Holy shit. I actually like Kouros. I understand how it smells like a urinal cake to others but it's soapy to me it feels like a step out of an 80s shower.

They're quite good and worth getting some samples. Blue Talisman is their most iconic frag, good enough to have tons of dupes, but none of them achieve the same depth as the OG. Nobody has managed to dupe their extraits or Babylone line (the smokey bottles), and both of those series exude class and luxury.
Personally, Speed Legends has been my goto this summer, just all around versatility when I can't be assed to choose. Opening has a bit of harsh Lysol cleaner smell at first, but it quickly dries down to a nice crisp citrus, light woodsy scent.

I'd say the main ones to sample are: Blue Talisman (EDP and extrait), Speed Legends, The Hedonist (EDP and extrait), Atlas Fever, Chandigarh Express.

7.5/10 - If we were going purely by the fragrance alone I would rank it 9 or higher, but I can't ignore the fact that there are so many dupes these days that nail down the exact formula - and in some cases riff or improve on it - that buying the OG makes no sense unless you're absolutely flush with cash. Also, personally, this has been my dad's signature frag for at least a decade and I can't smell it without immediately thinking about him, if I wore it, I would feel like I'm stepping on his turf.

9.9/10 - I've only smelled it on a test strip (or card in this case). Opening was alright but nothing mind-blowing. I thought something like, "OK, I can see why people hype this." Then I smelled the card about 3 or 4 hours later and it elicited a verbal reaction. The tea accord especially is so elegant and just "present," I felt it in every corner of my brain. It smells amazing, fairly unique, but at the same time, narrow; I don't know if I could wear this to work, in fact I'm having trouble visualizing any job other than maybe actor or model where you could get away with smelling like this without standing out in a bad way. Strictly a weekend frag. Might falter in the colder months, I don't know. If I had the money to blow I'd spray this daily for the rest of my life, even on days when I'm just sitting at home scrolling Youtube. I might order a decant now that you got me talking about it.

It's actually the Black Bulgarian Man and VPH, I have TdH edt and it's ok but I don't think I'll get another when it runs out. Other 2 is Cool Water and La nuit. BDC was ok but too expensive, it's the problem with a lot of frags I tested - "yeah good" but doesn't justify the price tag.

I'm wearing Leather Oud in 90 degree weather. It totally works. It's sweet cardamon and musky and it doesn't project too much. I'm not saying every heavy fragrance works in summer but I try them all. The ones I have tried so far usually get more muted maybe because they evaporate faster.

Huh, turns out Vulcan Feu is actually good. I normally don't enjoy tropical fruit notes (looking at you, Le Beau) but the mango with ginger is quite nice and refreshing. High quality blend too, which I was skeptical about since French Avenue is shilled way too much, but I'm happy with the frag.

Speaking of songs to frags, there was an anon a few threads back that wanted a frag that smelled like the ending of Coldplay-Warning Sign. I want to thank that anon for reminding that the two first Coldplay albums were dope, actually got me into listening to it again. And I think I have the answer to his question, but it's a personal one now because I've lived a moment like those lyrics while wearing a frag and now that memory is stuck with me forever.

I have tried most of their frags and liked Nord du Nord, Ex Voto and Klubwasser.

NdN is a very herbal, aromatic fresh scent that's fresh in a way I think isn't really suited for summer. Sounds weird but it smells glacial with a faint underlying sweetness that I think is a better fit for more moderate if not cool temperatures. Green and woody but also warming in a way. Could be a spa scent I think. Interesting but very linear and with poor performance.

Ex Voto is the one I've been thinking about the most in recent years, coming back to it again and again but I just can't pull the trigger. The poor performance again paired with the steep price is just too much, but I think the scent itself is wonderful. Smoky incense of the delicate variety with some soft spicyness and woods in there. A bit green, a bit aromatic. The chamomile makes this a gentle aura scent. A truly beautiful frag.

Klubwasser is intensely green. Like taking a bunch of green plant stems and crushing them in your hands until the sap is all over your hands. At first it was offputting to me. Bitter and far too green. But I gave myself time to let my nose learn and as it settled down it turned into something really nice. And in the air it smelled extremely compelling.

Their frags are eclectic and distinct, even peculiar in a sense. I am not ready or willing to wear such frags and prefer to keep it simple. I am happy just smelling nice with basic scents. I don't have to become a walking olfactory experience for the people around me, but I can definitely see the draw when it comes to higher quality niche frags.

I was under the impression an unsweet and unsettling lactonic would be rather easy to find immediately. :')

I’m starting to get bored of mainstream (westernized) Arabian brands. I spent $400 on a variety in the last month and they are all duping the same things, or each other. Starting to smell alike even when they’re not, too. Had a good run, enjoy what I’ve previously bought that still feels original. I’m probably going to stick to vintage and samples from now on.


