Just part of the trend. 80s music started to shift towards more masculine sounds, themes and images (no matter what you think about the glam rock stuff from that era, that was considered masculine too)
So musicians had to look the part. Not to mention I'd imagine it had something to do with the types of guys who would get into heavy rock/metal/power rock vs the types of guys who were playing in bands like the Beatles or the Rolling Stones who pretty much just wrote pop tubes about love and women and sex.

If you watch interviews with guys from bands back then a lot of them also either came from shit areas so you had to be big to look scary, or had very shit jobs/lives and the only way to cope with that was to put all your anger in the gym, the guys from Black Sabbath in one interview said there were two ways to live in Birmingham in the 70s, you either go work crap shifts in the factories or the mines, or you make it big as a musician and get the fuck out
