I dealt with this by working out later in the day.
is caffeine the only alternative?

Just do it at the end of the day. The relaxation you feel post workout is godly, it makes sense to do it before switching off at the end of the day

Eat before. The downside is you don't get the high of a post-workout meal on low blood sugar.

No, it's just the most popular stimulant. Even adding in stuff like ginseng or rhdiola will get you more effects, and that's just like basic-ass supplements.

I kind of pre-offset my workout.
Before workout at least as many calories as the workout itself will take and 200mg of caffine (in pill form because it's consistent) . Not enough to make me wired but it's just enough resources to not have your workout kill the rest of the day I walk away from an hour workout feeling almost "giddy". If you're walking/biking/running to the gym include the calories for both the to and return trip in the pre-workout meal.
