Endgame Watch - Edition.

Post your will-be endgame-watch. Did you already buy it? Tell us more because:
This thread offers a forum to discuss and debate wristwatches, pocket watches, and clocks. Several members here are highly knowledgeable in specified areas of horology, so please contribute to the thread by asking questions and/or asking for advice if you are planning on purchasing a watch from an AD or the grey market. Please post pics of your watches here; it doesn't matter if it's worth 5$ or 50000$, because there might be someone who wishes to eventually purchase the same model that you own and would love to hear some real-world advice regarding ownership. The experience matters the most, not the price.

Everyone is welcome in this thread, because we are all Frens here.

How well or bad does the negative display work in daily use? I had to sent back pic related, Casio 5600, because the negative display was barely readable without major struggle to get a right angle to look at it.
Basically this but worse:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMpwQE1IxYg
On the other hand, I have read that there's a next generation of negative displays that resemble e- ink and it supposedly has much better viewing angles (but still worse than positive version).

Is it difficult nowadays to swap between a bracelet and a leather strap? If I wanted to get a watch that I could comfortably do that with, should I look for something special, or just grab like one with a bracelet and a matching lug-width strap or the other way around? Any brands or models to look out for?

I want YOU to stop posting THAT same fucking Citizen. Are you dense?

You post as if it's perfectly normal in a watch thread to just do the same fucking thing over and over. You're an insufferable pile of garbage. People like you make 4chan suck. I guess it's a small price to pay for anyone in your physical vicinity who'd otherwise have to tolerate you were you not glued to the internet. But for this board it's hell.

Not a watch guy and I thought about buying my first real watch but I really don't understand the difference between an 8,000€ Rolex, a 4,000€ Omega and a 500€ Citizen

Is it mostly just a matter of brand name and status?
If so what's a Rolex-equivalent that's not Rolex? Ideally one I can just walk into a shop and buy it.

It sucks. There's an auto light on setting for low light use when turning the wrist, but it's also not a perfect solution.
You can change the polarized film inside the module to make it positive, or swap to a positive TN or STN display module. Both can be done via DIY.
The new negative MIP display is very readable upon testing on my wrist, but the bezel of the current 5600 lineup doesn't fit on the new and bigger 5600 MIP module, so I can't swap bezels.

>I really don't understand the difference between an 8,000€ Rolex, a 4,000€ Omega and a 500€ Citizen

There's a big gap between a Shitizen and a 5K Omega, then above that price there's a diminishing return but still a Rolex is usually better.

Rolexes have a perfect wearing experience from the watch to the bracelet (that's why people almost never change a bracelet on a Rolex).
A newbie might think that a bracelet is the same from a $500 to a $10K, but a bracelet on a Rolex will have:
>no gap between the case or bracelet (less than 1mm)
>a good tapper, screwed last links (not pins)
>ceramics used inside every link so overtime there's no play in the bracelet
>micro-adjustments
>better finishing on the metal (exact same brushing than the case, alternate brush and shiny parts), 912L metal as well
>...

Then the movement, the reliability over DECADES.
You can still service a Rolex from 1950 and it will work, it's made to last a lifetime.

After lengthy discussions with my watch mentor and self analysis I've come to the conclusion that all watches are shitters.
Yes, ALL watches. Your Rolex is a shitter because you overpaid for outdated brand slop. Even your Casio is a shitter, but at least it's cheap.
You may think this seems depressing and defeatist, but it's no use trying to argue against logic.
For me, this revelation ties horology to something called positive nihilism; nothing really matters and that's a good thing! You can do whatever you want, go anywhere you dare, eventually you'll still end up in the same place.
This way of thinking has led me on a true path of discovery in horology. I am not seeking status recognition, I'm not trying to impress anyone, I am simply following my heart, buying what I truly want and I'll continue doing so till the day my short stay on this ball of dirt is over.
All watches are shitters, and that's a good thing.

