Posted this in the old thread but posting again here.

Hey guys, I am considering getting a watch for my dad for Christmas and am starting to shop around. I'm between a few watches right now and would like to know what /wt/ thinks about some of my choices. Currently I'm between the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 39, the Seiko Alpinist GMT, and the new Tudor North Flag.

My dad is not a big watch guy, though he did daily drive a gold datejust for many years before putting it up in the safe, he wears an Apple Watch now, mostly because he felt that the Rolex was too expensive and did not want to risk getting robbed or damaging it. I like the GMT complication for him because I think it's something he would appreciate as he travels often for work. Other than that, he's big into fly fishing and is a generally outdoorsy sort of guy. I want to get him something from a mainstream brand that he'll recognize, and it should be able to be worn with a suit / dressed up a bit in a pinch. It also shouldn't be too expensive, because I think it would make him nervous to wear it. What do you guys think I should go with? Other watch recs are welcome as well.

DLC coating is less pure so it's understandable why rolex will never touch it, but still cool
>>
>>18763724
I'm sure in 20 years when the technology becomes common and safe Rolex will come up with "Rolesamic" or some shit and start producing ceramic cases and bracelets.
>>
>>18763728
Nigga it's not ceramic it's DLC coating
ceramic on the other hand, I have no doubt they will start at some point.
But when you coat/plate a watch you can't really refinish it, you have to remove the coating to repolish and that's why I don't think they will ever do this.

>>
>>18763730
Ceramic is better than DLC, n-word. Rolex for the last 70 or so years has been in the process of making watches that don't age, DLC fading, scuffing and chipping away over time is the opposite of what they want.

Don't buy a watch as a gift. You will almost certainly fail to get the right watch. You are buying what YOU think he will likenot what he likes. Here's how you avoid buying him the wrong watch: you give him a budget and you take him watch shopping. Let him choose the watch.

thanks!
it's an early Valjoux 7750 caliber, one of the earlier versions with 17 jewels
it only has a date complication, unlike the subsequent versions where you'd have day-date in the 3 hour position
the seconds hand of the chronograph, in the center, glides smoothly at 28,800 vph (4Hz), and the difference is noticeable when compared to my other automatic which operates at 21,600 vph (3Hz)
since it's one of the earlier versions I suppose it was made around 1974 and mid-80s when they updated the caliber to 25 jewels and added a day-date dial
all I could find were a couple other watches from the same Pierre Chatelain brand for sale but not much more than that
it also states it's Swiss made on the back

The common claim about white dial watches not being as versatile is 100% true. I've owned the white dial speedmaster and experienced quite a bit. It works 90% of the time, but when it doesn't, it sticks out like an eye sore and it will be noticeable to you even if it's something you normally don't pay attention to.

Black dials became the defacto standard for a reason. If you're going to be spending that kind of dough on watches, you better be sure you're comfortable with it day in day out.

How much does your family usually spend on each other at Christmas? The cheapest of those three watches is over a grand, the Tudor is like 5k lol. That seems like a shit load of money to spend on something you're not even sure he'll like, let alone use.

Of the watches you mentioned, I personally like the Zulu time the best. I think it's the most unique of the three and Longines is doing good stuff right now at reasonable price points. The Seiko Alpinist is also a cool watch and while I know it costs $1200 I fear a Seiko may read as cheap to someone who used to daily a Rolex. Unless you're loaded and you can spend that amount without feeling it, then I wouldn't go with the Tudor just because that feels like way too much money to spend on a gift if you're not certain he'll love it. Just my 2 cents.

This is like an upper-middle class cope; they don't practice it but they learnt to say it in ear-shot.

$1500-$2500 is the worst price point for a new "watch". Besides being 100% markup, Its decidedly "entry level"; by definition, and basically represents the first "security" payment you make to your AD. You're basically bending over and accepting their business model and self focused "world view" in exchange for a clock.
>>
>>18764131
I only cared about the dive aesthetic since I was actually stationed on a sub.
I don't know what a silicone hairspring is, I just want it to tell time and look normal.

There are a few pic related going for like 350USD on ebay right now. Timex looks less lame/showoffy than something made for rich people. Also considered the Unimatic watches, some of them look nice.
>>
>>18764152
I've watched the video. Its 12 minuets of a guy saying nothing.

