Anything up to $500, used or new.
Plenty of great wristwatches with that price ceiling. Especially vintage and Chinese.
Post your scores, your collections, your desired pieces.

If the price doesn't hurt, it not a watch worth having.

After no purchases in a couple weeks and sending back that 36mm Pagani Tudor Ranger homage, I browsed and searched and deliberated and finally pulled the trigger on this baby.
Can’t go wrong with Baltany, and the specs are just perfect. I don’t like the 47mm to 50mm lug to lug you get on a lot of these types. And a smooth, bi-directional ceramic bezel will be a nice new feature in the collection.
I came close to getting the SH Murph for about the same price, but I just can’t live with their logo.
This watch was the one. Probably done buying for a while. Still have a Swatch on the way.
I’ll be waiting a bit and maybe getting something over $500 next.
>>
>>18679858
lol, that’s a ridiculous motto. If the price “hurts” I’m not likely to wear it too casually, am I? Go be a snob in one of the other threads. Unless you meant $500 hurts. In which case: welcome.

My other Baltany. Smallest, thinnest automatic I own. Wearing it to church later.
Gonna drink more tincture. Sermons are more interesting when I'm stoned out of my gourd. Tjankfully I only get dragged to a 'house of the lord' on Easter or for weddings.

Found a oysterquarts/prx homage on amazon ill show it when it comes in about 20 days.

Sekonda makes watches that hark back to their soviet watch roots and are a completely chinese company now. I know ive made a few purchases now but i might pick this one up at some point cus its pretty. Its a design thats supposed to look 1950s. £39.99 right now so biggie.
>>
>>18679886
Gross. You really shouldn’t spend less than $30. Very little any good for $10. Poedagar are surprisingly good for that price, but they still absolutely suck finishing wise. But they keep good time. Too many compromises with ten dollar watches.

Swapping straps to keep things fresh. For a while I was not into steel bracelets but that has changed. Proxima is back “home”. $150 - $200 Chinese watches have really great bracelets. Far better than Seikos of that price. Come to think of it $60 shitters have better bracelets than Seiko 5s come with.

I've learned that when I get multiple clear images and video where I can see and hear the watch wound/running I'm always satisfied with the purchase. And there are so, so many to choose from. Take your time and don't buy if you have any doubts. Scroll down or wait two days and you'll find something you like even more. I got burned on a couple of my first vintage buys. I learned quickly what to look for.

>>18682819
Maybe avoid timex they seem to be the loudest ticking field watches in the world. Id also like to add perhaps a pilots watch may be a bit more formal while keeping the military element. Ive been looking at them the past few days and i think look better perhaps even sexier than field.

Brand recommendations on the board are full of memes and bait. Perhaps just checking your countries regular jewelers and finding something you like, at a fair price vs amazon price would be best. And please be realistic on the size of your wrist, for your desired look to be as you hope it would.

Pretty neat looking at the different culture. All kinda of differences. Like this was considered a womens “occasion” watch known as a cocktail watch. These can be worth quite a bit. Good condition £400 - £500.

If there was a catalogue of sekonda early 90’s designs itd be cool to see how it got modernised and anglicised into the western demographic. There are surviving pieces of course but nobody seems that interested in it as a whole.

I was going through my messages in aliexpress and I came across a whole series of photos from the store I bought my Proxima from. Shortly after I ordered it they'd sent pictures of it from multiple angles and how good the lume is and how it tested on the time grapher.
Pretty cool. I checked and none of the other stores did that.
So while I've already recommended this watch for its quality, I can even more strongly endorse Proxima for going the extra mile with that stuff. It was also only one of 4 places that signed the warranty card.
San Martin sent a print out of the time graph results though, so I know they test the movement before shipping too.
People who bitch about Chinese watches have never bought any in the $200 range. I'm pretty sure they have no experience with them at all. A $200 Chinese watch is at least as good as a $500 watch from anywhere outside of China.
>>
>>18683938
Remember there is no "good" in watches. The best watch objectively is a quartz casio.

A chinese shitter won't get you what you pay for from a swiss brand which is things like brand recognition, the feeling you're connected to some vague history of watchmaking, the feeling of supporting the west over the east etc.

This is a cool Watchdives watch. The upgrade to sapphire is only $11 extra dollars.

Think about that when Seiko or the other "entry level" brands won't give you sapphire at all for under $500 unless it's quartz and even then they usually won't.