The Richard Lange (left) has an additional bridge plate that holds the mechanism for the heavy central seconds hand, and it also has a Breguet overcoil hairspring. The Lange 1 (right) has the additional complications of date and power reserve, BUT it has a flat hairspring. With Lange, the overcoil is typically found on very complicated watches with a big price tag, so it's nice that it appears on the Richard Lange which is meant to be as simple, legible, and accurate as possible.
I asked a Lange watchmaker at a launch event why the overcoil isn't present on the Lange 1 and other models. I thought perhaps the timekeeping accuracy improvement is negligible and it's just a homage feature. What he told me that it really does improve the timekeeping, but accurate timekeeping isn't a key feature of the Lange 1 family, whereas it is for the Richard Lange family.
This sort of pissed me off, because for a company that markets themselves as the pinnacle of watchmaking, it sucks to see that they don't include an overcoil hairspring because "we don't care about accuracy on most models." Clearly their Richemont-backed marketing department understands the average normalfag watch-buyer will not obsess over such autistic details, and it is therefore pointless to put in extra effort beyond the pre-defined concept of what each watch should represent as a marketable product.
It's a very German approach, really. They could make every watch better but they'd rather have a range of quality-levels to arbitrarily create a hierarchy. They say every Lange has the same level of finishing, which is mostly true, but there are other shortcuts they take.
Because I love spring drive though, I already have a watch that tickles the accuracy pickle. I just don't know I will ever be able to justify spending 4x the cost of my next most expensive watch to buy a Lange 1 just because I think it's pretty.

I will never understand how they got the depth of the dial to be so deceptively deep but so simple looking at the same time. The reflection of the CITIZEN logo, the seemingly floating markers on the surface, making it look like it's alive. The date window, I my God that date window where does it even begin? What's its height, it's depth? Is it higher than the markers? It misses the hands by how much? And what's going on with that depth perception? It looks like the window will be flooded any minute now by the live dial, swallowing it, and yet, it remains protected.
Even to the plebian, untrained eye, it feels like there's so much more going on. That Phoneix at 6? Yeah, that's the stuff that only the best of the best can claim.
The dial text? CITIZEN. and NOTHING else. Nothing else is needed. Those who know, know.
It truly is an anomaly in the watch world.

I need advice. I'm considering buying Addiesdive AD2519 watch from Aliexpress (pic related), but reading reviews about Miyota 8215 movement and how it produces a lot of unwanted sound gave me a pause. How loud is it really?
I have a watch with Miyota 82S0 movement and it is very quiet but I'm not sure I can directly compare it to 8215 even if they seem to belong to the same movement family.
Does anyone here have any hands-on experience on Miyota 8125 movement and can give a comment?

I have at least five of them. It's a noticeable whirring sound, but I like it. I flick my wrist to make it spin and see how long I can make it go. Like spinning a coin on its edge on a table. But you're charging your watch if you spin in the right direction.

This is my favorite watch with a noisy Miyota. But it's a good movement. Most of them come with hacking now too. The 9000 series is a little better I've read. But I think for everyone's practical use the 8000s are fine. I've seen most watch reviewers saying that and I've not had any issues with mine; but like I said, I enjoy the noise. NH35, PT5000, and others don't have a noticeable rotor sound.
I have a couple of $40 autos with loud rotors, but they're shitty because they're bulky and heavier movements. The rotors tend to shake the case on those ones.
To summarize, Miyotas may be audible but it's not associated with any inferiority. With a lot of Aliexpress brands you can upgrade movements for not a lot of money. I think the SW200 costs a full $100 more when it's offered, but it's a Swiss ETA clone, top of the line. Also, a lot of Addiesdive watches are updated so they don't have that logo anymore. If you don't like it there should be alternatives and even a sterile dial. But as far as those really common pilot designs go, multiple brands and multiple "stores" will sell many versions of the same thing. Especially that one. And there will be different prices and levels of quality and even movements available. Really look at everything. Type in the dimensions in the search and you'll see many options, and sometimes you can find the exact same one but $15 less with free shipping. Sometimes one store will have slightly different colors or straps. Nothing is worse than finding out you could have saved $30 or more on a watch if you just scrolled down further. But Addiesdive is a good brand with a reputation for quality.
I've seen a few reviews where they spin the rotor for the mic so you can hear it.
>>
>>18674166
Thanks a lot! I will do one more round of sifting through reviews where they actually record the movement noise and then I'll make the final decision if the noise exceeds my tolerance. If so, I will consider buying this watch with NH35 movement, even if it is a bit pricier.