An entry level watch starts at 2500k and a real luxury watch starts around 10k. I like some tag hauer and those can be 6 or 7k.

Beyond that watches get crazy like a gold Rolexfor something. ill probably never have something like that as its beyond my price range but I'd surely be happy with a stainless oomooga or Roleox and no.. this isnt snobby.

If you're a brainlet, I guess. It's commentary on the evolution of the perception of wealth, in the context of watches.

Most of /wt/ would benefit from it, except you of course, since you know everything.
>>
i know there are a million memes about it, but what is the actual reality of walking into an AD and asking if you can buy a rolex?

do they really just put you on some list and never call back or tell you outright you need to buy other watches from them first?
>>
>>18764175
wtf is this shit ain't nobody buying this
>>
>>18764171
>stationed on a sub.
>showing a speed watch
>worried about showing off wealth

Theres several things wrong with your statements. Firstly, the timex is a race inspired watch. Its chronograph complications function as a stop watch.
Sometimes doctors and pilots also like speed watches. The stopwatch is useful for measuring heart rate and for pilots the stop watch can help to measure distances.
Also for racers, the tachymeter scale on the bezel can measure the speed of racecars. Speed watches are often worn by dudes who like to drive high performance cars.
Since, youre more of a mariner type an dive style watch better suits your occupation. I like the sort of watch called skin-diver. Its has an exposed crown and it really only meant for snorkeling as it has lower water resistance. Typically the built has less heft to it.

Pic'd is a long jeans water conquest. Its pretty popular. That is a full on dive watch. It looks similar to a Rolex submarine but Its different enough that it should ve confused with one, especially this blue dial or the 39mm. A silicone hairspring its just something which goes into premium movements and makes its movement completely immune to magnetic interference.

>the actual reality of walking into an AD and asking if you can buy a rolex?
They tell you they can "register your interest", take your ID (seriously), put your info into whatever database on their tablet, hand you a business card and say "that's the number we'll contact you from", and if you ask they'll say they have no idea when that might be.
>>
>>18764188
is the AD ghosting you forever a common outcome or do they actually get to you at some point? is it months or years before they contact you?
>>
>>18764175

>>
>>18764188
Once I bought at new unworn Rolex for my wife. I had ti buy greymarket and pay out the ass for it well above msrp. This is really the most efficient way to just get the Rolex you want immediately. You simply must say fuck it. That AD nonsense is something id prefer to avoid.
>>
>>18764189
Idk. I "registered my interest" at on back in February and haven't heard anything so I went to another one a couple months back and haven't heard anything there either. I just want a med blue dial 36mm OP.
>>
>>18764191
I'd rather just not have one than pay thousands above msrp. I'm not gonna kiss ass or "build a relationship" with an AD either lol.
There are plenty of nice watches out there, if I decide it's time for me to buy one and they haven't called me I'll just get something else.
>>
>>18764189
It depends on the dealer. Bigger dealers like Bucherer generally seem much more interested in actually selling people watches so usually they'll get back to you in a reasonable time frame, but if you don't live in a major city it might be a little bit of a drive for you to visit one of those stores. Smaller, maybe family owned local Jewelers can be really tight fisted because a lot of them just want to use the Rolex vrand as a carrot on a stick to try to sell other shit they're trying to get rid of in the store. That's where the "why don't you buy your wife a bracelet, maybe buy her a ladies watch, and we'll see if we can get that submariner in the meantime" bullshit comes from.

That's how it worked for me, I have a local jeweler very close by my house that strung me along for years, and I even bought my wife a pearl necklace from them for Christmas (not trying to get a watch, I genuinely needed pearls and they had the best options.) I wasn't even asking for hype shit, I just wanted a 36mm datejust. I finally went to a Bucherer about 2 hours away and they got me a datejust in the exact configuration I wanted in I think 8 months? And that was after calling me in about 4 months for an explorer which I said no to. So sometimes "the game" is just finding someone interested in selling watches. It's not really even the brand's fault, they set quotas and stuff for how many watches they sell but they ultimately don't have a lot of control over how the dealers use the brand and who gets what watches.
>>
>>18764179
I did that and it was like >>18764188 described

I really like this rado. Irs sorta overpriced for what they give you but I may get this anyway. I know.. I know. Its the Rolex of India and Pakistan. They charge too much. The movement isnt good enough. The bezel lacks minuet markers.. personally I dont like minuet markers around the entire bezel anyway. If there's going to be minuet makrers on the bezel I like on the 1/4 mineut marker bezel look. This rado has none.