$11. Sapphire should just be standard.

So I guess screws coming loose on watch bracelets can happen. Using a winder is only making it worse I'm sure.
I read that people use Loctite to prevent it from happening (I've also read that brands like Versace glue the screws at the factory making it hard to adjust at home), and since my bracelets are all perfectly sized with many having microadjustment capabilities, I figure what the hell.

Has anyone glued their screws or had to use a soldering iron to melt glue and loosen screws? I'm not going to have my watch just fall off like I've read can happen. I tightened all of them in all my bracelets but I don't know how long it takes for them to work free again. I also like to spin the rotors on some watches so I flick my wrist more. I remember thinking it was silly reading about how stuff like playing tennis or golf could affect your watch.
>>
Damn. If you can stand the name Welly Merck, this 42mm automatic watch is less than fifty bucks including shipping. And of course you get sapphire for that.
>>
>>18683973
If you like the design sure go for it. If you're buying it because you're hoping it'll appreciate in value then don't.
>>
>>18684014
No, I don't ever expect anything to appreciate in value. I do expect certain ones to become scarce or go up in price. Like if I'd started collecting watches just 3 years ago I'd have paid 40% less for a lot of the watches I have. You could still find some Seiko 5s for under $100 3 years ago.
Buying watches as an investment is stupid in my opinion. I know I would just lose money on anything I sold. I just wonder if the IXDAO guy from a few months ago is still around.

the name Baltany is a combination of the western owner's names. they base the company in China because of course they do. they just don't lie about it. meanwhile swiss law says your watch can say "swiss" on it if the offices are in Switzerland but the manufacturing is done in china as long as the supervisors are Swiss living in China.
I mean, it's all bullshit. at least the good chink brands are honest

if someone specifically asked for a timex would it be weird to get a tissot instead?
Grandpa wants a watch for his upcoming birthday and want to buy him something.
He wants full stainless steal, a light (do they make that anymore?) I assume today it would have lume.
Also mentioned date + day feature but I think he'd be ok with just day.
So far I'm considering:
TW2Y65000 (not sure he'd like automatic though)
TW2Y25000
TW2Y18300
TW2U78700
Problem is he doesn't want me to spend much money but i really don't mind upgrading to a tissot or a seiko (a couple hundred is irrelevant) he just specifically asked for a timex.
He's an outdoorsman (hunter/camper/fisher + lived in the yukon for half his life) but i don't know if he wants a dress watch or a field watch like the expedition.
I dont want to ask too many questions or i fear he'd know the watch i'd get and i want it to be a surprise.
>>
Leaf watchfags where do you buy your watches?
>>

If looking for a budget/cheap watch just find the watch reference number and google it. You'll find lists of shops that have it and find the cheapest and see sales etc. Also worth going to individual links to see if you can sign up to an email for a 10-15% discount then just unsubscribe after purchasing.
I do this for everything

Get him a Weekender or an Easy Reader.

Grandpas actually DO want Timex. Your extra money will not be appreciated nor will it get him a better watch. Don't get him any automatic. Tissot might even read as pompous to him. He may not know how to pronounce it.

Timex holds more value for a guy his age. Anything "more" would be a disappointment. I have a few really old guys in my life and I know how they think. Trust me. He already told you specifically that he wants the Timex and I'm reinforcing that.

It's your money and often people ignore good advice here so do what you want. But I'm telling you if you want to make him happy get him a very simple Timex. You can still spend $200 on Timex if you really want to though. Not sure grandpa will appreciate it.

I don't think so. I don't have issues with all that stuff. But honestly, out of the entire "Crazy 88" that Proxima is my favorite. I wear it more than any other by far. Wearing it right now. I love everything about it. I don't even favor white dials at all. But I keep reaching for it over everything else. I may buy the green version without the fluted bezel as well. Wish it came in black.
Doesn't appear to be a direct homage of anything specific either. And the PT5000 is a great movement. Very accurate. I put it on all kind of straps before returning it to the bracelet which is very nice and fits perfectly.
>>
>>18687574
Timex has Indiglo which is arguably the best watch light on the market. It may be why he wants one. WAY fucking better than lume.

Stop considering Tissot. Get one for you if you want one but get Gramps a Timex with Indiglo. Best part is you can walk into almost any store that sells watches and find exactly what he'll love for less than $60.