A lot of TikTok influencers I used to love have taken too many brand deals and their bias shows, rarely dents in their new bottles to give an honest review, same new release fragrance is being reviewed by all the popular accounts before any regular Joe even has access. Clearly paid. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing IF the influencer is selective and only reviews IF the scent aligns with their values and/or taste. Too much cohesion, not enough curation between influencers makes them loose credibility. The same fragrance can’t be good to everyone at the same time, multiple releases in a row, from the same brand.

I loved Daniel Rene, but his reaction to a follower in a live about politics (Palestine), stating he chose to not get involved, now regularly mentioning Target & Starbucks (going bad for being pro IDF), and a new frag brand from The Rock? (Begging for Maui donations with Oprah at a suspect time when celebrities were building property out there against locals’ wishes). Fucking sell out. Hope those cheap vinyl Geiger bags were worth the death of 70k kids. You think someone touched by the elite would have some empathy.

It’s respected for its history, like Caron, but in either case its recent output has been pretty mediocre.
They’ve put out a couple of interesting private collection and/or limited compositions that were decent-to-really-good, but in terms of pillars, it’s been a while and nothing was truly groundbreaking.

Mon Guerlain is an excellently blended remix of basically everything Guerlain has ever done.
La Petite Robe Noire was an excellent fruitchouli but it only came out well after the trend was established.

On the men’s side, L’Homme Idéal was fairly unique and on-trend for 2014 but, again, it was just … fine.

Then you go back and sample the stuff they used to put out and you realize, ok yeah, they get a pass. They can ride Mitsouko forever as far as I’m concerned.

It got bought by LVMH and turned into a zombie brand so people think because it's old that it's good. As one of the few survivors its history is used to prop up the brand when it was always second tier when compared to Patou, Coty, Chanel, etc. Their most popular fragrance is inspired by India so the whole country idolizes the brand.

I think companies that have a clear vision of what they want to be and are able to adapt that vision to the times do the best.
Chanel is the exemplar of this: they never make anything groundbreaking. They sit back and take a minute to thoughtfully examine the current trends, see if it’s real or a flash in the pan, then create a truly excellent version of the trend.

In terms of favorites, I don’t automatically love any specific brand or even perfumer, I take each work as it comes. I don’t like to fall into the trap of “oh, this is Olivier Polge, he always hits a homer.”

LHI can be considered a pillar. And it’s certainly been successful in Europe. I don’t know how successful it is in North America. Guerlain seems to be perceived as primarily a women’s brand in the US, as far as I can tell.

I hate shills but I hate beggars even more. He's always dropping hints when brands do and don't give him free stuff. He also glazes perfumers so they do interviews for him. Went to a local stockist today because they got in the new Maison Margiela's yesterday. Horrifying price tag at $350 a bottle, but I would be lying if I said that every single one of them wasn't very nice.

That doesn't stop them from being well made and pleasant scents. Just not $350 a fucking bottle. If someone starts to dump their collection in a few years and their among them, I will certainly go grab whatever I find. After failing to sell unwanted blind buy frags, I decided to fuck it and go beastmode on them, spraying it on myself while I'm home. Some are almost starting to feel not so bad

My case of Schizo Jew frags came in. No projection, but they smell almost spot on to what they’re duping until they dry down. For $5~ a piece I’m actually impressed. They’re good gifts for someone young or just likes personal skin scents. I feel bad now, he barely gets bids. Thought I’d be getting pure alcohol. The packaging is a bit Family Dollar in ‘05 ghetto.

Antaeus still comes off as mossy to me in the current bottle. Did they lower the oakmoss to compliant levels, or are they perhaps using a synthetic substitute?

The Parfum is basically a slightly stronger but much sweeter version of the orignal PuH.

Le Soir is nothing like PuH, but builds off the classic lavender-vanilla-musk character of the original and turns it into a woody aromatic. I personally don't like it because it's got a big orris note and a very synthetic-smelling oak.

Best to just stick with the original PuH eau de toilette and learn to live with its so-so performance.

Speaking of JPG, Habik for Men came in. Dupe of pic rel (that bottle color is pure sex). It’s a little rough/synthetic, needs time to sit, but overall fantastic buy. I sprayed it early in the morning and I’m still catching whiffs that make me go, “Woah, that’s me?” Intense, but not overbearing. Works well in SoCal high heat. Similar to Gentleman’s Society Extreme I just ran out of this morning. Couldn’t have come at a better time.