That particular configuration is one of the new ones.. its called blue to black dial. It only comes on rubber strap and 39mm. I hope the 39mm doesn't wear too small on me. I have 7.25" wrist. I know I can wear all the way up to 44mm as long as its thin eough.

>>
>>18764218

>>
>>18764231
Eh, if you want a specific watch in a certain configuration you have to wait until one comes in. Like I said, they called me for an explorer in about 4 months, and I mostly turned it down because I was traveling and getting married that same week and I wanted to hold onto the money for a bit longer, otherwise I like that watch too and there's only one configuration. They either have it or they don't.

Actually that's the biggest annoyance about the wait lists - they don't just sell you the watch when you ask for it and have plenty of money, they wait to call after you've just bought a new car or put a new roof on your house or you're planning 2 weeks in asia or some shit.
>>
>>18764228
Yes. I was trolling. But I still didnt like that guys video. The first thing he does is make his imaginary opponents arguments for them before he begins his tactical take down. Thats just gas lighting. He doesn't actually say anything helpful. I didnt like that supposedly cheaper than Rolex hand made watch he was showing. But maybe someone else would like that. He misses a few key things. People buy luxury brands for prestige. No one actually gives too much of a shit if it was made with machines or not. The prestige is often but not always reflected through its cost. This YouTube dismisses the type of people who buy these watches as "watch snobs". Maybe that's true. Maybe theyre also just impressive people who decided to buy a rolex. That can go either way. The moment you start arguing in absolutes is the moment your argument goes to shit. Argue about politics with any normie or communist type lefty. They talk kinda like this watch YouTube. Its all gaslighting and no substance.
>>
>>18764236
It's not gaslighting. I think most people agree with him, making you the contrarian.
>>
>>18764170
It's only like that if you actually don't like the watch and you're buying it just to stay in the running for another watch. I genuinely have been considering getting a divers date because I like smaller watches and I already have the rolex I want so currying favor with the store doesn't help me anymore.

The problem with oris is one day they'll suddenly do an upgrade to a watch that it always should have had in the first place and the store will be stuck with toxic sludge old versions desperately trying to peddle them for full MSRP and may not even order the new ones until some retards buy the old shit.

$1500 to $2500 really is fine for a lot of people man. If there's a watch that you like and it cost 2500 then so what? What is the problem?

I dont understand your counter argument? Is your argument that you think people should spend more or less on a watch?

My argument is about how much you should spend on a watch. A good starter eatch could be 1.5k. to 2.5k. A more for serious luxury watch is around 10k.
Beyond that there's crazy expensive stuff.

Your argument isnt complete. Of course you can spend much less on your less and enjoy it greatly. What are you trying to say?

The issue with $2k watches is they're in a really difficult spot where it's difficult to find much they've done better than $1k watches and if you just save up another $1k or so you can get a watch thatnis both appreciably better and probably has a name with some historical provinance that people will recognize. Like Oris is a historical and significant independent watchmaker, but only watch nerds know it, and their watches are simultaneously not that much better than a brand like mido or Hamilton but at the same time not as good as longines or tudor or omega.

Omega WAS Omega. Same with most of the other old famous brand under swatch's corporate umbrella. Today Swatch treats all of its brands like rungs on a ladder for watch enthusiasts to climb. When they were independent brands they were all competitors in the same market, but now Hamilton and tisso are for noobs, longines and omega are for middle managers, glasutte is for.... Hipsters that don't want a swiss watch like everyone else but are not rich enough to buy a lange?

Maybe that's changing a little bit because Longines had been kind of allowed out outshine omega for the last few years. We'll see.

Longines is making overall better watches though right now. Their catalogue is much stronger and more varied and not just 700 speedmasters and seamasters. They have the "in house" movements, their watches are thinner with better proportions, they've been doing call backs to vintage pieces with actual period correct proportions rather than making everything bloated thick 40mm shitters. They jave one of the most attainable and comfortable flyback chronographs on the market. Longines is kind of killing it, honestly. Even their options for womens watches are better, my wife wants a longines.

