If you care about the topic of academia and academic integrity, it's worth a watch
but TL;DR:
1) Mike's dissertation arguably doesn't meet the criteria for a PHD thesis, insofar as it doesn't generate new knowledge, but only confirms previously known, well-established facts
2) The data provided in the thesis is nonsensical, because Mike cocked up the data entry (most notably, in several tables the standard deviation column is a copy-paste of the mean column)
3) The thesis is chock-full of grammatical and stylistic errors that suggest his instructors didn't even give it a cursory proof-read before approving the paper for peer review

There's no academic integrity. During my masters I worked on a huge statistical project that had a fundamental flaw in it that made it obsolete. That paper got accepted into nature. The fundamental flaw was assumption of normality while there was none. Groups needed to be split further, but then if you did that the entire model of 3k lines code would fall apart. I pointed that out, got a pretty meh grade for the project due to it. Ah well science is all about pretending things work.

This was actually a topic introduced to me when I was taking analytical chemistry. Our professor was super obsessed about big data even though he taught chem, he brought in a guest speaker to talk about how there are many papers that are published in peer reviewed journals that have data that make no sense and cannot be recreated.
I forget if he was working to correct these or if he was just talking about this in relation to big data

Generating new knowledge doesn't mean some new revolutionary discovery. It just means you carried some ongoing research a bit further with your own new future outlook based on your work.
Even if you find nothing, answering the question of whether or not some variable was a factor or not is still new knowledge for future researchers. Just re-reading other people's work isn't really doing any work, at that point you are just a very scientific reporter.

What the other anon said. You don't necessarily have to invent something completely new. idk about what humanities do, but in STEM, PHD theses are often about a new approach towards a known goal, novel application of existing technology or just pushing an existing field of work a little bit forward
For example (and it's not a great/realistic example but it illustrates it pretty well), person A's thesis is about a theoretical new encryption algorithm. Person B's thesis implements the algorithm and improves its efficiency with no loss to effectiveness. Person C discusses and drafts possible vulnerabilities and methods to break this algorithm. Person D comes up with a modification of the algorithm that patches these vulnerabilities
It's basically small, iterative steps that build on what was done previously
