I really enjoy the colorway and design language of that watch. If it had a bezel I wouldn't want any "back play" on it.

In the last week I've seen three different watch reviewers oddly use the word "proud" to describe something sitting higher or apart from the watch. What the fuck is this stupid trend?

They saw that the middle of the market (Breitling, Omega, etc) was being hollowed out, so they want to join the upper echelon where buyers stop caring so much about value and buy more on feelings.

Lads, I am after a new watch. I have a Tudor Pelagos 39, a few vintage Seikos and have owned a fair amount of watches over the years.

I think I want an either a Rolex explorer or explorer 2. A 16570 explorer 2 with a white dial or 124270 explorer, which is the current model 36mm.

What one would you pick? I don’t mind smaller sized watches, have the money to afford it, 30 years old, usually dress casually for work and personal life. Like the white dial explorer because of how different it is to my current Tudor, like the original explorer because of its small size and classic look
>>
>>18786299
I mean that just means everyone except the rich Chinese "businessmen" will wear random fashion watches and never actually get into any other watch type. I understand that this is how everything is going nowadays but it's very stupid.
>>
>>18786293
It's one of those "we confiscated this from the local drug dealer/counterfeit watch seller" police photos.
>>
>>18786305
Ok? Go ask your life coach or pay me to think for you.
>>
>>18786309
What one would you personally pick big fella? I asked a question.

My life coach Randy won’t see me anymore
>>
>>18786305
Neither. Get a 14270 or 114270 Explorer I. (depending on whether you want a tritium dial or not, or solid bracelet endlinks)

The current 36mm Explorer I is shit. They changed the bracelet from 20mm to 19mm, and the watch itself is listed at 36mm but it's actually 35mm. It's just a single millimeter, but it changes the stance of the watch so much. The old watch looked like a man's watch from a past era. The current watch looks like a women's watch for a girl who likes bigger watches.
>>
>>18786305
You really need to see them in person before committing.
If I wanted a contrast to a Pelagos I'd get a DJ or Skyflake
>>
>>18786312
Wouldn’t mind solid end links. I will take this on board, I don’t have an issues with the size of watches, smaller the better for my personal taste.

I do enjoy speedmasters, but it is a very similar look to a Tudor Pelagos; albeit functionally very different. Figured either explorers were a good option.
>>
>>18786305
Like the other anon said, when it comes to Rolex, a single millimeter can mean a lot. The feeling of the watch on the wrist is completely different between the older models and those of today.

I own a 114270 and I'll never sell it, it's the greatest "gada watch ever made in my opinion.

I should have bought that 36mm Zeppelin open heart with the Miyota 9205 for $250 when I had the chance.

Early Christmas gift I'm telling myself. The only thing I don't 100% like about it is the fluted bezel. It just makes it almost too dressy for everyday wear. Or does it?
Maybe I could grind it down and brush it or fill it in with Bondo. haha

I have the Explorer 36, but:
1 It's a basic bitch watch, which i like, i didn't want a Rolex to be "in your face". I wear it very casually, even for traveling, very lowkey.
2 I'm a wristlet (16.5cm)
3 It's a watch that will NEVER be out of style, so i will keep it till i die.

The Explorer 2 is different on all points. It's more out there and more mature. It's a more of a statement.

>And Glashutte Original, the supposed cope version of the ALS

It's even dumber and more complicated than that. GO basically is old ALS. nu-ALS is a company made up from whole cloth.

ALS and a couple other brands (ALS was by far the biggest of them) were combined into one company called GUB and nationalized by the East Germans. They kept operating after the Wall fell, in 1994 the company changed its name to GlashĂĽtte Original, then in 2000 they were bought by Swatch.

nu-ALS came about when a guy named GĂĽnter BlĂĽmlein bought the old ALS trademarks and founded a new company. He had previously worked with IWC and JLC. To add legitimacy to this new company, he dug up one of the original Lange descendants to act as the figurehead.

So GO should be ALS.
ALS should be BlĂĽmlein.

the new g-shock looks really sexy
>>
>>18786671
One of the nice things about G-Shocks (and Casios more broadly) is the sheer number of features they include in otherwise simple watches.
Their alarm and world-timer functions make them extremely useful as travel watches.

