I bought a chambray shirt and a cotton knit sweater on sale from jpress. Overall quality was ok if they're on sale imo. I wouldn't pay full price. This is the best pic I have of them without having to get up.

The shirt is mediocre honestly. A noticeable step down in construction and overall feel vs other more premium options. This is not their made in USA line, so I can't compare.

The knit sweater is made in USA and has a good feel and construction to it, but sleeve sizing makes me feel like a wizard wearing it. I buy L sizes to fit my shoulders.

I was thinking of getting my first pair of flannel trousers. I wanted these mid-gray ones (middle ones) but they're sold out in my size. Thoughts on either of the other ones? (light grey or light brown).

I'm thinking the light grey is too light and would have too much contrast for a lot of winter things. I have a fuckload of light khaki/stone/beige/sand/etc pants so the light brown could either fit right in to existing outfits or would just be worth it. I have some light grey chinos and never seem to use them since they're so light.

It's 8% cashmere / 92% wool and 350g so I'm not sure if the durability would be an issue.
>>
>>18684852
>8% cashmere
That has got to be absolute bottom of the barrel cashmere they're putting in there. Better to go for 100% wool.

>>
>>18675743
Why don't they ever list the lining materials? Do people not care about that so they don't bother? I think I'm going to join you.
>>
What can I do for smart casual outside of work black shoes? Like black chelseas like these are too formal. I think maybe if the leather wasn't as shiny but still.

It's for use with mostly chinos. Not for sports jackets or wool trousers, but maybe one that wouldn't look out of place there but one that is much more casual think light grey chinos or stone / some kinds of beige chinos + a long sleeve merino wool sweater polo

So what can I do? Horsebit loafers would be too effeminate / formal I think. Possibly pennyloafers too. I prefer my pennyloafers brown desu.

The formal kind of cap-toes? Does that even make any sense?!!?

Or one of those weird minimal leather sneakers?!

It just seems to elevate the formality too much vs brown so what are the middle grounds?

Is there a simple basics guide for this style this general would recommend? I’m generally more of a hoodie/sweatpants guy but I just got hired for an office job so I need to look the part.
>>
>>18693299
I don't have an infographic, but some general guidelines for you.
1) Don't do too much. Everything you add to your outfit carries the risk of detracting from it. Let the cut and color choice speak for itself and do not overload your outfit or clothes with gaudy details.
2) Don't buy an entire wardrobe at once, but also never buy an item in isolation. Instead buy one outfit that you know looks good and enjoy wearing. If you wear it every week and look forward to wearing it then you know this way of dressing is for you and you can expand your wardrobe slowly. To start out you could buy a collared shirt, a fitting pair of pants and shoes.
3) The closer a garment is to your body the lighter it should be both in fabric and in color.
4) Don't wear sport socks when not doing sports. The color of the socks should match the pants or shoes.
5) A dark jacket with light pants is easier to coordinate than the opposite, but both combinations work.
6) Mixing the formality of the different items is very appealing because it can act as a slope to get out of your comfort zone, but it's difficult to pull off.
7) Not every collared shirt is equal. If done right a shirt will look effortless and elevate every outfit
without drawing attention to itself. To achieve this you shouldn't think of a shirt as anything different than a t-shirt of pullover. The fabric of the shirt has to be coordinated with the rest of the outfit. Don't wear a shiny fabric the like popeline with a rough fabric like denim or vice versa. If you want to wear jeans with your shirt you can try oxford weave. A button-down collar can make an oxford shirt even more casual but will also make it more difficult to coordinate with a jacket. Linen is a summer fabric and also inherently casual.
>>
>>18693480
8) When standing with your arms hanging straight down the cuff of your shirt should cover your wrist and end close to the protruding bone close to the palm of your hand. When fully buttoned up the collar should touch the neck without causing any discomfort and tightness. After putting on a shirt raise your arms straight into the air and fold the excess fabric over your waistband. This will give you freedom of movement and make you look less uptight. when tucking in your shirt.
9) For pants almost everything works but they have to fit the rest of the outfit. Choose a high or mid-rise. They should have a firm fit at the waist and buttocks and for the rest of the length fall in a straight, unbroken line to the ground with minimal contact to the body. Slight tapering is ok just don't overdo it. The more casual the pants are the more form fitting they can be without looking stupid. Depending on how much money you have to burn this will either be the most or least difficult to find, because of this you should be willing to compromise on quality. Don't be ashamed to check fast fashion stores. Classic mens outfitters operate on a very slow fashion cycle and many of them have yet to adapt to the renaissance of classic cuts offered in fast fashion. Cut and fit are everything so if you have to just bite the bullet.
10) Buy black or brown shoes. I could write more here but I'm tired of it.

Are you sure it's a sport coat and trousers kind of office? Nowadays people will show up to the office in jeans and a t-shirt more often than not, unless they're in sales. Even so most offices seem to top out at "smart casual" dress code which is sneakers, chinos and a t-shirt or maybe a polo or shirt.

