearing "beaner shoes" when I put on square toes.

Lots of anachronisms in westerns in general. While Leone was greatly able to make his movies more realistic looking, the precision is not documentary level either.
In TGTBATU there's many of them : the holsters are period innacurate, cartridge colts as well, dynamite as well, pants with belts instead of suspenders... well it doesn't matter much. It's a great movie anyways.
>>
>>18673552
I wonder how much of that had to do with no internet back then and no easy way to research stuff combined with the fact Leone and the crew was mostly Italian. How much good Italian language sources on the American West were available to them?
>>
>>18673720
There is this book, TGTBATU behind the scenes that gives some answers to that. Leone really did due diligence with pictures of the war and actual historical data while keeping the spirit of his previous movies ; while others (Americans included) were making mistakes after mistakes on uniforms and weapons most notably. Giving a Winchester to a Confederate is like giving a M16 to a WWII GI.

Very few westerns to my knowledge succeed in having a great story, great movie aesthetics and historical accuracy. My preferred ones are Lonesome Dove and Ride with the Devil, Tombstone did great with costumes and locations (less with the actual lives of characters) ; to a lesser extent Josey Wales did somewhat good too
>>
>>18673800
I liked Ide with the Devil a lot, save for Tobey McGuire's bland performance.
One of my favorite westerns of all time is The Long Riders, if only because it shows a variety of revolvers being used instead of everybody using the Colt SAA artillery model.

I really like these boots Lee Van Cleef wears in For a Few Dollars More
I guess they're just black cavalry boots, but they just look so good
>>
>>18676619
Easy to find boots in that style. They look cool because they look heavily worn.
>>
>>18676622
>They look cool because they look heavily worn
which is the key that so many people miss. they assume if they just get one more pair it will be the one, when really they just need to wear the hell out of what they have
anyway, do you know anyone that makes those kinds of boots I can check out?
>>

Mexican charros are gay. I'm Mexican and this shit is too stuffy and too formal. Unless you're going to a "desfile"/festival who the fuck would go out like that? Jackets are too cropped and pants too tight. Plus all that faggy embroidery and the huge sombrero. No thanks.

I am planning on my next vehicle purchase being an F-150 simply because I want one
At the moment all my vehicles are paid for and I have no desire to get another while vehicle prices are as retarded as they are

Nevermind that the retard in the pic is wearing a brown belt with black boots my question is would a staw hat look out of place with a black outfit? Summers are hot where I live and I don't want to cook my fucking head with a black felt hat.

Traditionally people in cowboy hat areas wear straw in the summer regardless of what they're wearing. The classic dates are Easter to Labor Day for straw. If you really want to match, though, you can get black straw hats.

If possible I also strongly suggest you go try hats on in person, they're like glasses or whatever where different ones look good or bad on different people. If you've got a Boot Barn or a farm/ranch store in the area they're likely to have a lot of affordable options.
