Discuss the sport of weightlifting, its athletes, competitions and general training. I changed the title to /owg/ since someone asked last thread. Still need the old pastebin but I'll throw this up whenever it falls off the catalog. If you have any suggestions for the OP of each thread and what I should stick on the resources section post it in the thread and I'll add it next time.

Competing used to be free but since my europoorean shithole is crumbling and free money is getting cut the fed has us paying 100€ or so for a comp
>>

No.
>>

wtf, thats more than a HCOL area in burgerland. I can compete for 85$. Local meets are cheaper too, most recent one was 40$.

Maybe next year but im a thirdie and i'm positive they dont let randos in without a fat bribe. I took up on it like 4 months ago at 20 anyways, 90kg C&J at 90kg BW (i'll be cutting soon tho)

Yashathoughts appears to be dead as well. I may try to get it back through internet archive.

I've been doing about 4 meets a year for the past 4-5 years and it's always a good time with a team

No, just too late to be elite. You can still lift some big weights.

Bump.
RIP to the heaviest C&J that never was.
>>
>>76623765
>>76623746
What's the cutoff ? 14 ? 20 ?
>>
>>76625273
Probably mid teens. There's really nothing stopping you from winning masters as you get older though. Ignore this advice if you already have a giant high bar back squat and conventional deadlift relative to your weight, you might actually get pretty good still. Also to be completely frank, unless you're roiding you're not winning any world championship or placing in the olympics.
>>
>>76625273
To actually be elite? Usually teens although I know a girl who started WL at 25 and made the world team last year with a few national championship wins along the way. Insane athletic background though, hitting a 200 back squat as a non super in your first year of WL is crazy for anyone let alone a woman

That said it is overwhelmingly likely that no matter when you started you would not have been an elite athlete. That's just how sports work. Genetics are everything and the odds are very good that you don't have them. That's fine though - it's still a really fun sport, especially with a team, but temper your expectations. Snatching 100kg is further than most get.
>>
>>76626471
>>76626448
What if i have a decent backsquat at 20 (went to 200kg @90kg bw before before injury then deloading) but suck at ass at pressing movements
>>
>>76626596
Asking about it means it won't happen, sorry. You'd be doing more than thinking.
>>
>>76626596
That was over a decade ago in your case. You'll get stronger much much faster but don't expect to be breaking records.
>>
>>76626693
I'm not that anon, i'm actually 20.
>>
>>76626805
Oh, 200kg at 20? Yeah you can probably get somewhere if you really want it. Also, weightlifting isn't actually about pressing movements. There's guys with huge jerks that have poverty OHPs. Its overwhelmingly leg drive with upper body strength helping at lockout. Pressing the bar out is actually grounds for not counting a lift.
>>
>>76626596
You can probably do "well" (nationals, although that depends a lot on the country) but pretty unlikely to be elite simply because most elite weightlifters were well in excess of that result at an earlier age while also having experience in the competition lifts.

With a 200 back squat 120/150 is doable but entirely dependent on technical progression. Get a coach and find out.

What do you guys have on the menu for training this week?

I had back squat 7x3 yesterday along with snatch pulls, snatch grip push press, and heavy one arm rows. Tomorrow is both full lifts + clean pulls and Friday is front squat triples and some other stuff