Longines just has boring design and lackluster finishing. None of them are interesting whatsoever, they literally just look like "watches" as if you had AI morph all watches from a category together into their average. They have no character or soul as a brand. If they didn't have the name on them, you wouldn't know what any of them were. That's not the case for Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Blancpain, GS, IWC, Cartier, or most other luxury brands.

To consider Omega specifically, you claim that Longines has a stronger catalog because they're more varied. That's not that makes a catalog strong. That's like saying your local diner is better than an actual fine dining restaurant because the menu is bigger and they have an example of everything. What actually makes a catalog strong is recognizability, creativity, uniqueness, and character. Plus the details and finishing which you can only see in person, not in photos, which Omega has and Longines lacks.

Here's a basic example to help you understand. One of these watches is instantly recognizable and the other one might be a San Martin. They're not really comparable.
>>
>>18764404
Kid, I am not paying $7k for a time only watch that's 42mm diameter and damn near 14mm thick. It's not fucking happening. Omega has completely lost the plot for the last 2 decades.

>>18764410
I don't have any watches over $1200, but still, all of my watches are visually distinct and unique. I wouldn't buy a watch that looks like a San Martin whether it was $300 or $3000.

I actually WAS going to buy a Spirit Pilot because, I assume much like you, I spend a long time autistically reading about specs, and I came to the conclusion that Longines offers the best value for the price. I became convinced, based only on reading facts, that Longines watches were the best. But when I went to the Watches of Switzerland store, and looked at the Longines display, my entire desire for them was shattered. They are so utterly boring that I'd never spend any amount of money on one.

You can't change my mind with cherrypicked images of young boys wearing gigantic watches because my opinion is fundamentally informed by real life experiences, and yours isn't. I actually looked at Longines and Omega watches in real life, and you didn't. I know you didn't, because thinking Omega is too thick and thinking Longines are great because of the "specs" are both opinions that you can only get by reading about watches online and never having looked at them.

Everyone on earth who has ever looked at Omega and Longines side by side at a store knows that this is true. Longines is a Reddit watch because they only appeal to people who shop by specs and buy online.
>>
>>18764432

I'm not cherry picking shit, these are the side view pictures google images is showing me. I've tried the entire lineup of both brands on in stores. They are not competitive with their peers or even lower brands in design and proportion.

Omega bought into two things - the 'wrist presence' of the 90s-2010s and the co-axial that originally needed a thicker allowance compared to the usual thin ETA movements Omega was throwing into their Seamasters. While Omega can produce thin cases, they rarely do right now due to the lag.

There is a give-and-take however: all of the co-axials I've tested are essentially 'unbreakable' in terms of daily rate vs. the older ETA adjusted-by-Omega movements, but you get thicker cases as a result. Do you want accuracy that is unstoppable? With Omega, thickness is the result.

>pic related - I love the design, the thinness, etc...but it winds inefficiently and has all of the problems the Omega 1120 always had...

Citizen is better than Seiko. Like every scientist worth their salt, I'll re-evaluate my determination if/when Seiko presents me with a watch movement more accurate than the 0100, cased in a design as beautiful and aesthetically cohesive and consistent as their original release.

Get a Rolex OP; you'll save money. I have nothing against the Aqua Terra - it's an excellent watch for what it can do. Usually an Aqua Terra buyer is one who is unsure about spending money on an OP, and wants something that differentiates themselves from the crowd. In terms of performance, the two are equal, but in terms of resale, status, and overall versatility, the Rolex OP is a better option if you're going to spend the money.

Good luck.

Disagree. The new Planet Ocean is astonishing, and worth buying if you don't have something in that category of capability. The new Speedmaster (i.e. 3861) fixed ALL of the problems and complaints of the old one. The new Constellation is goonmax in person, especially in Moonshine Gold. Your statements are false, and your conclusions are onions.

Always determine function first, then you can adjust the colours. If you go 'sporty', more colours are available. If you go formal, a nice mahogany would look amazing. What's the function?

Are two tone watches a cope?

