Not saying shorts need to be at the very top of your thigh either but at least slightly above the knee (like an inch or two minimum but go shorter if it's within your comfort zone).

I think 70s fashion would look weird with long shorts but I also think early 2000s fashion would look weird with short shorts. Also depends on your proportions. If you already have short legs then long shorts won't help you; but if you already have long legs then short shorts won't help you. And then knee-length is just a neutral length which probably works best for average length legs because they don't need to look longer or shorter to look proportionate to the rest of you.