>>

I follow a very retarded routine that I will never talk about in view of its retardation.
>>
>>76629566
Please tell me you aren't trying to program for yourself
>>
>>76629624
Yes and no.
It's a program I've slightly modified when it comes to accessories, but the core of it and the progression is the same.
>>
>>76629630
It can't be that bad right
>>
>>76629651
it could be worse
>>
Why you guys dont work chest
>>
>>76630227
Lots of weightlifters bench but I usually just do db bench for shoulder health vs trying to gain mass / build a big bench
>>
>>76630227
I got into weightlifting after having always trained like a powerlifter. Bench had always been my best lift, and the thing about overhead mobility taking a toll is true. So I just dip sometimes.
>>
What strength programming would you have a novice (and intermediate) do to get as strong as possible in the areas which matter most if they can't perform any of the competition lifts just yet?
>>
>>76631915
Squats while learning power jerk, goblet squat to overhead squat with a PVC pipe. Push press > OHP
>>
>>76631915
I would test their mobility first because most people either struggle mentally with deep squats and the front squat position/overhead squat or simply cant due to tighteness or morphology
At least 2 months of empty bar practice for awkward positions
>>
>>76631974
>>76631984
What's a good weekly structure to follow for months to develop the qualities?
>>
>>76632046
I would be deceiving you if i gave you any advice over a text image board or internet medium. I'm naturally flexible and did kickboxing before so i never struggled with those positions. I helped a friend with mobility though but it was basic bitch overloading stretching. Just copy whatever drills national teams (eg bulgaria china iran etc) do, especially younger teams, you wont need more than that probably
>>
>>76632067
I'll try pausing for a few minutes in my warmups and see what I get from that, what about for the actual strength work? Just something like a 5x5 a few times per week?
>>
>>76631915
TM for squats, presses, rows, chinups, pulls from the ground, back extensions
>>
>>76632114
Read up on periodization work. Sika Strength is $25/month and they offer some good programs. Their channel is a really extesnive resource if you want to program for yourself, but that's really not advisable when you're starting out. If you're starting out, get a coach for a few sessions to focus on perfecting form. I assure you, it's a common mistake to try to teach yourself the movements before you get a coach. I tried to for 6 months and progressed, and my coach had to correct a lot of bad form.

>>
>>76636404

>>
>>76636543
nta but same as martial art gyms, coaches dont want to bother with someone they didn't coach since childhood or with a guy they "dont see any potential" for so they neglect everyone but their protégés and give them meme exercises, but in that lump of of "everyone" there's always 1-2 people who are actually their to learn and want it even more than the protégé but never get a chance

>>76629155
I have some low hang snatches, pause clean and pause jerk and front squats tomorrow. Then I get to do power jerks and push press on saturday with some accessories.
>>
>>76631915
I think it depends on your goals. General strength is a goal of course. It's like asking whats the best way to build a car. As long as it has everything important it doesnt matter. I always recommend something similar to starting strength to beginners and I have sets of programs for people who have finished my beginner program and intermediates etc.

Find an in person coach solely for learning technique. Being critiqued via poorly shot videos sent over text makes things significantly slower and more difficult.

Another reason is to train around better lifters than you. You can learn a lot just from the environment

>been power snatching everything because cant get low enough
>decide to try a very externally rotated narrow style like klokov
>works better, but not quite there
>try full on frog snatch with my heels touching last night
>smash it, finally get a picture perfect snatch in an ATG squat
>coach tells me it looked excellent
Think I'm just gonna keep doing it, the width I spread my feet on the catch is literally perfect. Can't go as heavy as my power snatch yet but it's a massive improvement.
>>
>not one lift posted

>>
>>76644393
Now that you have an 80kg snatch you know youve got the same technique you'll have forever
>>
>>76645104
At 70kg not 80kg for power snatch. Getting into full snatch for that is a WIP
>>
You will never be a weightlifter. You have no technique, you have no strength, you have no speed. You are a DYEL twisted by ATG videos and dollar store chalk inhalation into a crude mockery of Lü’s squat jerk perfection.

All the “validation” you get from the jury at your local meet is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back gym goers mock you. Your online coach is disgusted and ashamed of you, the judges laugh at your small legs and wonky snatches after you've left the platform.

Weightlifters are utterly repulsed by you. Decades of technique drilling and heavy squats have allowed weigtlifters to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even crossfitters who “pass” look uncanny and unnatural to a weightlifter. Your horrible clean contact is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get into a state meet after years of training, the judges will promptly red light all your disgusting attempts at a jerk when they see your slow dip, forward lean and repulsive pressout.

You will never be happy. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel your meniscus grinding down like pepper, ready to explode your knees under the unbearable (80kg) weight of your snatch PR.

Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll sell your Antas, bin your sleeves, put your Eleiko belt around your neck, and plunge into the cold abyss. Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to buy you a ticket for Weightlifting House's streams and prohibitively expensive online coaching sessions. They’ll bury without the participation medals you won at your local meets, and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know a DYEL is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a skeleton that is unmistakably low density.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.