What kind of fit would you recommend for horsebit? I can get behind penny loafers easily, but for some reason tassel loafers always look goofy, even moreso in black. I guess it depends on your style. I assume regular leather? Could suede work? I almost never see suede black shoes since usually black = more formal and suede = less formal, but maybe it could help dress it down, or would it just look ridiculous?

Also don't want the shoes to look too feminine.

Upon reviewing the Rigid Wrangler® Cowboy Cut® Original Fit Jean, we can confirm that it is made of 100% heavyweight cotton with no stretch materials included.

I guess I'll take their word for it and just assume that the elastic was cross contamination from the washing machine or something, as long as I don't find more threads sticking out. I hope they are telling the truth because I like these jeans a lot.

It's probably not 100% cotton. Textile mills can and do mix cheap plastic materials in their supposedly 100% cotton fabrics to increase profits, especially at the low end of the price spectrum. If the brand isn't thorough enough with their QC, which is very likely at this price point because QC costs money, they're probably "unknowingly" selling 100% cotton garments that actually have some polyester or whatever mixed in.

(that is, the guys posting their highrise linen pants, loafers, and sports jackets almost certainly wear peacoats, oxfords, and corduroys) but because the general is so heavily focussed on summer attire, the whole general dies out for 6 month at a time when it's too cold to wear linen.

I think there's be alot more activity if the summers were dominated by tip wearers while the winters were dominated by vintage wearers

i wore an oxford tucked into jeans and some loafers and got asked "do you have an interview? are you going to quit?"

Yeah looks like a high grade linen.

What's the furthest you could reasonably dress down high-rise wool trousers like these?

Obviously you could do a button-down shirt and a long-sleeve polo or a thin turtleneck which would look great, but what about lower?

Tucked-in thin high-gauge merino crewneck?

Can you go lower that that too?
>>
>>18706491
what do you mean by lower? also how is a shirt more casual than a sweater?
>>
>>18706512

lower on the formality scale. I was saying that a non-buttoned top (e.g. crewneck sweater) is *generally* less formal (more casual) than a button-up shirt IMO. Obviously there's a huge variety within a single one of those categories though.

I've tried pairing it with short sleeves (e.g. short sleeve sweater polo) as well but it tends to look odd, but maybe that's just me. e.g. I think >>18701829 looks dumb (or maybe just too retro) but maybe it's just his choice of things.

Linen/cotton trousers, but ones made especially for summer. The fabric is very thin and loose textured and the cut itself is loose. Invisible (loafer) socks, loafers, a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and first one/two buttons unbuttoned.

Literally don't see a problem with it. All of the advice is generally true, albeit somewhat broad. No one is here to spoon feed though.

>get defrauded
>just deal with it
Few people like to fight over trifles, but it's all getting too much because this kind of deceiving marketing is getting normalized. It's a death by a thousand papercuts when it happens literally half the time, I don't care if I buy 20 dollar clothes, after a while it gets infuriating. I paid the money you asked for, I want you to give me what you promised you would give me, simple as.

Brown belt/shoes, tan/khaki pants. What shirt colours are appropriate? I’m thinking polo shirts here.

I tried again and I think knit short sleeve polos can work, but just barely. Anything without a collar (besides turtlenecks) just seemed too incongruent. Even the high-gauge crewnecks were a bit odd, but I think they could work in some situations.

They are cool, but they don't really have a place.

Start a classic menswear general or something, though honestly "suit" these days is as much a figurative 4 letter word as it is literally one.

I watched Singin' in the Rain for the first time not too long ago. And, dang. Old musicals just pin you to your seat with sheer entertainment. And after they're finished my face hurts because I just smiled non-stop for two hours. I never really gave the genre much of a chance. Because of the very gay and daggy reputation they have. But, I'm glad I did. Because I love them.

Hows the blazer fitting me? I think the waist needs to be taken in a bit, sleeves too.

I start grad school at an ivy league in the Fall (no it's not Cornell). I am already getting invited to lawn parties with faculty and students. I don't have a single navy blazer, which I feel I would probably put to use. Do I bite the bullet and get one from jpress or should I go to jcrew or bonobos or something? Or would it be too on the nose?

update: bought a jpress blazer with a discount code

The shoulders look fine (to me a least) which is the most important part and the hardest to change. Maybe it's a tad too long? Not exactly "way too overside" but it does look a bit long, but maybe it's also your proportions making it look longer proportionally since you have narrow shoulders. Curl your fingers and it should just barely touch the bottom whereas this looks like you've got an extra inch or so of fabric there. Try short sizes (e.g. 40s instead of 40r) or regular if it's e.g. 40L. Also hard to tell without a long sleeve shirt but I'm not sure if there would be enough cuff showing.