The new one only has a stopwatch, the least useful complication (I don't care how many steaks some millennial caricature of himself claims to time.)
Even the countdown timer is more useful than the stopwatch.
The LED is also very weak and the way it's positioned between two indices means the watch is not very legible in the dark.

Casio and some G-shocks seem to have horrible quality control.
On my Casioak, the lume is applied unevenly on the thick hands. You can actually see how it's weaker in some parts of the same hand.
My digital G-shock is fine. Although it's display contains a hidden bluetooth icon, even though my particular model doesn't have bluetooth.

As tough as G-shocks are against the world, a simple strap change can prove to be damaging. Metal spring bars vs the plastic lugs... it really doesn't take much to make a piece of plastic brake off.
On a stainless steel watch, you can be a complete gorilla and scratch your watch while changing the bracelet, the lugs will still remain functional. One mistake on a G-shock and it's over.

The spring drives are not too bad, they'll retain a fair amount of value. The problem will be selling it.

I've sold many watches in my day and it usually takes me 3 or 4 times as long to unload any Grand Seiko. And if you care about resell value, stay away from their automatics / 9S caliber. They're great watches but people expect you to resell them for pennies on the dollar. It's ridiculous.

Really long, autistic story short, their watches used to be really good value for what they were because they knew where to cut corners to keep costs down and at the prices they were asking people were satisfied. Today they're cutting most of the same corners but prices have gone through the roof relatively speaking compared to where they were even accounting for inflation.

I'd had my eye on them for a long time but always found something I liked more. Then I saw one offered for $100 which is at least $40 cheaper than the best AliExpress deal so I got it.
The video reviews all say it's great. The only compromise is a mineral crystal. But when I remember that I never wear the same watch long enough to accumulate scratches I will sometimes allow myself to forgo the sapphire. I'm not a big dive watch guy. This will be my third or fourth total.
I like this bronze one too but not for twice the price.

And this.
All their automatics under $350 come with 7S26, which doesn't have hacking or handwinding. You have to shake it to start it and can never get it exactly on time.
Meanwhile Chinese brands costing half the price give you a Seiko NH movement and all the good specs Seiko denies us.

You'd have to REALLY love their designs to settle for all of those shortcomings.
I've spend over $700 on Seikos anyway though. You just have to know going in you're compromising a lot for the look.

I got into watches last year and these are my findings:

>anything over 200 bucks becomes something you care about too much when out and about. not good when your weekends consist of getting dodgy in dodgy places (same principle for earbuds, phones, etc)
>automatic watches are cool but too much faff when you leave NEETdom and just want to grab a watch in your half-dead, pre-work, morning state
>if you want to stick your peepee into the concept of time and cool mechanics, mechanical/wind-up watches give you way more of a tactile thrill than automatics
>sperging out over movements etc is lame unless you get a particularly potent thrill out of it, otherwise just be a crow and own getting hard over shiny baubles, cool dials, etc
>mostly no one cares about your watch other than other watchbros, who are usually older dudes and unfortunately aren't hot femboys/twinks
>conversely, hot women/femboys that notice are automatically elevated because they pay attention to details
>vostok/soviet watches in general are your best bet if you're poor and masturbate over in-house movements, watches with history, or are after dirt cheap space watches
>date functions are totally useless but dive bezels/chrono timers are genuinely useful

t. stater of obvious truths
>>
>>18787396
How to discern a good seller?
>>
>>18787402
The date function is legit the reason why my vostok sits around too much. If it's the 27th and my date is on the 5th I'm just going to wait until it's the 5th or after to put it on again. I am not winding the hour hand between midnight and nine 22 times.
>>
>>18787415
That's not proper question form. You were raised online, weren't you?
>>
>>18787425
You don't have to do that. Just move the date up to the day before and then advance the time until the day changes to the current day and bring it up to current time.
>>
>>18787429
Someone's never had a vostok. Moving up the date? On a movement designed in the soviet era? Lol, lmao even.
>>
>>18787425
>>18787430
This is why I specifically go after Vostoks with no date movements.
Also fun fact, the factory used to make movements with hacking seconds hands, but they were only reserved for officer's watches, lol.
>>
>>18787433
Yeah I just really like the design since I'm too poor for a gmt master. I also somewhat regret it as this doesn't really have that vostok character. Gonna have my dad bring one from Russian next year. The bezel was black and blue, I pried it off and left it in the sun for like 2 months and the black turned pink.
>>
>>18787429
The vostok movements don't have quickset dates. That's the problem. There's no function to quickly cycle the date wheel, the only way to move the date wheel is to roll the hour hand forward 24 hours. They're really old, really fucking outdated movements.
>>
>>18787425
Yeah you can "quick" set the date on Vostok automatics (in quotation marks coz it's not that quick innit) and it's even mentioned in the official manual, but anecdotally I've heard that the practice can still mess up the movement. Authentic post-Soviet SOVL.

