A fully polyester shirt in 1974 cost $10 (or $70 today)

Because back then polyester was new technology. The 70s were full of plastic slop, but for the most part they tired to make them look and feel as close to natural fabrics as possible.

Polyester was new and cool and interesting back then. It was a "super fabric" and everyone wanted to try it out
Nowadays everyone realizes how terrible it is and no one wants to wear plastic
Not to mention polyester is basically just used to make something for cheaper

Despite the zoomer meme that boomers were rich compared to today consumer goods were more expensive. Houses were hugely cheaper though which compensated for it.

Boomers could afford to buy expensive things because they didn't buy as often in the first place. There was a lot less variety of things to buy to begin with. And the culture itself wasn't as obsessed with mindless consumerism as today. People back then used to take care of their things (it also helped that they were built to last) and use them for as long as possible. Zoomers on the other hand will throw away perfectly good clothes or phones just because there's something new in the market.

boomers grew up with their mean ass victorian grandmother making them iron clothes all day then beating them when they do it wrong.
they wore the slop due to ironing related trauma.

actually it's because the USA destroyed the entire rest of the productive world and the $ was godly in value.