>>18764508
Yes. It's cheaper than full gold, but 'try-hard' more expensive than pure stainless steel. It'll never escape the 'parking-attendant' tier, so avoid like broccoli-hair.
>>
>>18764509
Pretty much the only daytona option the AD said can be had within a year. But in the back of my mind all I think about is that it’s a cope. Because I’ve seen this watch go for below MSRP so there’s a bunch of people willing to let it go at a huge loss.

Why is two tone Datejust not a cope though? Is it because of the Bateman?
>>

The two-tone Datejust is a cope; they're all cope. Two-tone indicates a few things:
1) you can't afford full gold
2) you want people to think you can afford 'some' gold leading to 3)
3) you are worried that people think you're poor.

Do a search on Chrono24 for two-tone - you'll see lots of models that are well engineered but with basement prices because of this status-driven pricing. Of course your Rolex AD said that the two-tone Daytona could be had in a year...it's the least desirable version.

The influence of Bateman is minuscule, as most people today have no idea what you're referencing; remove it from your calculus. If you have money to burn, do a full gold Datona. If you want status, buy a stainless steel off grey market and flex as if you got it from the AD at retail, no one will know.

Two-tone only has status in Greece and Bosnia.

Good to see you as well, Omega Chad.
The Citizen is running within spec, it has lost nearly 3 seconds in a year. How's yours?
Any new timepieces to grace your collection?
>>
>>18764511
Damn, paying 3x MSRP is a tough ask for me and the Oysterflex has only a minuscule more gold than the two tone. So even that is a cope. The only two none copes is the SS or the John Mayer.
>>
>>18764511

Consider also why no watch reviewer talks about whether or not a watch is 'ugly'. Once you understand this, you won't need an explanation why two-tone is a disgusting cope for people who have no idea what they want in life.

>>18764513
Good to see you too, CitizenChad. Mine is running as it always has...almost -1 per year. Yes, two new time-pieces, but no pics yet due to lack of time. Are you keeping in good health?

>>18764515
Out of the two, get the SS Daytona and call it a day. Do NOT measure it against MSRP - that's not the real value. All watches are valued on the open market, like diamonds (notice the resale value of diamonds plummets...it should give you an idea of how 'valuable' they truly are).

If a SS Daytona is worth 31k on the open market, then that's what it's worth. When I last checked in with my AD, it would have taken a purchase of an OP, precious metal piece (she tried Datejust), and a Submariner or GMTII before I'd be allotted a SS Daytona. Add it up, and it's more than the open market SS Daytona outright, and I don't want all of the baggage.

There comes a point where you see the seller for what they are...grifters.

You're unlucky - I haven't encountered that yet at my AD. They even have a normal 'fair' waiting list for the Ed White, though they'll tell me behind closed doors that the production is so slow that I'd be waiting 3 years at least. No, you shouldn't have to buy an AT before a white dial Speedy - if you do, find a better AD, as it's not normal Omega policy. For the past 4 years at least, they've internally attempted to be the 'anti-Rolex' when it comes to allocation, and they've succeeded to a general degree. If you have an AD who sells Omega that does the Rolex thing, abandon them post-haste, as it's not standard policy.

When I was in my AD last week, they had 2 white dials available immediately. It may have been difficult to get upon release, but now it should be okay....

>>18764524
Agreed on these points - the only reason I disagree in general is because the vast majority of people no longer wear jewellery the way they used to. Matching is irrelevant now, as we are post-post-modernist in terms of design, fashion, and inception.

Do you know the old rules about matching leather colours? (i.e. brown leather belt with brown leather shoes with brown leather watch strap?) - that's dead now and not followed unless you're old money or trying to look like old money. Same goes with matching metals - we're now in Belle Epoque Paris where the combination is where in intrigue and 'individuality' lies....stainless steel glasses with gold signet ring with black diamond necklace...etc. Modernize your expectations, and buy what you love.

>>18764525
Lots of men wear jewellery, myself included. Necklaces, rings, torques, etc, but it's all specific and dependent upon the circumstance. After all, one cannot go naked, can one?

It's not accurate, it makes the same mistake everyone else makes of only showing a watch head on and it doesn't tell the actual story of the proportions and how the watch wears.
