are you ever worried that the bar will drop when you're doing OHP and it'll kill you?
No need which why you need to brace and engage your ass, abs and enterior delt
>>76695156>hand slips>braces muscles>bar cracks your skullit didn't work anon
>>76695162You have severe grip skill issued
>>76695170what if it's accidental and not related to strength
>>76695145165lbs ain't gonna kill me
>>76695145If I can pick it up over my head im not scared of it.
>>76695190The heavens are smiting you because you're weak and not supposed to live that long
someone post the video of the guy dropping the bar and it falling behind him and hitting his spotter on the head
>>76695145take a security professional perspective, and think not in terms of vulnerabilities, but in terms of attackers with defined abilities. So for example, if a demon was in the room with you and that demon had the ability to instantly turn all of your muscles into jell-o, then yes the OHP could kill you. But, this same demon could kill you when you step into the bath, or when you lean to look over a cliff, or when you're in the middle of a crosswalk (by zapping you and then the driver that now cannot brake to avoid your collapsed body). So a demon with this ability is super dangerous. Are any of these situations super dangerous? Not without a comparably OP demon.Realistically, your muscles don't all simultaneously turn to jell-o, but some start to fail well before others, and failure also isn't instantaneous. Realistically, in the worse case your push the barbell in front of you and and stumble backwards and hit your head on a machine and bleed out.
>>76695145OHP is so fucking light compared to push press and jerk that it will NEVER be a problem.
Do half reps
>>76695145i'm gripping the bar, why would it fall?
>>76695145No because I won't just let go of the bar
>>76695145just walk away lol
>>76695145I blacked out once doing ohp, I was doing reps and kind of got confused and my mind started to drift when pressing the weight up briefly out of nowhere and then I was startled by a clang. It was the sound of the bar crashing down on the pins from the full height of the press. Lucky that it missed my head and went forward. Apparently narrow grip width can cause you to jam your delts into your neck, and combined with the valsalva maneuver it can cause you to pass out.
The other day I lost balance and staggered. Nothing happened other than me not being able to end that set but I got scared as fuck. Most of the time, I'm not worried, but I'm sure that if I knew I was completely safe I'd be able to push myself harder.
>>76695621valsava maneuver reduces veinous returnthe pushing position compresses your subclavian and jugularyou're standing up so gravity's already an issueyou may be tilting your head back which reduces blood to your brainyou release the valsava at lockout which suddenly drops your blood pressurealtogether, you lose blood profusion to your brain and then consciousness.don't do it so intensely, breath "behind the shield", don't tilt your head backI used to occasionally collapse as a kid from this and never had any idea what it was about.
>>76695145No. And I press exclusively with suicide grip.
>>76695145No. Are you doing push press instead? You should learn how to control the weight first.
>>76695145am i strong if i can OHP for 9 reps 60kg at 65kg bw
>>76695235how would you feel if your grip suddenly failed?
>>76696109I would feel my forearms, which have yet failed, pushing the bar away from me
>>76696109that simply wouldn't happen on an OHP
>>76696122A tendon in your forearm could snap due to chronic overuse even though your muscles are more than capable of lifting the weight. You probably wouldn't even feel it hurt beforehand.Unlikely if you're not a roider though.
>>76695145I hate even posting this question here. I have never in my life done barbell ohp.Only and maybe once a week afew sets of behind the neck barbell ohp. But I have few muscles as easily large and intimidating as my shoulders. Thats my only shoulder workout I’ve ever done.Should I switch to front ohp, or just add it to what I’m already doing after behind the neck? It’s one of my favorite lifts, but I barely do it because my shoulders are so big
>>76695195sure could bonk ya on the noggin tho, innit bruv?
>>76696364chances are that if your shoulders look comparatively much bigger than the rest of your body you actually have a wide skeletal frame/clavicles and that is the reason they appear wideunless you have top tier range of motion and extremely healthy tendons behind the neck presses will eventually fuck you up
>>76695162>>76696109>>76696125Even if, by some absurdly improbable chance, that did happen, simple step forward or backward so that you're out of the way of the bar.How can you be so retarded to not understand that?
>>76695145not any more than I'm afraid of suddenly slipping or losing my balance while walking or cycling and cracking my skull on the pavement
>>76695162this has literally never happened in the history of lifting, you might be some sort of deformed subhuman if this is a real concern for you
>>76696109But I did have breakfast this morning
>>76695145That's why I only do machines and light weight dumbbells, I go to gym to get healthy, not to die.
