Hello /fit/ I recently started on my fitness journey and feel like I've made some progress so far but I keep getting mixed messages about how many calories I need to build muscle. Currently I workout 3x a week doing mostly compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench press, and overhead presses. I'm 33, 180lbs, 5' 9", and i eat about 2,500cal a day and 180g of protein. Is this the right track? Some say I need to eat 2,800 a day but others say 2500 is fine as long as I hit my protein and have body fat to burn. Which I do since I calculated im at about 29 percent body fat.

I went to TDEE calculator and you need 2500 with a gram of protein/lb of bodyweight. Stop thinking with your dumbass noob brain and just fucking do it.

I don't even track anything and just eat when I'm hungry until I'm full stupid shit like crepes and rice and coconut milk curries and make good gains
just lift hard and sleep lots and eat til you're full and avoid processed shit

Seems like you're doing fine. However if you're really 29% bf then you should cut. You're obese. At least drop down to a healthier 15%.
If you just started you will still build some muscle while in a modest deficit.