By the way, is the whirring noise present constantly, or is it only audible when the watch is charged to the max (when springs are at their maximum tension) and gets quieter over time?

No, the noise is just the sound when it spins. There's no resistance when it fills up like with winding the crown on some older movements. And even if it were that way, it's likely a unidirectional rotor system anyway and is only charging if it's spinning in the right direction. But it's not distracting in your life. If you're by yourself in a quiet room and you do a waving motion you can hear little spins. You can learn to control it so it does or doesn't spin too. It's just momentum. But I find myself flicking my wrist absentmindedly while wearing a quartz or a handwind and then being disappointed, as I often have some kind of automatic with a rotor to flick, regardless of how apparent that is when I do it.
I might do a quick video and post to /wsg/ and link to it. Also, there's an entire budget watch thread that Addiesdive discussion would fit better in. >>18674068

>>
>>18674332
There’s no hard and fast rule since it depends on your wrist size and shape, along with other factors like the shape of the watch. (i.e. square watches wear much larger than round watches)
The style of the watch matters too. A 34mm dress watch with a narrow bezel might look fine but a 38mm dive watch might look elfin.

I know this watch is a joke about having all the time in the world to do what you want to do in retirement, but I think it's actually a terrible idea for a retirement watch for the same reason a Daydate is a great retirement watch. Not only is it easy to lose track of time as you grow older(a lot of clocks intended for senior people will have the day even if they don't have the date to make sure they can remember their day to day routines) but it can remind you to be mindful of the day and savor it for what it is.

Also it's SOLID GOLD, FUCKERS!!!!!

Sup watch nerds. So i have this Seiko 5 daily beater but my strap broke and I need to get something to replace it. Summer is coming so I don’t want leather, I don’t want a nato or any nylon really. I don’t want rubber because the watch isn’t waterproof (yes I’m autistic) but I was thinking maybe a Milanese. What do we reckon? Is a Milanese going to be too dressy and formal or is it kind of sporty? Are there any other choices? I was looking at apple leather ones but do they withstand sweat?

Perlon, sailcloth. Also hybrid straps with leather upper and rubber underside. Milanese would stand out a bit due to the black dial, but you can try.
>>
>>18674332
As >>18674344 said it depends, but by today's standards anything under let's say 35mm will look small. Smart watches have skewed the average way up, it's better now that they're getting smaller, but half the people walk around with small black pucks on the wrist. Smaller might also mean harder to read. Some youtuber once said that the ideal dial size is 29mm.

It’s the first nice watch I own now. The only current decent watches I own is my Casio F91W and a Garmin Fernix 7X I only owned for three years before it shat on me. I went to the only two GS stores in LA and sales rep was really nice, I was honestly nervous as this was my first browsering these high end luxury stores without being scoffed at for looking like a poorfag. I got to try on a few different watches before this one caught my eye and decided to pull the trigger on it. The Sales rep had threw in some Japanese whiskey tasting and a GS branded pen while he was fitting the links to my wrist. Overall really pleasant experience.

>>18674971

>>
>>18674976

Ah so you've tried it on slready? What's the dial color? Is it just plain silver or does it change colors depending on the light? Mine goes from white to silver to gray, and it's very reflective, like they've coated it with rhodium or something.
>>
>>18674945
They come out of the factory unregulated, take it to a watchmaker (ask for the price first), he can regulate it and it'll perform much better.

If you go two tones, you have to put some gold on the bracelet, otherwise it just looks like the dial belongs to another watch.
That moonphase looks like shit, it doesn't inspire a majectic night sky. It doesn't inspire a retro style either, it's just a tasteless mall design.
Moonphases go better with leather straps anyways
Badly integrated date.
7 row bracelet is 3 different widths of links is not a clean design
The shield logo is shit, i wish Tudor would use the Rose logo instead.

