As far as a better look than sneakers, go with double monk strap shoes or loafers. Suede is a neat option for either one. Then there's boots. Not work boots, but not dress boots either.
Loafers, boat shoes, dress shoes, Chelsea boots, chukka boots, boots of various kinds all good in the right context