Apparently genuine Eastern Europeans from bonafide ex-Soviet places rate the Soviet Vostoks more highly because even as the sun was setting on the CCCP, they still maintained higher quality control than modern Russia lmao. In any case...Boctok comrades represent
>>
>>18787436
>anecdotally I've heard that the practice can still mess up the movement.
I'm honestly not even surprised. It's crossed my mind as I've done it. I've sometimes set calendar reminders on my phone to tell me when I can put it on again.

well i was asking more in the sense of like, "if i wait to buy, is it gonna 3x-4x in price?"
which is basically what happened to every single computer part you can think of, which was a bullet I managed to dodge
my job is a mix of labor intensive stuff and deskwork things and I wanted to wait until I could safely be out of the labor intensive part and be full deskwork before getting the spring drive so that i don't ding up the crystal or the bracelet while working. i know wear and tear is natural but i wanted to minimize the damage so i can enjoy it long term.
>>
>>18787447

>the practice can mess up the movement
In general it's good practice to simply avoid turning the hands backwards for any reason on mechanical movements. All of the moving parts are designed to turn one way for hours and hours and hours indefinitely, also turning the other way a bunch and and wiggling everything back and forth is going to make wear the other way and you'll get more play between the components.

Some movements are designed to be able to do it safely, but it's still good pracrice to avoid it.
>>
>>18787503
Threaded crowns actually do not help with water resistance on modern watches. Their presence is to make sure the crown is going to stay closed while operating under water, so you can't bump it and accidentally pull it out or turn it cockeyed so it's open on one side or something.

If you wear your automatic watch every day there's nothing to "faff" with. It stays on. Unless there's a problem.
And you quickly get over how much your watch costs if you just suck it up, get over it and wear it and stop worrying about it. You'll get scratches, but if it's a watch you enjoy and plan to keep forever who gives a shit?
>>
>>18787452
GS is trying to move into completely new price brackets, Ă  la JLC. So GS's will keep getting more expensive.

This type of watch from GS used to be in the same price range as an average Tudor until just a few years ago. In a few years, we'll be seeing them in the $10k range, easily, outpacing inflation.
>>
>>18787620
The problem is that GS is, like the rest of Seiko’s brands, just raising prices without doing any attendant increases in quality.

I don't agree with this take. You shouldn't worry about "naked ass wrists". Watches are optional.
Unless you truly need it for time, Casio is only good as a "gateway drug" into watches.
You don't need to be that middle-aged man with a non-existing sense of style and autistically wearing the same Casio every day for years.

>b-but Bill Gates wears Casio

there is absolutely no basis for GS gaining any meaningful secondary market value even on the "hype" pieces like shunbun. its not a fucking daytona it will not "3x or 4x" in any time frame. the shit you see on digital marketplace like chrono24 or redit or ebay is for sale by dealer and they want MARGIN, and have absolutely no problem holding inventory for longer to find a sucker to buy it since watches arent like cars taking up lot space. you could warehouse millions of watches for pennies of margin.

you just need to hunt for private sale / sale by owner. the dealers want you to think they are private sellers, do not fall for it, it should be pretty obvious whos who. the real price is and always has been private sale on the secondary market.

If you just posted every other thread or so when it's relevant to something someone is talking about or even just to be like "hey, trying on a new strap," nobody would care. We have dudes in here literally spamming 5 year old pictures every day.

>a counter function
This is a chronograph with a counter. You can advance the counter by 10 with the 10 o'clock pusher and by 1 with the 4 o'clock pusher. The counter also advances by 1 at midnight, so you can also use it as a big date. Shame the watch is extremely rare as it was only sold during the 1964 Olympic Games inside the Olympic Village.