You just know that it's their entry point, they try to make those kind of shit on purpose.

Plenty of reviewers aren't full of shit. They just don't have millions of viewers. But I'm not that into super expensive luxury stuff, so there are many reviewers I pay no attention to who probably are shilling.
I like the really honest guys who just point out all the pros and cons of each watch. I haven't seen many videos where it's just all praises. Watches without anything to critique are out of my price comfort zone.
I'm blowing up this Polish dude's ebay messaging inbox about the $438 Murph. It's a curious case. He's got nothing but the Murphs for sale, and they could even be the same one that he has two straps for. First time seller. But he accepts returns. And like I said I'm covered either way. If I crack it open and find out it's counterfeit (or if it's just brutally obvious from first sight like my "Alpinist") ebay refunds me.

The only reason I haven't bought it already is just because that's a bit of a splurge even if it's all legit. I guess since I can't lose I should just jump on it before someone else does. May as well get the bracelet one too. I can easily change it down easier than up, and for just 20 some dollars more IF it's the real deal that's the smart buy. Resale value wise.
And if I decide it's not better than my homages I guess I can just "flip" it and sell it for $600.
See, I don't know why he's not doing that. He could still undercut everyone else selling them at $800 to $1,000. The Alpinist I should have seen coming. But this is different. He could ask $700 and still do better. Is it true, those jokes about the Polish? LOL
>>
There are at least 3 different sellers in different countries (including a guy here in USA) with sub $500 Hamilton Khaki Murphs for sale. They all have no sales history and the same exact info listed for the watch. Only the Polish guy offers returns.

Even with my money back guarantee I think the main thing holding me back is not that it might be a fake watch, but that it might be real. Then I'd have dipped my toe into Swiss watch territory and suddenly spending $500 for a watch is not so intimidating. Will I hold it and the snobs here will all have been right and I'll really *feel* the craftsmanship and the "high horology" of this higher level? Will I suddenly think all my shitters suck? And then start wanting my first Rolex?
I don't want that to happen to me.
The Murph is really supposed to be the watch to end the hunt. Just get it and be done. But I see people who just got deeper once they got that watch.
>>
But if I'm going to spend that kind of money, maybe I'd rather have this. Fuck. A $50 coupon that's about to expire is fueling this whole thing. I should just get a cool $125 watch so I can redeem it in time and stop drifting into spendier territory. I don't know if I'd be able to wear them without fretting about damage.

I would just wait a little while and see how you feel instead of rushing to buy. Use the coupon on something else or just let it expire and wait until you've saved up another $50 so you can make the decision without fomo
>>
Holy Shit! I want this! 39mm, $200.
>>
>>
Can you please stop reposting this? It's just getting embarrassing now.

Dude, I became an ebay seller just to get this stupid coupon. And it has not been worth it. It's like when Elaine lost her punchcard for the free sub. The subs taste bad, but you have to hang in there and eat the free one.
I went through a lot of shit and barely even made a sale in time. I've come too far to not use it.
I'm aware I'm being a totally idiotic consumerist piece of shit right now, but I'll make it up somehow later.
In the meantime, I need to make a decision.

>>18675043
Batteries are cheap. But I realized those are 38mm which is too big for that style. I love my Timex E-line at 34mm. I would have gotten a Precisionist if it were the same size.

But more importantly, is it possible that those Murphs are real? I'm not dropping $800 for a watch. $400 I will do, especially if it's for something that's $1,000 new. I even told these guys I don't mind if it "fell off a truck", wink wink.

I might see what the best deal I can get on a watch with at least a 70 hour power reserve is. I have lots of research to do still. I'm really going to stop buying watches for a while after whatever I get. So maybe I should get a big one.

Shit, this comes in green too. Bulova is no shitter. There's one at a local department store that's $500 and I can't find it anywhere online. It's maroon and made of enamel with an enamel bracelet. I think it had subdials but it wasn't a chrono. Mystery watch I've had in my head a couple months since I saw it. If it's at the store it must exist online, but I haven't found anything like it after a lot of looking. I'm going to go back and try and see it again.

