to be or knot to be
why did that happen? I thought rock climbing was extremely safe
>>76692111When you lose respect for what you are doing in these types of activities you can lose your life. This is someone who had lost respect for the mountain because they felt their skill was above that level of caution.
>>76692129good life lesson, that carries over to everythingshame he died before really internalizing this, but no one's perfect
>>76692129that also happens with drunk driving. most people really focus when they're drunk driving for the first time, making them even think that they're better drivers when drunk. it's seasoned drunk drivers who stop caring and think driving drunk is the most normal thing in the world that end up killing someone or themselves
>>76692107it is when you're not doing some crazy route with a bunch of loose rock and lethally high cliffs, but this kind of climbing is basically like the cave diving of mountaineering.>>76692111literally forgot to knot the end of the rope
climbing is a thing where forgetting one thing can kill you or your partner. there arent that many things to remember at a gym but on a big wall the odds of one such mistake start rising
>>76692136>good life lessondeath lesson for that guy
>>76692111He ran out of rope and didn’t tie a knot>rock climbing is extremely safeFucking lol.
>>76692695is there any reason not to tie a knot besides just forgetting. Seems like it should be default first thing you do when rappelling.
>>76692707There is no reason to other than hubris. I wouldn't even include forgetting because it is something you do every single time.
>>76692714something to feel like a bit of a daredevil, I guess, knowing if you go too much further you die. Sad and kinda embarrassing way to go
>>76692107Did he just rap off the end of his rope? holy shit
>>76692765Yes and then fell down about 2,000 feet of straight cliff wall. Somehow he survived
>>76692767Damn. Where was this? What's the name of the climber?
>>76692707It takes time. Tie a million knots with no mistakes and you start getting cocky. The purpose of the knot is to catch you when you get cocky
>>76692768Fake news, this guy died his name is Balin Miller
>>76692774yeah I work in a lab with caustic chemicals and always wear PPE even when it’s just a 5 minute thing cause you never know if you will accidentally mess up
>>76692767>>76692768Balin Miller, he didn't survive.>>76692774a stopper knot takes no time at all. you wouldn't tie a stopper because it can get caught in cracks
>>76692695>>76692707>>76692714The dumb fuck also wasn't using a safety line.
>>76692107Is wall climbing acceptable?I always hear females are active at gyms with them and it's an easy way to meet them.
>>76692107OH N-
>>76692107Balin Miller tried to grab the other guy mid-fall. If he'd gotten a good grip, would he have arrested his own fall or would he have only died with company?
>>76692882thats a bag anon
>>76692922there is another climber at the bottom of the video, and the falling climber tries to grab him at 0:13 of the video
>>76692922ok, I checked the pixels and that's indeed a bag.
>>76692147have you ever been in love before, anon?
>>76692107this the 23 yo guy who died? saw youtube thumbnail of the face yesterday but didnt watch
>>76692928It's his gear bag. He was going down to get it after a successful climb because it got stuck and he couldn't pull it up from the top. And he died in the most noob way possible, except for that guy who swung himself into the void that time.
>>76693198>except for that guy who swung himself into the void that time.Got a webm or links?
>>76692813>Is wall climbing acceptable?Yes, just make sure your belayer is good at verbal and visual checking. It is better to overcheck everything if it means a safe climb. Also, go with someone who doesn't get distracted by climbing thots or other distractions while you're stuck mid-air with a wedgie.
>>76693204There was no video. It was Dan Osman.
I moved to Switzerland and I have met so many people who are into this retarded hobby. Skitouring is another fucking dumb thing where you are rolling the odds every time against a horrible death in an avalanche and every winter there is at least one group of young people which gets buried or pushed off a cliff to their deaths. You get the same experience of being in the scenic mountain nature by hiking or skiing so there is literally no reason to risk it all. Go bouldering if you want to climb.
Climbing just seems extremely gay and womencoded to me.Especially on those fake walls.
>this is action@0:22kek
>>76692111>>76692129Familiarity breeds contempt
>>76694226>t. brownskin
>>76692107yeah
>>76692111Checked. He wasn’t climbing, he was abseiling. It’s the thing normies do andget sponsored and have no issue, but it’s like poison to climbers because they all realise they can be so blase about it and ignore the risks and run off the end of the rope and die. Thats what happened here. Climbers make shit abseilers and say abseiling is very dangerous and should only be done as a last resort, yet cavers and office normies who do it sponsored as a laugh have no problem.
>>76692107LOL AT WHITE PEOPLE.
>>76692707The actual reasonWhen you're climbing on a single rope (called "lead rope solo") you don't know the end of the rope, because when you reach the top of the route, you will draw the rope up behind you to proceed, and if it's knotted it might catch on the cliff face and you can't pull it up anymore. You aren't expecting to descend on the rope while you climb up, so this is fineIirc he had successfully climbed up the route like this, attached to another line tied to his kit bag. Then while drawing up his kit bag, it got stuck. At this point he should have tied a knot in his lead rope line before rappelling down, but he forgot / chose not to, and went down on it. He misjudged the length of rope left (somehow), it was too short and he abseiled off the end of itProbably a classic example of a "it'll be fine" moment due to complacency
>>76692129>>76692107He had just finished the pitch. He was on the wall for three days at this point He was going to finish El cap that day.A single mistake.
>>76695584Pretty much.
>>76692941just once. I'm gonna get married soon and I'm glad I was never in love in this relationship. when I was in love I would've been able to kill, to do anything, I was like a feral animal trying to make sense of something for the first time in it's life. a normal transactional relationship makes everything so much easier. it feels like family, being in love feels like there's a parasite eating your brain
>>76692107how possible would it be for him to grab that other rope as he was falling?
>>76695704If he knew he was about to run out of rope and what was about to happen very possible but he probably had no clue what was happening, almost looks like he makes a grab for it though
>>76693295Remember when there was NO VIDEO of someone dying doing (not broadcasted) sports?I wanna go back in time.
>>76696076yeah i prefer to see it in person, like with gladiators
>>76692107catastrophic failure on deadlift means you're crippled for life, would you rather have that or die?don't deadlift, ever>inb4 dyel?no
>>76696162>dont leave your house because you could get in a car crash
>>76696166i dont run in front of cars in order to train my car dodging skills
>>76696176And that's why you'll never dodge a car.
>>76696188thats might secretim always dodging cars
>>76692147but high blood alcohol massively skews perceptions and reactions no matter what. there's no level of intentional focus that can totally compensate for a poorly functioning central nervous system. it's very easy to not notice too much speed or an upcoming intersection or curve. field sobriety tests suck but they at least show how much drunk people fail when attempting to stay focused.
Climbing is god's way of weeding people out of the gene pool who are exceptionally motivated, intelligent, disciplined, and lacking the proper mechanism for risk assessment and self-preservation.
>>76696296>intelligentLol
>>76694311BRUCE U
>>76695704Probably impossible. He fell about 15 feet by the time he was near the rope attached to his gear bag. With that much momentum, it's basically impossible to grip onto something, your momentum would overpower your grip strength no matter how strong you are.
Fuckin surreal. I know nothing about it but if I was fucking off on the side of a cliff I would definitely check my rope length and have it tied to me or do whatever avoids this happening
>>76698820yeah but what if you were on camera and were basically done with the climb and were focused more on looking really cool and casual as you descend?
>>76692111Shouldn't have gotten vaxxed