This one here is $40 and my dad wore one like it for most of his 80s. Old guys want practicality and legibility. Timex delivers. And it's a name that holds weight for their generation.

San Martin looks way more expensive than what it is. Most aliexpress brands like Addiesdive, Watchdives, Baltany do too but you don't get the logo. If you want the logo you either go used or fake. Fake rolexes are so good nowadays there's absolutely no chance someone will know without looking very closely, and even then it's hard, but you need to get the right fake.

If any of it wasn't true it'd be exposed by the dozens of watch reviewers who buy shitters ten at a time to tell the viewers how good or how shit they are.
Very few of those companies tout specs they don't deliver on. Not until you get down to the $20 watches, and no one takes those very seriously anyway.
I wouldn't buy a North Edge diver. It's got a 45mm case diameter for one thing, so that's the major compromise there. But it's a quartz watch. There's no reason they can't offer all of that for $60. I have a $60 titanium quartz watch and it's great. I have a $100 titanium automatic and it's great.
You have no good reason to cast doubt. I've seen several videos endorsing North Edge. Even the 'Just One More Watch' guy says they're pretty good for the price. You could just see for yourself, but you won't. You talk shit but you don't care when you're wrong.

This is the *cheap* watch thread. There are plenty of other watch threads you can go be a dick on. You don't get to have an objection to the notion of cheap watches. Not in here.

And no one who buys "diver" watches actually ever goes beyond tourist scuba levels anyway. Most of us just get them wet now and then. So for anyone 200m of "claimed" water resistance is more than enough. You have no reason to suggest that these claims are not true if that is in fact what you're suggesting.
I've seen videos of those reviewers leaving the watches in tanks of carbonated water or simmering them in hot water and they've passed those tests. I'm not going to put any of my watches through any of that and neither are you.
Just accept that you have no argument.

Only a fucking douche would deliberately enter threads on topics he doesn't like to troll the community. Go to the tank thread or hell, make your own new "pompous windbag watchsnobs only" thread and I promise you I won't visit it and post my "shitters".
>>
>>18689185
are the ones on aliexpress legit?
>>
>>18689329
Can't confirm. But I've bought over 50 watches from AliExpress and they've all been "legit". The more you spend the more you get obviously, but from the reviews I've seen of that Triton, it's pretty good for the money if you can handle the size. I've bought a lot of great little watches in the $60 range. Never had a problem with quartz at that price. My Militados and Bernys and Addiesdive and Steelflier VK31 mecha-quartz are all very accurate and cool looking. I've had no issues with them.
The couple I've decided I didn't want for whatever reason were sent back with full refunds, shipping paid by the store. They don't deserve the bad rap they get. Even my six $30-$50 handwind Shanghais keep good time and have been reliable. Time will tell of course, but reviews don't suggest I should be concerned.

I have plenty of non-Chinese watches too of course. I do my research and don't suffer much disappointment with my purchases.
>>
>>18689332
is it really that small
>>
I will say don't buy anything under $5 and expect a whole lot. One of those true shitters didn't work when it showed up and another got water inside and promptly rusted. But I don't even consider those actual purchases. They were $2 watches. I just got a handful for shits and giggles the first time I had a little shitter spree. And the rest of them are still ticking away accurately in the shitter pile box. Loudly, some of them. Which is a pleasing sound I find.
>>
>>18689333
No, big. It's 45.8mm across with a 52mm lug-to-lug.
And I just checked and you can get it for under $50 with coupons. Aliexpress has multiple stores competing with each other sometimes selling the same thing. I'd pay a little more and buy from the true store if you can, but I don't think it even matters. I've bought the cheapest one plenty of times and it was as good as the reviews said.
We know it doesn't cost much to make watches. China does a lot of the work for luxury brands anyway. If you shop around and read up on the watches you buy you're usually going to be happy.
You can always spend more later. I spend more and more each time.

Found it for $82 now. Always double check before pulling the trigger.
>>
I also have been wanting the Autodyne titanium, which is now under $100.
>>
And yet there's this one. All three under $100 with the same movement. That first one, the 50 fathoms-y one doesn't have sapphire though. And the titanium has a 50mm lug-to-lug. This one sure is snazzy.
>>
Then there's this one. They're all so great for the price.
>>
>>18689948
Apparently it's homaging this Spinnaker, which is only $100 more. I finally found that Cadisen for only $75, making it the best deal. Same movement as this one that's $179 on Amazon. Weird, unless they're BOTH homaging a really expensive watch. Anyone heard of Spinnaker before?