I don't know what country you're in but you probably have something equivalent to a kay jeweler or jared galleria of jewelry in or around your local shopping mall that stocks bulova and citizen. Go there and take a look at the watches in person. When a watch has polished finish all over the case and bezel and a really shiny pale colored sunburst dial like this it just looks really cheap in person in the way that cheap chinese fashion watches made of chromed brass rather than steel look. When everything is shiny there's not enough visual contrast to make it look interesting or show that someone carefully considered how the watch would look and wear or how comfortably the wesrer could read it. Also they're on the thick side for what they are.

I basically had to navigate this choice myself because when I got married my wife waited until the last minute to make me aware that she got her family and friends participating in the wedding ceremony nice purses and stuff to thank them for being in the wedding and I didn't want to be unfair to my best man so I had to make the last minute scramble through the nearby malls to get the best gift watch I could find. The choice was basically down to the 38mm murph, something from bulova (probably this thing) or something from citizen. I knew it had to be the murph because it's the most classical and versatile watch in the price range(you can often talk stores down to around $500 or so) and it's thin and has 20mm lugs so you can put it on whatever straps you want. (I think the bulova had 21mm lugs?) The bulova and citizen models with magnifiers on the dates also look retarded.

I don't mind the citizen tsuyosa watches, not sure about the sunburst but I have the more "cut" NK5010-51L and I think it looks nice. I don't think you can compare it to the Murph though- it costs more than three times as much as citizen/bulova. The "look and feel" difference between a 300 dollar watch and a 1000 dollar watch is night and day.
>>
Ehh... the Murph won't make me happy. Just looking at it on the screen and looking at the homage on my wrist, the crown sticks out too far. Even that 'mall shitter' Bulova has a better crown than the Murph. It's always something. The true Murph has longer lugs than I like anyway. And $400 is probably too good to be true. Those guys probably figured out a way to not get in trouble or lose money selling scam watches even when ebay sides with the buyer.

There are just SO many people asking $900. One guy want's $1,200. Same fucking watch, all of them. I don't get why there are wildly varying prices.
There are lots of pretty sweet deals though. I don't know if the coupon expires at midnight or I have all day tomorrow.

There's a difference between a vintage watch and a trash old watch.
What you post is depressing;, that was bought in 1978 by some accountant who needed to know the time but had zero money and zero taste.

Fast forward 40 years later, that accountant dies in a nursing and even the kids don't want those watches. They said to the nurse "eh, you can throw it all away, my dad had nothing of value, only SHIT watches".
Then the nurse, LaQuincha, tries to sell the shitter on Ebay, and you faggot repost it here.

That's the cycle, you post jinxed shitters from dead people.
You are the butthole of the whole watch market.
>>
>>18675154
I actually feel badly when I'm looking around on chrono24 and see old watches that are personalized with engravings and notes to the recipient and stuff. Like, fuck, this guy got a watch through working or having a good relationship with someone else for many years, he was some way or another loved and appreciated, and now probably the grandkids are seeing if they can get something better than the gold scrap value for it. Fuck that's grim.
>>
>>18675154
Why would you invent some stupid story? All that matters is that a watch looks good to me. I guess our tastes don't align. There's nothing objectively wrong with any of these watches.
>>
>>18675157
I don't think it's always like that. There might not have been anyone left to care. Or maybe it was left in a storage unit and sold at auction. Who knows?
Not everything has some depressing story tied to it. Not everyone's kids are heartless, greedy little shits who want to get some money and run off.

Everyone here today is such a fucking downer. Even more than usual.
THAT is grim.

There's watches like this you find all the time, it's the NOMOS ludwig given to employees by Siemens. Very often they try to sell them immediatly.

Those are literally new NOMOS, just engraved and NOMOS does not appear on the dial but a white on white engraving of the Siemens guy (which is a plus imo).

