Sorta. I wouldn't say it's ever the ONE-THING with fat people but it's definitely a contributor. Something about liver dysfunction and certain diabetes makes people thick in the middle and less so in the extremities. So there's at least a couple things there working towards that shape.

There may have been the occasionally large warrior, but tales like the giant berserker holding Stamford bridge was probably a regular dude that increases in size and ferocity with multiple retellings because it wows non critical plebeians like yourself.

Reality is that alcohol messes with fat signaling and promotes visceral fat accumulation, meaning more fat gets stored in your viscera/gut than just normally overeating some amount of calories

it's fake. have posted on this in great detail before, but here's the skinny:

alcohol is negative to net zero calories, as it takes more energy to process than can be absorbed from it, even when taking into account CNS depression.

the EXCEPTIONS to this rule are extremely bready beers and sweet wines like muscat. but even then, you need to drink so much that it's not really significant anyway.

beer bellies aren't due to beer, they're due to the lifestyle that surrounds most of the people who bitch about it, i.e. lazy fucks who are also stuffing their face with food and doing zero cardio. and inb4 "muh mTOR signalling will fuck up my gains!!!", those studies were on people who had the equivalent of 8-10(!) standard drinks directly after a workout. yea that will fuck up your muscle synthesis, and a bunch of other bodily systems.

even if you have a few drinks a day, which you probably shouldn't be doing for other reasons, it will have essentially zero effect on your caloric intake and muscular synthesis. once again, the problem is that people have no fucking control and are morons, so they blame the alcohol.
