A lot of people are borderline and developing a personal style can push them over the edge to being attractive. If the same people either don't really live it or get lost in the sauce doing too much, it might end up backfiring and they end up looking worse.So just enough fashion sense might help some people look better.Eg a guy like this, naturally barely average face and body (unless you live in a country with dysgenic men like America) who ascended through being styled and then living the style he was given.