I expect something artistic of THE fancy watch. Artistic but toned down enough to not make it look like an Invicta.

haha, I guess I'm doing it wrong. By now I should really want a middle management watch, right? I should have "graduated" to a "higher" taste and price bracket. I've learned about watches with my little shitter training wheels, and now it's time to start sinking thousands of dollars into each watch. Is that how it's supposed to be?

You're so clueless and stubborn. I don't even think you're posting in good faith. It's as if you don't recognize that there are lots of collectors who just enjoy affordable watches. You got sold a bill of goods, dingus. You've been conditioned to believe all the stupid shit you keep spouting. After all these months you act like you still don't fucking get it.
But you do. You recognize that I'm different than you are. And you wish to insult me for it. You try to extinguish my joy with your negativity and disapproval.

I wouldn't buy any of them in the first place because I'm not a chump. I'd instead (which I have) buy a superclone, post it here, and watch no one say a thing. I've done this before, several times. They're not terribly expensive. They're the price of a "Eh" Citizen, and they're completely undetectable to 99.999% of the people here. No one's ever said shit when I've posted mine, and I will continue to. I'm debating what to buy next just to keep poisoning the well.
>>

>You recognize that I'm different than you are
yes. you are lesser. everyone is better than you. you are as bad as it gets.
>It's as if you don't recognize that there are lots of collectors who just enjoy affordable watches
none have even 20 watches let alone 80. you're a wasteful faggot. if you bought 80 things you were happy with, you wouldn't keep buying them. you wouldnt even get to 80. you just like spending money and apparently alixpress sellers are perfectly happy to take it. the chinks selling you 'boderry' are just as much of conmen as the ones selling you fake vintage seikos. they all take you for a mark. because you are.

so to reiterate, you are alone in your hovel, with a pile of shitters nobody appreciates, including you, searching for any way to fill the void in your soul. your family left you.

Lots of collectors have way more watches than me. Just watch some of the channels of the people who review them. Those guys show off huge collections of inexpensive watches. Are you really unaware of that? Do you actually think they have fewer than 20?

You should probably comment on their videos. Post things like that, that you're better than they are. That they are "wasteful faggots". What exactly am I wasting? My collection is in great condition in nice display boxes. I keep them shined up and set. I love them and wear them.

I don't have any Boderry watches though. I don't care for them. We all make mistakes. I'm not a mark. I got a refund for my "fake vintage Seiko" in return for a positive rating. I always win. I've never paid for a watch I wasn't happy with.

A lot of people appreciate my watches. There are comments here all the time that are positive. And I sure as hell appreciate them. Do you think this is all an act? That I'm faking enthusiasm? That I keep buying watches as some sort of goof?

And no one left me. My family is here.

Maybe I am trying to fill some void. That's what hobbies can be. I know it's been hard to be as happy as I was before my dad died. The watches have helped keep my spirits up. I try and spread the joy of buying watches here, but I know you don't care for it. Good thing I'm not concerned about pleasing you.

All of this attitude you're giving me. It's not about me, it's about you. Always is.
I'm sorry you don't appreciate what I'm doing here, but I'm not going to stop because of some miserable troll's posts. If it makes you feel better to be a jerk, go right ahead. I have a healthy self image. I can take it.

lol, sapphire is for suckers! You really don't need it in watches under $500. Only shitters give it to you to get you in the door. Under no circumstances should you buy an affordable watch with good sapphire crystal and other quality specs. They don't belong on counterfeit watches. Just save your money so you can better appreciate the design language of the TRUE artistes at old Swiss companies. Buy a watch only when you can afford to give the Swiss their due. Anything less is just retarded shitter support, and that's just so wrong, man. Taking the chocolate out of the mouths of watchmakers' kids so you can enjoy someone else's design for money you can easily afford. How dare you? Who the fuck do you think you are?

>>
>>18675555
But mineral glass is better option than sapphire for an everyday watch, not to mention a sport watch. You want it to absorb impacts instead of shattering. Shallow scratches can be polished and the glass itself is cheap to replace, unlike sapphire crystal.