Now I don't know what to get. Part of me thinks I really don't need any more sub-$100 Chinese watches no matter how cool they are and what great deals. But like that one guy sings: If watches weren't fun, you'd only need one.
I know I'm going to buy one of them before the night is through.
>>
The Spinnaker is cooler looking though and comes in more colors. The red one is also sweet. And it has a second crown to actually move what appears to be an internal bezel, which I guess is just ornamental on the Cadisen. I hate shit like that. Don't put it on there for looks if it doesn't function.

Gotta keep hunting. I almost made a mistake. And I don't want to mar my perfect track record with a mistake.
>>
$370 for the red one. And it's 42mm. I'm not following the Spinnaker trail any further. It does look nice though.

Someone was asking about red watches and wanted to blow like $500. Here it is.
>>
So weird seeing lineups like this on Amazon. I still want that Cadola but it seems like it'd wear too big. I no longer want a real Murph. Not for over $500, and the ones on ebay I see for that price are suspicious to me.

I so much want to just hang outside of casinos or something and catch desperate gamblers before they sell to some pawn shop that's just going to double the price and sell to the highest bidder. I want to be there with the cash to intercept the deal so there's no fucking markup.

Holy fuck, 78% off.
$169
41mm though and 15mm thick.
But someone should get that. They move fast.

This might be the one.

Well this is weird. Jomashop is still trying to get $300 out of these. I knew it was Duxot or Cadola that had a TV dial for $300 I really wanted.

For whatever reason Amazon has these same ones for $160. JS still claiming they're marked down from their true value of $500.
I'm not going to find a better deal than this one. I would never have paid $300 for it, but I'll pay half.
Good things come to those who wait.

I wish I could buy them all. The Cadola is in the cart but I'm watching some reviews to make sure there's nothing that sucks before I buy it. It's Amazon though so returns are a breeze if I don't love it. And I just checked the Cadola website and they're selling them for the exact same price, so I might get it from them with their warranty.
I might get the tangerine orange instead of the black and yellow.
>>
But I did learn that the clasp on the bracelet sucks, so I'm better off getting the leather.
>>
I love the honeybee 'yacht club black', but this one has those brackets between the 1 and 2 and 4 and 5 so much more pronounced. The black second hand is cool too. Both of them have great contrast and legibility.

I don't currently have any orange watch dials, that's for sure. So maybe that's got me leaning tangerine. That and it comes a day earlier meaning I could start a road trip a day earlier.
I hate to leave town with a nice watch in the mailbox for a few days. Even in my neighborhood where I don't even lock my vehicle doors I'd worry a little. But I refuse to put up security cameras on my house.

>>

On this board full of absolute snobs they call anything under $500 'cheap shitters'. You want a $20 watch thread??
Just can't win apparently.

ANY price range of watches are welcome here. Don't mind the trolls who come here to look down on affordable watches; they don't even wear any!

I specifically chose that watch in the OP to appeal to as many people as possible and have a non-Chinese, "respected" brand in the lower price range, and that means vintage. I'd never pay $450 for it myself.
>>
>>18690214
Shop around. I don't wear much quartz and my solar watches were around $150 (Orient and Citizen), not a lot of water resistance on them either.
There aren't a lot of cheap divers like the North Edge. They sell a solar for $50 that's 42mm, but it's not a deep diver. I'm sure there are options on Amazon in the sub-$100, especially in digital.
>>
>>18690221
When I said reasonable water resistance I meant I want to be able to bathe and swim with it on, I don't really care if it's a diver
>>
>>18690195
Is this supposed to be dissing those guys or something? Jody is a great watch reviewer and from what I've seen their brand is pretty good.

I don't understand the "humor" or insults you terminally-online incels who use words like "wojack" try and fling around. Nor does anyone else. Posting that image doesn't say anything about Erebus at all. You're too retarded to express yourself apparently. Maybe try using words if it's not beyond you to do so.

