Do Japanese people just have higher standards or is this a cultural thing? Because in America I usually get compliments.

The jaoanese tend to mind their own business. It's considered rude to stare at other people. Indians, on the other hand, will stare holes into your soul. There's a cultural clash at play here.

Context. Outside of the US it's very rare to cold approach total strangers and ask them in a date. If you're at a bar or some such place you can approach fine, but at the public transport, a store or on thestreet it's extremely rude to do so. Particulary at the subway.