>>76695145thats like saying do you ever worry your car is going to randomly explode or your dad is going to come home and butt rape you for no reason, no I don't worry about it
Tryna grip MY "bar"? If you know what I'm saying heh
>>76696109If you don’t do suicide grip on OHP it will roll of your thumb and fall forward
>>76695162Are you afraid of eating a banana because you might slip on the peel later
Why is OHP such a bitch lift to progress? Last OHP session I did 50kg 3x5 with just a bit of struggle, today I failed the fifth rep on the last set at 52.5kg.
>>76695145I sometimes fear doing bench press since I have no safety pins, but ohp I just cant see being dangerous
>>76697105Keep trying, work incline press on bench days.
>>76695145If you don't know how to bail you probably shouldn't be lifting heavy. You also work up to it so you can be fairly confident you won't fail. Also there's risk in everything you do, and yeah some people get injured doing an ohp, but like 99.9% of people do not.
Only time I ever suffered the BOONK was doing my 10 ramp up reps with the empty bar, which just goes to show you - always maintain control of the bar from the unrack to rerack, no matter the weight.
>>76697105>insisting on 3X5 for no reason whatsoeverWhy? If you can rep out a 5 on your third set you could get 7 or 8 on your first. Y'see, the thing with lifting weights is it's difficult. It fatigues your muscles. So if you are lifting properly then your reps should be degrading down due to fagitue. This is good, it means you are lifting heavy and hard enough. If you are able to repeat the same reps over and over the you are only giving the same amount of effort over and over. That causes stagnation and regression. If you want a higher rep workout, 8 6 4. If you want strength, 5 4 3. And stop trying to go up 5 pounds or two pounds every time like an steroid junkie asshole. 1 pound increments only.
>>76696958>Are you afraid of eating a banana because you might slip on the peel laterno, I'm afraid of eating them because they contain polyphenol oxidase (PPO)>>76696638>never happened>picrel>>76696485>simply movecorrection: simply react and then move in time to dodge something right above your head
>>76695145The opposite, I'm worried that I'll scrape my nose on the way up, it's happened before
>>76697105>>76697480Lifts increased a lot after I having a dedicated OHP day
>>76695162>hand slipswhat??? how would this EVER happen?
>>76698151suicide grip
>>76698161I use a "suicide grip" (that only applies to bench press) and its still impossible. the bar is braced in your palm with your forearms directly below the path of movement, force being applied verticallyI have two days a week dedicated exclusively to the press and I spend nearly an hour on it and accessories like press starts and push press. It would literally never happen.
>>76697838Yeah I've hit my chin before on the way up
>>76698172Suicide grip + bad grip form I suppose
I only fail an OHP at chin level so no
>>76695145>are you ever worried that the bar will drop when you're doing OHP and it'll kill you?No because I'm under the bar and will catch it if it falls.
Dying during a lift should be a constant fear, if you don't feel any that's a problem born out of ignorance, you are handling your body weight on your shoulders that's not safe. Its kinda like handling firearms with no regard for safety, eventually something happens.
>>76698249you can't press anywhere near your bodyweight lmao
>>76698135What do you mean by dedicated OHP day? OHP and accesories alone?
>>76696485In the case of a tendon suddenly snapping, your reflexes will take over without you making any conscious action. You probably would either hit yourself on the head with the bar or throw yourself backwards away from it before you even have time to understand what's going on
>>76695145>are you ever worried that the bar will drop when you're doing OHP and it'll kill you?nah i just don't lift it overhead and i use like 10th of ohp weight, maybe 8th with 2 light dumbbels and lat spread enaged and i just hold 2 light dumbbels at my head height in sorta behind the neck press position even if somehow i would pass out there is literally nothing that could ever happen to me this way >is that because u're affraid of big weight ? no, it's because finishing the motion is detrimental to my muscle building efforts, i just stand there with lat spread and ponder where to microadjust the weight to try it, it's great, it works delts and it's great and it works serratus and it's GREAT :d i also have camera at my back and monitor in front of me and can see real time what is scapula doing - it's also great :D
>>76695145I don't hold it over my head for more than a second like a retarded powershitter
>>76696125I'm a TRTranny and I've been training full body 3x a week, lately my elbow has been hurting from chest presses and tricep extensions, am I about to ACK my shit if I don't take a break?
>>76695216Yeah I've reracked 140kg+ from overhead several times it's fine. Just have some body awareness and catch it on your front rack
>>76700330Are you giving yourself golf elbow or tennis elbow? If you don't want to reduce volume, you can do some heavy isometrics to try and force the tendons to grow.
>>76695968yes. 1/2/3/4 plates are the strength standard. not the strongest dude around but pretty strong.OHP/bench/squat/deadlift