He demands more options. Take seriously everything he's looking for in his price range, go and take screenshots and provide him a list of options to choose from.
He's dead serious here. He bumped.
But not Erebus. Keep browsing and suggesting other ones for him until he's happy.
He'll reward us all with a purchase and photo post if he approves of one and buys it.

nta but let me explain
>>18690195
this relates to pic rel which is onions chicken wojak meme. it makes fun of pseudo-intellectual, low-test, cringe, loud but harmless neumale who makes majority of reddit community. what's funny here is that your response perfectly matches what that kind of person would type. now you will probably reply with another post that will try so hard to sound smart proving (not my) point.
>>
>>18690240
Did the Erebus guys release that image themselves? It looks like something direct from them.
I'm glad I don't have any idea what you're talking about. "pseudo-intellectual, low-test, cringe" is kind of baseless on an anonymous website, so it's cute that you think you know about people based on their words or images alone.
I'm surprised you're even using so many words. Isn't that 'cringe', or the mark of a man with low testosterone? Real men grunt and don't use punctuation, right? Which is why you did the 'based' thing of not capitalizing. Wouldn't want to be too formal here. Wouldn't want anyone to think you were doing more than just half-seriously posting from your phone. Because 'effort-posting' is so reddit, and trying to be "intellectual", which would mean it's "pseudo"... not really intellectual at all. Because learning is for libs and fags. Which is not based at all.

I hope I've lived up to your expectation. I'm sure you think I'm not actually smart but just trying very hard to look that way. Proving your point, right?

No, I'm not "going back". I'm from 4chan, been here 15 years, never used reddit, never will. Deal with it. I hate you even more than you hate me. But I don't blame you. I'm sure you're a bit younger and you are angry because you didn't get the life I got and you think the world sucks. I kind of does, but you're not helping.

Why would I help some fucking cunt who thinks I'm not even a real person? I'll kill myself the day an "LLM" can make satirical posts that actually make sense like that.

I have three PT5000s. Well, 2 and a PT5004. They are awesome and so is Proxima. The PT5000 is such a high-beat that the sweeping seconds are the smoothest available for automatic anywhere under $1,000. I love just watching the second hand glide.

I suggest both Proxima and Cronos in that price range because they feature lovely enamel dials that look amazing and the PT500X is a very accurate movement. If you can get one for under $200 snag it.

I'm serving the thread, not you.
I may just get that Proxima myself. Though it's the green one I'd most likely buy. I love divers where the bezel is kind of minimal like that. And those are 39mm which is perfect.

My new Certina with the Swiss Powermatic 80 should be arriving in the next couple days.
I was really excited about the power reserve until I learned that it comes at the cost of smooth sweeping seconds. Apparently they're able to double the life of the charge by releasing fewer BPM.
So while it will have a lot going for it, it won't have that 'staring at the seconds hand' thing I love about my PT5000s.
I'm glad I snagged this when I did, as it was sold out when I went back just ten minutes later to look at it some more.
Besides Swatch and some vintages, this will be my first truly new Swiss made watch. I don't really feel comfy swimming in those over-$500 waters. We'll see how much wrist time it actually gets.

No, an AI is not capable of posting what people are, at least not me. Can’t replicate my signature “wit”. Just not possible.
What do you imagine “cope” means? How would that relate to my post? Your lack of understanding would be more indicative of a bot than anything I write.
Or I’m just that out of touch to expect words to match the intended definition.

This has crappy AI voiceovers but some interesting information about these specific shitters and why they are terrible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19755cghH1k

Fascinating how crooked they are.
One of the first moves I made after finding the /fa/ watch community was sending back an MVMT I'd ordered before I even knew to consider case diameter and actual functionality. I didn't know a quartz from a mechanical and one of my earlier purchases was an Invicta, also on the 'blacklist' here.

For all the complete asshats and trolls and snobs here, some decent anons guided me pretty well into the hobby with good information and advice. So thank you to all those people. I've tried to pay it forward tenfold.

I tried to make a little clip to show the smoothness of the seconds but in attempts to make it small enough to post I fucked up the aspect ratio and it looks all squashed. And reducing the frame rate kind of defeated the purpose also. And no matter how many times you wipe and shine your watch there are always dust particles that come back. I really didn't think this place was so dusty. I never sneeze. Not even every other month. In fact I can't remember my last sneeze. Anyway, props to those guys who make closeup videos of watches. It's cool having these phones where you can even attempt it at home, but it didn't really get what I wanted. Probably have more luck during the day when fully rested and invested in setting everything up.
It looks funny like this though. And I shrunk the size way further than I had to. I have 4mb to play with here. I'll keep messing around and see if I can get it right. After I turn a room into a sterile environment you could process microchips in so there won't be dust.
I'm a filmmaker now.
